Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020 timings

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S20 series of handsets at the event. The lineup is rumoured to feature the Samsung Galaxy S20, along with the Galaxy S20+ and the top-end Galaxy S20 Ultra. 5G variants of the handsets could be announced but 4G models will most likely be made available for other regions.

Some features are expected to be similar across all Galaxy S20 phones. The three handsets are rumoured to feature a punch-hole front camera design, a multiple rear-camera setup and the S20 Ultra may sport a 108MP primary sensor. There might be a curved Dynamic AMOLED display with a high refresh rate of 120Hz as well. The Galaxy S20 Ultra is rumoured to sport a 108MP main camera sensor, a 48MP periscope telephoto camera that could support up to 100x hybrid zoom, a 64MP sensor and an ultra-wide camera. The Galaxy S20+ might get a quad-camera setup, which is expected to feature 12MP + 64MP telephoto + 12 MP ultra-wide-angle cameras, along with a ToF sensor.

Samsung is expected to dole out more details about the Galaxy Z Flip during the Galaxy Unpacked 2020. The Buds+ are expected to feature a dedicated gaming mode and come with Spotify integration as well. The device was previously listed on the App Store, which hinted at an 85mAh battery capacity on the new cans, resulting in a claim of 7.5 hours of talk time or 11 hours of music playback on a single charge.

Redmi 8A Dual, Redmi Powerbank launched in India: Price, specs and more

Following the usual pre-launch tease on its social media pages, Redmi has launched its first smartphone of the year in India along with its very first portable power bank. The Redmi 8A Dual is an entry-level smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 chip and a massive 5000mAh battery. The 2GB RAM + 32GB storage variant of the handset is priced at Rs 6,499, while the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage variant is priced at Rs 6,999. The 10000mAh version of the Redmi Powerbank costs Rs 799, while the 20000mAh version costs Rs 1,499. The Redmi 8A Dual will go on sale on February 18 at 12PM via Mi.com and Amazon.in in the following colour options: Sky White, Sea Blue, and Midnight Grey. The Redmi Powerbank will also go on sale at the same time as the Redmi 8A Dual in white and black colour options but only on Mi.com.

The Redmi 8A Dual is named so presumably because it’s a dual SIM model with VoLTE and VoWiFi support for both slots. The front side of the handset features a 6.22-inch Dot Notch IPS LCD screen with HD+ resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and a P2i splash-proof nano-coating, while the back side features Redmi’s new Aura XGrip design with a faint mesh-like texture. The company claims this is an improved version of its older WaveGrip design. The back side is also home to the primary 13MP camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The inbuilt camera software has a dedicated mode for portrait photos. It also has native support for Google Lens. The selfie camera is an 8MP unit.

According to the Chinese electronics manufacturer, the Redmi 8A Dual has undergone 23 hours of durability testing against drops and saltwater corrosion. Though the handset’s maximum internal storage space remains fixed at 32GB, it can be expanded to up to 512GB using an optional microSD card. Redmi claims the handset’s 5000mAh battery is good for up to two days of use. Equipped with a USB Type-C port, the Redmi 8A Dual supports not just 18W fast charging but also reverse charging. It means the handset can be used to charge other devices; it’s a feature that’s not common across entry-level devices.

The Redmi Powerbank features an anti-slip design on the sides and dual input ports at the top, which means it can be charged using either microUSB or USB Type-C. Its dual USB-A ports can charge two devices at the same time. Pressing the power button twice successively enables it to charge low-power devices safely. According to Redmi, the power bank can both charge and discharge at the same time without affecting its power delivery to connected devices. The 10000mAh version of the Redmi Powerbank supports 10W fast charging, while the 20000mAh version supports 18W fast charging. If you’re interested in Redmi’s 2020 offerings, you can visit Mi.com on February 18 a little before noon.

OnePlus 88 Pro could be launched in late March in new colour option

Information related to the OnePlus 8 series has leaked online quite a few times now. The latest one claims that the handsets could be launched earlier than expected. OnePlus usually schedules the first launch of the year in May. At least that’s what it is doing for the past couple of years. It is followed up by the T-series launch in the second half of the year. However, it is tipped that OnePlus could be looking forward to launching the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 in late March or April.

The latest development comes from tipster Ishan Agarwal who took to Twitter to reveal the information. Moreover, both the phones could come in a green colour variant. The early launch could help lengthen the gaps between launches of OnePlus T-series phones. To recall, OnePlus 7T was announced just four months after the OnePlus 7. Hopefully, OnePlus will take more time to introduce the T-series this year.

Got some #OnePlus news to share with you all! The OnePlus 8 & 8 Pro (Who knows, maybe the 8 lite too) will be launching sooner this time! Expect a launch in Late March or April. Also, there will be a new Green colour for both the phones. Are you excited for these phones? pic.twitter.com/ceUjcWOzm4

Hence, the upcoming phones, especially the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 are likely to feature a 120Hz refresh rate. The OnePlus 8 Pro is tipped to produce quad HD+ resolution along with 120Hz refresh rate.

The upcoming flagship smartphone is said to feature wireless charging capabilities as well.

Fungi thriving on radioactivity in Chernobyl could help astronauts, sent to ISS

The nuclear reactor explosion that happened at Chernobyl, Ukraine, in 1986 resulted in 31 deaths and affected thousands of lives. What’s worse is that the nuclear plant is still pumping out dangerous levels of radiation into the environment because of which there’s a 19-mile exclusion zone in place. The entire affected area will be unusable for hundreds of years because of hazardous levels of radiation. However, a fungus called Cryptococcus neoformans was discovered in the area five years after the nuclear explosion, in 1991. The fungi not only survived amidst intense radiation but thrived and is still growing. NASA scientists are reportedly researching the fungi to understand how it works and hope they can use it for our benefit.

The fungi is said to store large quantities of melanin, a skin pigment. These melanin levels apparently absorb the harmful nuclear radiation and convert it chemical energy. The process is deemed similar to photosynthesis, which plants employ to convert CO2 and chlorophyll into oxygen and glucose. The fungi in question uses a process known as radiosynthesis, which NASA scientists hope to understand better. Alongside applications like helping patients undergoing chemotherapy and protecting nuclear power plant workers, the fungi could be used to develop a sunscreen that protects against harmful solar radiation. If it can store energy, the fungi could be used to develop an alternative to solar panels.

The NASA research team states in a blog post, “The fungi that grow in there (Chernobyl reactor) are radiotrophic fungi, that are rich in melanin. Melanin absorbs radiation and converts it into other forms of energy (including electric).” Lead scientist of the research, Kasthuri Venkateswaran notes, “My research is into the use of melanin in conjunction with water to convert electromagnetic radiation into electrical energy. This technology will probably find its place in biotechnology as it is non-toxic and biocompatible.”

Radiation exposure in space is a big concern for astronauts since there’s no magnetic field like we have here, on earth. NASA scientists have sent melanin samples from the Cryptococcus neoformans fungi to the International Space Station in order to study how it reacts to space radiation.
