Large Potentially Hazardous asteroid to zoom by Earth this weekend
By NASA’s definition, a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) will soon be passing us Earth. The asteroid is reportedly bigger than the tallest man-made structure on Earth, the Burj Khalifa, and will intersect with earth’s path on February 15. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) identifies the incoming asteroid as 163373 (2002 PZ39) and it follows an Earth-crossing orbit. This means that every time it passes by, there’s a chance that it could collide with Earth. However, as per CNEOS, the asteroid will zoom past Earth’s path on February 15 at 6:05 AM EST (4:35 PM IST on February 16). During this time, the asteroid will pass over Earth from a distance of 0.03860 astronomical units or around 3.6 million miles (approx 5.8 million kilometers) away.
The 163373 (2002 PZ39) is 3,250 feet in diameter and is reported to be the biggest asteroid to pass nearby earth this month. Since it is an Apollo asteroid, it will circle Earth’s path around the Sun and keep returning. However, this also increases the chances of it colliding with Earth, and is classified as a PHA since it is flying too close to the Earth, and that too at about 54.7 kilometers per hour. If the asteroid hits Earth, it will have a devastating effect since the initial blast would kill off millions instantly. Given the asteroid’s size and speed that it’s floating around at, the energy generated from the explosion would be enough to trigger a global nuclear winter that could last for years and would result in the extinction of several species.
Speaking of asteroids and space, we recently came across a report where NASA scientists are reportedly researching a fungus that can help astronauts in space. A fungus thriving on radioactivity was found in Chernobyl, Ukraine. The fungus apparently stores large quantities of melanin, a skin pigment, which can absorb the harmful nuclear radiation and convert it to chemical energy. NASA scientists have sent melanin samples from the fungi Cryptococcus neoformans to the International Space Station in order to study how it reacts to space radiation.

Nvidia MX330, MX350 mobile GPUs officially listed, expected to take on integrated Intel and AMD GPUs
Nvidia has listed a couple of mobile GPUs under its new MX300 series, on its website. This lineup currently consists of the MX330 and the MX350, and we can expect a few more to be announced under this new series. True to previous rumours, the two new chips are based on ṭhe now ageing Pascal architecṭure. The MX330 and the MX350 are said to be 2x and 2.5x faster as compared to (Ice Lake) Iris Plus Graphics on the Intel i7-1065G7 processor. Some specs of both the GPUs are also listed on the official website, which reveal that they support GDDR5 memory interface and support a number of APIs, OSes and interfaces.
Some additional information about the two new GPUs have been reported by NotebookCheck, who apparently got hold of benchmark numbers. As per the report, the MX330 and MX350 are said to be akin to the "MX150 v3," and a "nerfed GTX 1050 on par with a GTX 960M," respectively. The MX330 is essentially a rebranded MX250 as it apparently has 0.8 percent higher clock speed for the 25W version, the report claims. As for the MX350, it could be based upon the same GP107 Pascal chip as the GTX 1050. However, the GPU apparently features only a 64-bit memory bus and could operate on a lower 25W TGP. Results of the MX350 are said to be more in line with a GTX 960M rather than a GTX 1050.
The image embedded above is said to be a preliminary benchmark of MX350 with other NVIDIA GPUs. It is a screenshot of the 1920x1080 Fire Strike Graphics benchmarks with MX350 set as the baseline. One will notice that the MX350’s performance is quite close to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M and that the GeForce GTX 1050 mobile GPU is about 38 percent faster than the MX350. In another test, the MX330 was shown to underperform by about 11 percent slower as compared to the MX350. These new chips are expected to be the last Pascal-based refresh of Nvidia's GeForce MX series for ultra-mobile laptops.

Oppo Find X2, Xiaomi Mi 10 launches postponed, Realme X50 Pro launch made online-only
Owing to growing concerns over the spread of a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) from China, the GSM Association (GSMA) cancelled this year’s edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona. As a result, many smartphone launches have been either postponed or made online-only. In the most recent development of this kind, Oppo and Xiaomi have postponed the launch of the Oppo Find X2 and Mi 10, respectively, while Realme has made the launch of the X50 Pro 5G online-only. It has scheduled the launch for February 24.
Xiaomi, which officially launched Mi 10 in China yesterday at an online-only event, originally planned to host a global launch for its latest flagship smartphone on February 23 in Barcelona. In a statement released on Twitter yesterday, the Chinese electronics manufacturer says it will “arrange a separate launch event in Europe at a later date”. Oppo, too, had plans to launch the Find X2 on February 22 in Barcelona. In its statement sent directly to us over email today, the company says, “the event will be rescheduled for March and more information will be shared soon.”
Realme, on the other hand, hasn’t postponed its global smartphone launch. It has, however, announced on Twitter that its launch event will now be online-only. The Chinese phone maker will launch the Realme X50 Pro 5G on February 24 virtually in Madrid. These three smartphone makers are among the many that will now be forced to launch their new offerings in other ways than originally planned. Other major brands expected to showcase new smartphone technology include HMD Global, Sony, LG, and Vivo.
Amidst all the confusion caused by this year’s MWC cancellation, the Oppo Find X2 has popped up on Geekbench. Listed as ‘OPPO CPH2025’, the Oppo Find X2 is seen sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip with 12GB of RAM. Its single-core score is 913, while its multi-core score is 3308. When it’s finally launched next month, the Oppo Find X2 is expected to feature a 120Hz screen and 65W fast charging, which is the highest rated charging technology we’ve seen so far.
