OnePlus 8 series complete specs leak and heres our rumour roundup

OnePlus is expected to be prepping its upcoming OnePlus 8 series of handsets. While we hope that the smartphone maker doesn’t muddle up its lineup as it did with the OnePlus 7, 7 Pro, 7T and the 7T Pro, we won’t really know what will happen till this year ends. The OnePlus 8 series of handsets are expected to be announced in the first half of 2020 and a previous report suggested that it could be announced by late March. More details about the upcoming phones have surfaced online, including their complete specifications and here’s our rumour roundup.

OnePlus 8 series might consist of three phones

OnePlus started off with a consistent launch schedule and announced only one notable phone every year. It actually gave flagship phones a run for their money but lately, it has been inconsistent. I believe that the OnePlus 7 series should never have existed as the OnePlus 7T phones are well worth what they offer and the former lineup can simply perplex buyers. With the OnePlus 8 lineup, things could get even messier since there three phones are rumoured under the lineup. As per current reports, OnePlus 8 Lite, OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro could be launched soon.

OnePlus 8 lineup complete spec sheet leaked

The OnePlus 8 series of phones were reportedly listed online on the Giztop web store, briefly. The Spanish news outlet ProAndroid managed to jot down all the listed specifications. However, we can’t be entirely sure that these specs will be found on the upcoming OnePlus phones since it could’ve very well been a dummy listing, especially since the launch event has not yet been announced. Here are the complete leaked specs of the OnePlus 8 series of handsets.

OnePlus 8 Pro leaked specifications

Starting with the top of the line OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone, it will reportedly feature a 6.5-inch AMOLED QHD+ display with 120Hz refresh rate. Given that most high-end smartphones being launched nowadays feature a display with a high refresh rate, this leak might very well hold up. As expected, the smartphone could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC and come with either 8GB or 1GB RAM LPDDR5 with options to select from 128 or 256GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. The 8 Pro might be backed by a 4500mAh battery that is said to support 50W fast charging.

In terms of optics, the OnePlus 8 Pro leaked specs hint at a quad-camera setup on the back with a 60MP main camera setup. There is also said to be a 16 MP wide-angle, a 13 MP telephoto camera and a 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor. On the front, it could come with a 32MP Samsung Isocell GD1 sensor. The phone could be launched running on OxygenOS with Android 10 and might be priced around $799 (Rs 57,500 approx).

OnePlus 8 leaked specs

There aren’t many changes between the OnePlus 8 and its elder sibling. The OnePlus 8 is also said to sport a 6.55-inch AMOLED display but the resolution and refresh rate could be toned down to Full HD+ and 90 Hz respectively. It will most likely run on the same Snapdragon 865 SoC but could be offered in 6GB, 8GB and 12GB RAM variants and with storage options of 128GB or 256GB to select from. The smartphone could be backed by a 4000mAh battery that is said to support 30-watt fast charging (Warp Charge 30T).

The OnePlus 8 is said to feature a triple rear camera setup that may sport a 48MP main sensor. It could be supplemented by a 16MP wide-angle camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The front camera might be the same 32MP Samsung isocell GD1 sensor that is being used on the OnePlus 8 Pro. The handset is expected to launch running on Android 10 with OxygenOS on top. As per the listing, the OnePlus 8 might be priced at $549 (Rs 39,200 approx).

OnePlus 8 Lite leaked specifications

The OnePlus 8 Lite is expected to be the least powerful handset of the lot. If the leaked specs and pricing are to be believed, it could compete against most mid-range handsets like the Redmi K30 Pro and the Realme X2 Pro. The OnePlus 8 Lite could come equipped with a Full HD+ 6.4-inch AMOLED 90Hz display and might be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 SoC. It might be announced in only one 8GB RAM version with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.

The OnePlus 8 Lite might get a triple rear camera setup on the back with a 48MP main sensor. There might also be a 16MP wide-angle camera and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front might be a 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor for selfies. The whole package could be backed by a 4000mAh battery that is said to support 30W fast charging. The phone could be priced at $499 (Rs 35,600 approx).

Official IP rating on OnePlus 8 lineup?

Another rumour making rounds on the internet is that OnePlus might finally certify its upcoming phones for IP ratings. OnePlus previously boasted that its phones are water-resistant but said it didn’t go through the hassle of getting them IP certified as it would’ve added to its device’s cost. Now, the tipster Max J has tweeted an image that hints at IP rating on the upcoming OnePlus 8 lineup of devices. While the tipster didn’t explicitly say whether the OnePlus handsets might come with IP67 or IP68 rating, we can expect the Pro variant to get the official certification. OnePlus might play it smart and not get the standard and lite variant certified to keep the costs down.

Realme 5 Pro to get Realme UI based on Android 10 next month with no beta: Report

If you own a Realme 5 Pro, you’ll be glad to know that the handset is poised to receive the new Realme UI software that is based on Android 10. According to a recent report by PiunikaWeb, the Realme 5 Pro is set to receive the stable version of the new software next month in China, where it is called the Realme Q. The same software update is expected to make it to other regions soon after, including India. Interestingly, Realme is skipping the beta programme for this update in India.

According to the report, Realme published its software update release timeline back in January this year but only for models sold in China. According to this timeline, the Realme 5 Pro will get the stable version of Realme UI in March after seeing beta releases through the month of February. However, the Indian model is expected to receive the stable version of the update in March, therefore skipping any beta releases completely. Realme confirmed this development in a tweet a few days ago.

Realme Q is Realme 5 Pro in India; it's set to get the stable update in March

The Realme 8A Dual that was launched earlier this month is one of the first few handsets from the Chinese electronics manufacturer to run Realme UI based on Android 10. Previously launched Realme smartphones from 2019 ship with ColorOS 6.0 based on Android 9 Pie. ColorOS is a mobile operating system developed by Oppo. Since Realme was originally a sub-brand of Oppo, smartphones of both brands share ColorOS. However, Realme hopes to replace ColorOS with Realme UI on many of its current and future smartphone models.

The Realme 5 Pro was launched in India in early September 2019 at a starting price of Rs 13,999. Since then, the handset has been receiving software updates regularly. Recently, it received a Rs 1,000 price cut, effectively bringing its starting price down to Rs 12,999. The Realme 5 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 chip. Its screen measures 6.3 inches and has a maximum resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The back panel of the handset is home to a quad camera setup. Read more about it here.

Hey, realme UI Beta Program will not be available for realme 5 Pro. Keep following our threads for further announcements regarding the release of the stable update of realme UI for your device. Thanks!

Motorola Razrs screen peels off after one week, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip breaks with first fold: Are foldable phones still a novelty

Last year, foldable phones started hitting the market and we saw numerous problems associated with the new technology. The Samsung Galaxy Fold was recalled just before it hit the shelves since multiple reviewers reported that their units’ folding display was malfunctioning. This year, we saw a new wave of foldable phones being introduced in the market with the Motorola Razr and the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Since smartphone companies had more time to refine the novel technology, we assumed that the next generation of foldable devices would be durable, and, maybe, affordable. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case since the latest foldable phones are still falling behind, in terms of durability.

The new foldable phones around the block are the Motorola Razr and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Both handsets feature a clamshell-type folding design, which means one can flip them shut from the top and open em again to get a larger, slightly taller than regular display. Previously, Samsung’s first foldable phone had an issue with the folding display’s hinge, where dust or dirt could waltz right in and start creating problems for the folding mechanism and the display. The new Galaxy Z Flip also seems to be facing some issues and not with the hinge this time but with the folding glass display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip display woes

JerryRigEverything's Zack Nelson recently conducted a durability test on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. While Nelson branded the device as Samsung’s most durable folding phone yet, he also pointed out that the display seems to be made up of plastic and not glass. Samsung aggressively marketed a glass display on the Z Flip but it doesn’t really look like glass since Nelson managed to scratch it at Mohs level 2 with deeper scratches at Mohs level 3, which is what’s expected from a plastic display.

Samsung responded to The Verge with a statement on the durability video. It reads, “Samsung’s first-of-its-kind UTG technology is different from other Galaxy flagship devices. While the display does bend, it should be handled with care. Also, Galaxy Z Flip has a protective layer on top of the UTG similar to Galaxy Fold.” While the company says it has a protective layer on top of the Ultra Thin Glass or UTG, we can’t really be sure since the way pixels die when Nelson uses a Mohs pick does not hint at a glass display.

In a separate incident, an early buyer of the Galaxy Z Flip claimed that the folding display of his phone cracked with the first flip. It’s not clear whether the handset was folded inwards or flipped out, but Samsung seems to have reached out to the user and issued a replacement in one day. Going by the image posted on Twitter by the user, it seems like the display is made of glass, but once again, we can’t really be sure till we get our hands on the device and test it ourselves.

Received my Samsung Galaxy Z Flip just now. Opened the box. Removed the protective/instruction film. Flipped the phone as you would do since it’s a flip phone and this happened. I heard the crack as well.  cold weather?#SamsungGalaxy #ZFlip #samsung pic.twitter.com/j8KLL2vm8d

— Amir  (@mondoir) February 14, 2020  Motorola Razr’s screen peeling off?

The Motorola Razr is already getting not so great reviews by reviewers overseas. However, this is the first instance where the phone’s display is reported to be peeling off. As per an article by Input’s Raymond Wong, the folding display on the Motorola Razr that they have been using for almost a week is now peeling off right at the point where the display folds. As per Wong, a “giant horizontal air bubble” has popped up out of nowhere and because of it, the top lamination and the display panel are being separated.

As per Wong, “Sometime during my 45-minute train ride from Queens to Manhattan that left at 3:08 p.m. ET, the Razr's display peeled apart at the fold. I have no idea how it happened, but I can promise you it wasn't from impact; the phone was closed in my front jeans pocket the entire ride and there's no visible damage anywhere on the device. (And no, my jeans aren't super tight.)” Apparently, the more this Motorola Razr is being folded, the wider this air gap gets. There’s also no scratch on the display either or any type of physical damage, the report claims.

It seems like the screen started peeling on its own, but there’s no proof of that right now. Additionally, the layers separating due to the air bubble is said to have broken the touch-screen around the problematic area. The screen is said to be less responsive ever since the air gap formed around the hinge.

Wong speculates that the damage might’ve happened due to a change in temperature. He used the phone in temperatures nearing 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-1 degree Celsius) and then took it back to his warm apartment, before taking it out again with him into the cold weather. While this may be the cause, it is still not something we expect from a super expensive foldable phone. However, nothing is confirmed until the company issues an official statement on the subject.

Foldable phones still a novelty?

After coming across the recent two incidences of folding phones breaking, it seems like folding phones for everyday use might still be some years away. Noting that the Motorola Razr costs $1,500 (Rs 1.07 lakh approx) and the Galaxy Z Flip is priced at $1,380 (Rs 98,500 approx), such incidences won’t inspire consumers to invest in such expensive devices, which seem very well a novelty right now. However, since these are two isolated incidences, we can’t really be sure about the phone’s durability and will keep an eye out for more news on this front.
