Sony Xperia 1 II, Xperia 10 II specs leak, indicate Snapdragon 865 5G, Zeiss optics, 35mm jack

Sony appears poised for a proper return to the smartphone game as leaked specs of a couple of Xperia models surface online. The first appears to be a flagship model called Xperia 1 II, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G chip, a triple rear camera setup with Zeiss optics, and—surprisingly—a 3.5mm audio jack. The second appears to be a mid-range model called Xperia 10 II, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip, an inbuilt LDAC, and a triple rear camera setup.

Sony Xperia 1 II

The Xperia 1 II is clearly the successor to the Xperia 1 that was launched about a year ago in Europe. Going by the leaked spec sheet, it has a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED screen with an aspect ratio of 21:9. The panel does not support a high refresh rate like the competition but Sony claims its Motion Blur Reduction technology has a “90Hz equivalent benefit”. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G chip inside is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage space. The battery on board is a 4000mAh unit with support for wireless charging. The Xperia 1 II weighs 181g and has two colour options, namely black and purple.

Sony appears to have teamed up with German optoelectronics company Zeiss for the Xperia 1 II’s optics, a collaboration that was believed to be exclusive to HMD Global (Nokia) until now. The device’s back panel includes three 12MP cameras of varying focal length: 16mm, 24mm, and 70mm. There’s also a 3D iToF sensor for autofocus. The selfie camera is a single 8MP unit. Not only does the Xperia 1 II have that endangered 3.5mm audio jack but it also features stereo front speakers with Dolby Atmos and Sony’s proprietary sound technologies. The Xperia 1 II is designed for 21:9 gaming with support for a DualShock 4 mobile controller.

Sony Xperia 10 II

The Xperia 10 II is undoubtedly the successor to the Xperia 10 that was launched about a year ago in Europe. Whether it too will get a ‘Plus’ version is something we don’t know yet. But going by the specs leaked by XperiaBlog, it has a 6.0-inch OLED screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip on board is paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space. The battery is a 3600mAh unit. The Xperia 10 II not only gets a 3.5mm audio jack but also an inbuilt LDAC and Sony’s proprietary sound technologies.

The back panel of the Xperia 10 II sees three cameras: a 12MP primary sensor of 26mm focal length and phase-detection autofocus, an 8MP sensor of 52mm focal length, and an 8MP sensor of 16mm focal length. The selfie camera is a single 8MP unit. The Xperia 10 II weighs 151g and has two colour options, namely black and white. 

Summary

Since the specs of the Xperia 1 II came via XDA Developers Contributor Max Weinbach, we expect the information to be pretty accurate. Both models are IP65/68-rated for water and dust resistance. Interestingly, both of them aren’t shy to sport a full-length top bezel even though the competition offers other means of housing the selfie camera (waterdrop notch, punch-hole display, etc.) on the front face of the phone. We have yet to receive any information on the pricing and availability of the two new Xperia phones. However, if you live in India, don’t hold your breath because Sony is practically out of the running in the country.

Black Shark 3 spotted on 3C Certification Site, tips 65W Fast Charging

The next Black Shark gaming smartphone is on its way. The Black Shark 3 has been spotted on 3C certification site in China. According to the listing, the Black Shark 2 successor will have support for 65W fast charging. The listing does not reveal much about the upcoming gaming phone. As of now, Realme X50 Pro 5G is the only handset to have been officially confirmed to support 65W fast charging. 

A screenshot of 3C certification of the Black Shark 3 gaming phone was shared on Slashleaks. The listing suggests that it will support 5G. The handset is listed with model numbers Shark MBU-A0 and Shark KLE-A0. As mentioned before, the listing also says that Black Shark 3 will have support for 65W fast charging. Moreover, Black Shark recently announced its partnership with Tencent Games, which is popular for creating games like PUBG Mobile. The partnership may bring hardware and software optimisations on the next gaming phone from Black Shark.

Further, Black Shark CEO Luo Yuzhou was seen taking a poll on Weibo regarding the best charging combination for a 5G gaming phone. Most fans selected the 5000mAh with a 65W charging combination. It is said to allow the phone to fully charge in 38 minutes. 

Earlier, the Black Shark 3 5G was certified by MIIT, a Chinese certification website. In the certification, it revealed that the phone could possess 16GB of RAM. Theoretically, it should be the world's first phone with 16GB RAM. However, we should wait for the official announcement.

Realme X50 Pro 5G to be launched in India today: Live stream, specs, and more

Realme is all set to introduce its first 5G phone. The Realme X50 Pro 5G was supposed to be launched at an event in MWC 2020. However, after the cancellation of the event, Realme announced that it will be launching the handset in India on February 24. The Realme X50 Pro 5G is said to be priced around Rs 50,000 ($696) in India. The smartphone will be launched in New Delhi, and in Madrid through an online event. Even though 5G connectivity isn’t available in India as yet, it isn’t stopping companies from releasing their 5G devices in the country.

The Realme X50 Pro 5G is tipped to be the first phone from the company to cross the Rs 40,000 price boundary. It will sport a dual punch-hole notch with a 32MP selfie shooter. The device will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. Moreover, the phone will offer (NSA+SA) 5G connectivity. It will feature a super AMOLED display with support for 90Hz refresh rate.

On the optics front, the Realme X50 Pro 5G will pack a quad rear camera setup with a 64MP primary sensor. It will support a 20x hybrid zoom. The handset is teased to support 65W SuperDart fast charging technology. It may be made available in Rust Red and Moss Green colour options.

Oppo A31 may launch in India soon: Report

It seems like Oppo may launch a new budget smartphone in India soon. According to a report by 91Mobiles, the company may launch the Oppo A31 smartphone in the country soon. The website has posted a picture that not only suggests that the phone will launch soon but also some of the deals that buyers can expect.

As per the image, the phone will be available in Fantasy White, and A Mystery Black.  Further, buyers can get a five percent cash back on the purchase of the device using a credit/debit cards from ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, IDFC Bank and Yes Bank.  Further, buyers can also be able to make the purchase using a Bajaj Finserv card. On top of this, users may also get Jio data benefits of up to 7,050. 

The Oppo A31 has already been launched in Indonesia. The device packs a 6.5-inch display with a waterdrop display with an HD+ resolution. It is powered by a MediaTek Helio P95 Soc and is available in 4GB and 6GB variants. Users also get two storage variants namely 64GB and 128GB. In terms of optics, the device packs a triple-rear camera setup with a 12MP primary camera, a 2MP sensor with a macro lens and a 2MP sensor used or sensing depth. At the front is an 8MP unit. Other features of the phone include a 4230mAh battery.

It is not yet known if Oppo will launch all variants or what the final prince of the phone in India will be.

Smart speakers accidentally activate to random words between 15 and 19 times a day: Study

If you’ve ever been slightly paranoid about your smart speaker listening in to your conversation, well it looks like those fears might have a little merit to them. According to a study conducted by Northeastern University, smart speakers accidentally activate up to 19 times and may record for up to 43 seconds of audio.

The word ‘accidentally’ is key as the researchers noted that there were a lot of anecdotal evidence that pointed to smart speakers waking up after hearing a word that sounded a lot like their respective wake words. For example, a word like “seriously” sounds similar to “Siri” a wake word for the Apple HomePod. 

The study notes that “there are many other anecdotal reports of everyday words in normal conversation being mistaken for wake words.  For the past six months, our team has been conducting research to go beyond anecdotes through the use of repeatable, controlled experiments that shed light on what causes voice assistants to mistakenly wake up and record.” 

Researchers tested five types of speakers. This included the first-gen Google Home Mini, a first-gen Apple HomePod, the Harman Kardon Invoke, as well as the second and third-gen Amazon Echo Dots. the devices were then placed in a box and monitored using a camera. Speech was simulated by playing 125 hours of Netflix content from a variety of themes and genres. The test was then multiplied various times to understand which non-wake words were constantly leading to activation.

There was some good news for those who are slightly paranoid about there privacy as the study found no evidence that the devices constantly recorded conversations. However, it did notice that the average rate of activations ver device is between 1.5 to 19 times a day. The HomePod and Invoke activated the most, followed by the second-gen Echo Dot, Google Home Mini and the third-gen Echo Dot. It was also noted that the second-gen Echo Dot and Invoke devices have the longest activations at 20-43 seconds, while the Home pod and other Echo devices, over half the activations, were for six seconds or more. 

The researchers also note that it will continue to update their page with more details as they emerge.

Google warns select Huawei smartphone users to not sideload its apps and services

After nine months of being stopped from working with Huawei by the US Government, Google has published a support article that aims to clarify the situation. Tristan Ostrowski, legal director for Android and Google Play wrote a post that hopes to answer questions regarding the ban and also warn any current Huawei owners about sideloading Google applications. 

“We have continued to receive a number of questions about new Huawei devices (e.g., new models launching now, or earlier models launched after May 16, 2019, but now becoming available in new regions of the world) and whether Google’s apps and services can be used on these devices. We wanted to provide clear guidance to those asking these important questions,” Ostrowsky wrote in the post 

Ostrowsky reiterated that due to the restrictions put in place by the US government, new Huawei devices that were made available to the public after May 16, 2019, will not have Play Protect preloaded. This means that they will be considered ‘uncertified’ and will not be able to make use of Google’s apps and services. The post notes that Play Protect certified devices undergo “rigorous security review and compatibility testing process, performed by Google, to ensure user data and app information are kept safe.”

Users are also invited to check if their devices are Play Protect certified or not by clicking here. 

For those users who do not have Play Protect certified devices, Google has warned those users without Play Protect services to not try and sideload its apps and services. “Google apps will not work reliably because we do not allow these services to run on uncertified devices where security may be compromised. Sideloading Google’s apps also carries a high risk of installing an app that has been altered or tampered with in ways that can compromise user security,” Ostrowsky wrote.
