OnePlus to reveal something on March 3, and its not the OnePlus 8

There’s never a dull moment for the people at OnePlus. Just as the hype around the OnePlus Concept One was starting to simmer down, OnePlus UK’s twitter handle has announced the existence of another new product. A short video on the Twitter page lists March 3 2020 as the reveal date.

The video shows a collection of pipes and metallic structures, without giving a clear idea of what the device could be. According to OnePlus UK’s tweet, this is not a smartphone or even a commercial product for that matter, leading us to believe that OnePlus may be gearing up to reveal another concept project to the world.

Analysing the video, there seems to be a myriad of suggestions in there. At initial glance, the metallic parts seem to resemble the inside of a watch, but then we see a pipe-like structure that’s more commonly associated with the type of lens known as the probe lens. Briefly, we also see the number 6 machined into the side of one of the panels. Needless to say, the video is not giving much away, but thankfully, the official reveal is only a few days away.

OnePlus is expected to launch the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro in the coming months, expectedly a little sooner than usual. Usually, OnePlus themselves start releasing bits of official information about the phone ahead of launch, and since that hasn’t happened yet, we can assume that this teaser is not for the phone. OnePlus also recently showed off the Concept One, a smartphone that the company said will not be available for sale. The smartphone’s main USP was the electrochromic glass that was used to cover the camera assembly, making the cameras completely disappear when not in use. OnePlus also said that the glass could double us as a neutral density filter.

Google Authenticator app no longer safe thanks to new malware

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) was the industry’s answer to curbing illegitimate access for online accounts. This was especially the case to prevent bank accounts from being hacked and was eventually utilized by companies like Google, Facebook, Apple etc. Now a new security threat claims to be able to steal 2FA codes from the Google Authenticator.

According to Threatfabric, new Android malware is capable of stealing 2FA codes from Google’s app. Typically apps like Google’s 2FA or even Microsoft’s App for that matter are considered safer than the SMS method of receiving 2FA codes. This was because SMS isn’t transmitted over a secure protocol and can be intercepted. Then there’s the additional threat of SIM cloning that has led to multiple counts of banking fraud in the past. Now, it would appear that Google’s 2FA app has also been proven to be vulnerable.

According to Threatfabric, the malware is not yet being distributed or advertised on underground forums, suggesting that the hack may still be in testing stages. What we don’t know yet is whether the malware is exploiting something in the Android OS or a weakness in Google’s 2FA app to gain access to the codes. The report only lists the vulnerability to impact Android, meaning iOS users are still secure. This could also mean that the vulnerability exploits a combined vulnerability in Android and the 2FA app. There is also no information on whether the malware would make other 2FA apps vulnerable, but in either case, it is something to be supremely worried about.

Instagram brings Direct Messaging to Windows 10

Instagram, ever since its acquisition by Facebook, has slowly been expanding on its image as a social media platform. In its latest bid to increase the ways in which users can access the platform, Instagram has now finally brought direct messaging to Windows 10.

Instagram has updated its app on the Windows Store which now allows users to access their direct messages on their Windows 10 PCs. The interface of the app is very much like the one you’d experience on the web, but, with one addition; the DM button. Being able to send and receive messages on Instagram has just got more convenient, with the feature now being accessible on Windows 10 machines. Sadly, those who browse Instagram using web browsers will not be able to use the feature since its only available in the Windows app.

Instagram has slowly been expanding and opening up the ways in which users can engage with the platform, by initially making it possible to browse images using a web-browser. Slowly it allowed users to interact with the posts as well, allowing for comments, reactions and likes to be posted through the browser. In its recentmost development, Instagram brought Stories to the web, allowing people to view stories, but not interact with them. For the most part, posting content on Instagram via a web-browser is still missing, and likely that it would be the last thing the Facebook-owned company brings to its feature set.

In case you would like to use Instagram’s DM feature using your Windows 10 PC, then you’d need to download the Instagram app from the Microsoft Store.

GameStop reveals several PS5 features but its nothing we didnt already know

Sony has been silent about its upcoming PS5 for far too long. The last time the Japanese tech giant spoke about the console was at CES 2020 where we got a look at the official PS5 logo. Since then the only thing we know for sure is that Sony will not be present at E3 2020 and has also withdrawn from PAX and GDC 2020 due to the Coronavirus. GameStop seems to be looking to fill the void of PS5 news and has a listing page for the PS5 that reveals some details about the upcoming console. The page does not have any new information and only reiterates what we already know about the console.

The page talks about the fact that the console can play physical discs, something we are aware of. It also talks about the new features of the PS5 controller including the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, again features we have been aware of for months now. The listing also says that the console will have “full 8K TV support, Bespoke 8-core AMD chipset, 3D Audio, built-for-purpose SSD storage, backward compatibility with PS4 games/PSVR hardware, And ray-tracing capabilities.” Again, we have been aware of this information. Elaborating on the CPU, the listing says that the console will have an 8-core, 16-thread CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 microarchitecture.

Microsoft on the other hand recently released a blog post by Xbox Head, Phil Spencer. The blog highlights the fact that the console has a 12 Teraflop GPU based on RDNA 2. It has a ZEN 2 CPU along with SSD storage and also supports hardware-accelerated DirectX ray-tracing. It also supports HDMI 2.1 bringing with it features like ALLM, VRR and more. You can read all the information revealed by Phil Spencer here.

When it comes to games, Microsoft has confirmed that all first-party cross-gen games need to be purchased once. When you play a compatible game on the Series X, it will download the necessary update to take advantage of the new console. CD Projekt Red has said that Cyberpunk will need to be purchased only once on the Xbox. So if you purchase the game on your Xbox One and upgrade your console to the Series X, the game will download the relevant update when the developer releases it. This is called Smart Delivery and the option to partake is open to all developers.

Both Microsoft and Sony are slated to launch their new consoles in 2020.
