Vivo NEX 3S 5G with Snapdragon 865, curved display to be launched soon: Report

In less than a week after Vivo showcased its new APEX 2020 concept smartphone, we’re seeing reports of a Vivo NEX 3S 5G smartphone pop up online with similar specifications and features. According to GizmoChina, this new Vivo NEX 3S 5G is a production-ready embodiment of the APEX 2020 concept. It will reportedly feature the same curved display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip. Interestingly, Vivo could launch the NEX 3S 5G sometime later this month in China.

According to the report, which cites Digital chat station’s post on Weibo as a source, the upcoming Vivo NEX 3S 5G will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865 chip. It will also feature a curved (aka ‘waterfall’) display and support the same 55W fast charging technology seen on the recently announced IQOO 3 smartphone. On the TENAA certification website, the Vivo NEX 3S 5G is listed under the model number Vivo V1950A. At 219.5g, it’s also quite heavy.

From what we know so far, the upcoming Vivo NEX 3S 5G will sport a 6.89-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2256 pixels. The Snapdragon 865 chip on the inside will be complemented by 8GB of RAM, while storage options include 128GB and 256GB. On the back panel, the NEX 3S 5G will have as many as three cameras, including a 64MP primary sensor, a 13MP telephoto sensor, and a 13MP ultra-wide sensor. The selfie camera is the same 16MP pop-up unit seen on the Vivo NEX 3.

The APEX 2020 that Vivo announced recently has similar specifications. It features a 6.45-inch curved display that “bends at an angle of up to 120° on both sides”. The handset ditches physical side buttons for a “virtual pressure-sensing button”. The APEX 2020 is best known for its gimbal camera, which means the primary rear camera sensor is housed inside a tiny gimbal-like structure to help improve optical stabilisation while capturing photos. “Lab tests demonstrate that compared to the traditional OIS system, its stabilization angle is 200% extended,” claims Vivo in its news release.

Microsoft Surface Go 2 to feature Intel Core m3 chip, design tweaks: Report

Microsoft launched the Surface Go tablet in India a little over a year ago but appears ready to give it a quick upgrade sometime soon. According to a recent report from Windows Latest, Microsoft will equip the second-generation Surface Go with an Intel 8th Gen Core m3 CPU. Expected to hit the stores later this year, the Surface Go 2 will feature some minor design changes but won’t look drastically different from the way it does now. We can expect the Surface Go 2 to cost the same $399 (Rs 28,870 approx) as before.

The report indicates that the Microsoft Surface Go 2 will be powered by an Intel Core m3-8100Y CPU, which is a dual-core mobile processor built on a 14-nanometre process. It has a base frequency of 1.10GHz and a maximum boosted frequency of 3.40GHz. It will be accompanied by 8GB of RAM. Though Microsoft appears to be throwing a new CPU into the mix, it could continue to sell the base variant with Intel’s Pentium Gold 4415Y CPU and 4GB of RAM, especially in emerging markets such as India.

The report goes on to say that Microsoft will give the Surface Go 2 a mild exterior refresh but not an extensive overhaul. The compact Windows tablet is expected to retain its silver magnesium-alloy finish along with its thick black bezels. The size of the screen, too, is expected to go unchanged at 10 inches. The screen resolution, too, will be the same 1800 x 1200 pixels. Like before, Microsoft could sell Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + LTE variants of the Surface Go.

The outgoing Surface Go is available on Flipkart at a starting price of Rs 29,999. This base variant comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC flash storage. The high-end variant, which is the only other variant in India, offers 8GB of RAM and 128GB of solid-state storage. Both variants weigh half a kilogramme and ship with Windows 10 in S Mode, which does not allow app installations outside the Microsoft Store. This restriction, of course, can be circumvented. Sony PlayStation Plus subscribers rejoice: You will pay less from May 1

If you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber, then there is good news for you. The cost of the subscription to Sony’s monthly gaming service has reduced in India. A recent email sent to subscribers reads, “Starting on 1st May 2020, prices for PlayStation Plus subscriptions in India will be decreasing due to market conditions. The PlayStation Plus 12-month recurring payment plan will decrease to Rs 2,999. The PlayStation Plus 3-month recurring payment plan will decrease to Rs 1,199. The PlayStation Plus 1-month recurring payment plan will decrease to Rs 499. The new prices will take effect on 1st May 2020”. If you have set your PS Plus subscription to auto-renew, then the new prices will be effective starting May 1. If you have an annual renewal happening down the road, then we suggest you hold your horses and do it once the new reduced-priced take effect.

With Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription users get two free PS4 games per month. There is the occasional VR game thrown into the mix, but it isn’t monthly. In addition to the two monthly games, PlayStation Plus subscribers can also play online multiplayer games with their friends. During the days of the PS3, online gaming didn’t need you to have the monthly subscription, but with the PS4, if you want to play online, you need to have the subscription. You also get exclusive discounts on games and 100GB of cloud storage.

To put things into perspective, Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold subscription costs Rs 489 per month and the annual subscription costs Rs 2799 making it cheaper than the PS Plus subscription. Just like PS Plus, you get cloud saves and the ability to play online on the console. You get 4 free games each month with the Xbox Live Gold subscription (2 Xbox One games and 2 Xbox 360 games) all of which work on the Xbox One thanks to backward compatibility. So if you compare the 2 services, Xbox Live Gold seems like a better value proposition.

Moving over to other services, Sony has its cloud gaming service, PS Now, available internationally, but sadly the service isn't available in India. On the Xbox side of things, however, Microsoft has Game Pass, which is available in India in three options - Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass for the console, and Game Pass for the PC.

Game Pass for consoles gives you unlimited access to over 100 games to download and play on your system. New games are added regularly and Xbox Exclusive games are available as a part of the service on the launch date. Game Pass for the PC brings the same features but for PC only and it has an introductory price for new customers of Rs 50 for the first month.

Game Pass Ultimate, on the other hand, combines Game Pass for the Xbox along with Xbox Live Gold and also gives subscribers access to Game Pass on the PC. on Microsoft’s website, the subscription cost for game Pass Ultimate is Rs 999 per month, but a message was sent out to Game Pass Ultimate Subscribers stating that the subscription cost has reduced from Rs 999 to Rs 699. You can read more about that here.

Both Sony and Microsoft are all set to unveil their next-generation consoles expected to go on sale towards the end of 2020. Sony has revealed more information about the upcoming console and you can read more about it here. Microsoft has not only revealed the look of the next-gen Xbox Series X but also some of the specifications and features. You can read more about it here.

Game Developer Conference 2020 postponed due to health concerns over Coronavirus outbreak

The Game Developer Conference has been postponed due to health concerns over the Coronavirus outbreak. Over the recent week, companies have dropped out from attending the conference and three weeks before the event was supposed to take place, it has now been postponed to an unspecified date. The event itself has not been cancelled but will be shifted to “later in the summer”.

A statement on the GDC website says, "After close consultation with our partners in the game development industry and community around the world, we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the Game Developers Conference this March,". The show was scheduled for March 16 but companies such as Sony, Microsoft, EA, Epic, Unity, Activision Blizzard, and many more pulled out due to fears of the Cornovirus outbreak. Developers also skipped out on attending PAX East 2020 but that event is still taking place over this weekend.

This does not come as a surprise as the Coronavirus outbreak has also caused the cancellation of MWC earlier this year. Because of the severity of the outbreak, major events and smashed other global conferences have seen massive dropouts or outright cancellations. Who knows when this epidemic will subside but for now, it all seems up in the air.
