Redmi Note 9 series launch confirmed for March 12

Redmi has officially confirmed the launch date for the Redmi Note 9 series on Twitter. Scheduled for an official announcement on March 12 at 12pm, the Redmi Note 9 series will consist of the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro. According to the recent teaser posts put out by the Chinese electronics manufacturer on social media platforms, the Redmi Note 9 series will feature a quad-camera setup on the back panel. The new Redmi Note 9 series is expected to be priced around the Rs 15,000 mark.

The upcoming Redmi Note 9 series handsets will replace the outgoing Redmi Note 8 series, which consists of the Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro. Based on the details we have with us at the moment, we believe the Redmi Note 9 series will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 720G Mobile Platform with up to 8GB of RAM. We also think the Redmi Note 9 series will be charged using a USB Type-C cable. Whether it will sport a screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, a feature that is trending heavily of late, is hard to say at the moment.

Redmi's teaser video shows the history of the Redmi Note series since 2014

The outgoing Redmi Note 8 is a low-end smartphone with a 6.3-inch Full HD+ screen. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chip with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space. On the back, it houses as many as four cameras with the primary sensor being a 48MP unit. On the front, it houses a single 13MP camera for selfies. The Redmi Note 8 packs a 4000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. Sold in Neptune Blue, Moonlight White, and Space Black colours, the Redmi Note 8 starts at Rs 10,499.

The outgoing Redmi Note 8 Pro is a larger, more expensive version of the Redmi Note 8. It has a larger 6.53-inch HDR screen. It’s powered by a MediaTek Helio G90T chip with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage space. On the back, it houses as many as four cameras with the primary sensor being a 64MP unit. On the front, it houses a single 20MP camera for selfies. The Redmi Note 8 Pro packs a larger 4500mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. Sold in Halo White, Gamma Green, Shadow Black, and Dark Blue colours, the Redmi Note 8 Pro starts at Rs 13,999. Read our review of the Redmi Note 8 Pro here.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite tablet gets 4GB RAM64GB storage variant for Rs 22,990

If you’ve been eyeing the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite on Flipkart for some time now but haven’t yet hit the big orange ‘Buy Now’ button, there’s good news coming your way. There’s a new variant of the tablet out, and it’s got more RAM and double the storage space on board. The new Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite variant features 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage space. Announced on Friday, the new variant of the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite is priced at Rs 22,990.

The new variant of the Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite was announced last week but has yet to become available on Flipkart. Clicking the ‘Notify Me’ button on Huawei India’s website currently redirects users to a Flipkart page that lists the device as, ‘Coming Soon’. Like the older variant, which ships with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage space, the new variant comes with a single connectivity option: Wi-Fi + 4G LTE. The tablet is available in Champagne Gold and Space Grey colours.

The new variant commands a premium of Rs 2,000 over the older one but we believe it’s the one you should pick if you plan to multitask and store a lot of content on your new tablet. Another reason to pick the 4GB variant over the 3GB variant is Huawei’s uninspiring disclaimer about the actual RAM capacity. “Due to limitations in CPU processing power, and memory used by the operating system and pre-installed applications, the actual space available to users will be less than the nominal memory capacity.”

Apart from boosting the RAM and internal storage space, Huawei has made no other changes or upgrades to the MediaPad M5 Lite. It still runs EMUI 8.0, which is based on the dated Android 8.0 Oreo mobile operating system. The tablet’s battery, too, remains unchanged at 7500mAh. The Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite features a Kirin 659 chip and a 10.1-inch IPS LCD screen, which has a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite also features quad stereo speakers that are tuned by Harman Kardon.

Vivo NEX 3S 5G with Snapdragon 865, curved display to be launched soon: Report

In less than a week after Vivo showcased its new APEX 2020 concept smartphone, we’re seeing reports of a Vivo NEX 3S 5G smartphone pop up online with similar specifications and features. According to GizmoChina, this new Vivo NEX 3S 5G is a production-ready embodiment of the APEX 2020 concept. It will reportedly feature the same curved display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip. Interestingly, Vivo could launch the NEX 3S 5G sometime later this month in China.

According to the report, which cites Digital chat station’s post on Weibo as a source, the upcoming Vivo NEX 3S 5G will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 865 chip. It will also feature a curved (aka ‘waterfall’) display and support the same 55W fast charging technology seen on the recently announced IQOO 3 smartphone. On the TENAA certification website, the Vivo NEX 3S 5G is listed under the model number Vivo V1950A. At 219.5g, it’s also quite heavy.

From what we know so far, the upcoming Vivo NEX 3S 5G will sport a 6.89-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2256 pixels. The Snapdragon 865 chip on the inside will be complemented by 8GB of RAM, while storage options include 128GB and 256GB. On the back panel, the NEX 3S 5G will have as many as three cameras, including a 64MP primary sensor, a 13MP telephoto sensor, and a 13MP ultra-wide sensor. The selfie camera is the same 16MP pop-up unit seen on the Vivo NEX 3.

The APEX 2020 that Vivo announced recently has similar specifications. It features a 6.45-inch curved display that “bends at an angle of up to 120° on both sides”. The handset ditches physical side buttons for a “virtual pressure-sensing button”. The APEX 2020 is best known for its gimbal camera, which means the primary rear camera sensor is housed inside a tiny gimbal-like structure to help improve optical stabilisation while capturing photos. “Lab tests demonstrate that compared to the traditional OIS system, its stabilization angle is 200% extended,” claims Vivo in its news release.
