The Social Music Streaming App for Gen Z Resso debuts in India

There's no dearth of music streaming apps in India. In addition to the popular options such as Spoitfy, Google Play Music and Apple Music, we even have options like Gaana, Saavn and Wynk that are fairly popular. However, Resso aims to stand out by being the world's first social music streaming app. Almost like a social media of sorts, specifically for listening to and sharing your favourite music.

To that end, Resso comes with three primary social features, which are Vibes, Comments and Lyric Quotes.

Resso

Social streaming features

Vibes allow users to express themselves by creating videos, gifs and pictures based on songs they're listening to which are easy to share. This also includes adding lyrics to those media.

Comments will allow users to comment on songs, these comments can be replied to, much like on a YouTube video. This creates a platform for people with similar taste in music to interact with each other.

Finally, Lyric Quotes allows users to select and share their favourite lyrics, by using different backgrounds, font styles, etc and creating visual snippets that you can share on social media.

Speaking on the debut of Resso, Hari Nair, Head of Music Content and Partnership, Resso had this to say, "Gen Z and millennials are at the core of our offering and both music and social networking are central to their daily lives. Our goal is to encourage them as well as everyday music listeners to express themselves in an interactive and engaging way. The relationship between music and the listener is currently passive, with Vibes, Comments and other features, Resso aims to transform this through a new and compelling music streaming experience."

Music and discoverability

Resso will feature music from all major Global music publishers, according to Hari Nair, and additionally, there are plenty of independant and local artists as well. Resso also features songs in a few Indian languages as well, with the plan to expand to more languages. Major global, local and independent labels include Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Merlin and Beggars Group, T-Series, Saregama, Zee Music, YRF Music, Times Music, Tips, Venus, Shemaroo and regional majors such as - Speed Records, Anand Audio, Lahiri Music, Divo, Muzik 247.

One of the standout features we saw in Resso was the music library segmentation. Music is divided not only by genre, but by sub-genre and sub-sub-genre, allowing you to pinpoint your favourite type of music. This in turn makes it easier for the app to discover songs of your liking as well.

Pricing

Resso can be downloaded for free on both Android and iOS with limited functionality. Premium allows users an ad-free experience, downloadable music, higher quality audio and more. The monthly premium subscription costs INR 99 on Android and INR 119 for iOS users.

Apple developing six mini-LED devices, including 141-inch MacBook Pro: Report

Apple, it appears, is on a serious mission not only to increase the screen size of the popular MacBook Pro but also to refresh the screen technology on a bunch of its upcoming devices. According to a recent report filed by MacRumors, Apple is currently working on as many as six new devices that will all feature a screen with mini-LED technology. One of these devices is expected to be a new 14.1-inch MacBook Pro that will replace the outgoing 13.3-inch model.

The report cites an investor note sent out by noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo as a source for this new information. “We predict that Apple is currently developing six mini-LED-support products (vs. the previous report of only two products), including a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, a 27-inch ‌iMac Pro‌ in 4Q20, a 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (upgraded from 13.3-inch), a 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, a 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini in 2020,” reads the note. iPad and iPad mini fans can definitely expect a better viewing experience from the next generation.

If the analyst’s quote is interpreted correctly, Apple will invest more time and effort into the development and promotion of mini LEDs in the next five years. What’s more, this effort is likely to remain unaffected by the recent COVID-19 outbreak, which has forced many smartphone makers to rework their launch and supply schedules. The mini LED technology essentially allows more, smaller LEDs to be placed behind an LCD panel for improved picture quality through better light control. In other words, they enable specific parts (or zones) of the panel to be dimmed independently.

According to Kuo, the new 14.1-inch MacBook Pro could be launched alongside a refreshed 16-inch version sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. Only about three months ago did Apple refresh the 15-inch MacBook Pro by expanding its screen size to 16 inches. The Cupertino-based giant also threw in larger heatsinks, redesigned speakers, more powerful fans, and a reworked keyboard with improved ‘Magic’ scissor 1-millimetre keys. WhatsApp for Android, iOS finally gets Dark Mode

If you’re one of the countless users who have been waiting for WhatsApp to get a dark theme with bated breath, it’s time to rejoice. The latest stable version of WhatsApp for Android and iOS finally supports dark mode. According to the Facebook-owned messaging app company of the same name, the feature will pop up as an option in WhatsApp’s settings in “the coming days”. If you’ve got dark mode turned on at a system level on your iOS 13 or Android 10 device, you can expect the shift to the dark theme to happen automatically sometime soon.

WhatsApp says it carefully picked new colours for the app’s dark mode in order to reduce eye strain and increase the viewability of important UI elements. “We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using colour and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out,” reads a line from WhatsApp’s latest blog post. WhatsApp also released a video with the popular Simon & Garfunkel track, The Sound of Silence, to promote the much-awaited feature.

If you’re already a user of dark mode at a system level on your iOS 13 or Android 10 device, then WhatsApp, too, should appear in a dark theme when the feature becomes available. However, if you want to use dark mode solely on WhatsApp or own a device that runs Android 9 Pie or older, then you can head to Settings > Chats > Theme and tap ‘Dark’ within the app to enable it. Though the feature colours the app’s elements dark, it doesn’t make them completely black, which is known to save power on OLED screens.

WhatsApp has been testing the new dark mode feature on beta versions of the app for Android and iOS for quite some time now. Many believe WhatsApp should have rolled it out much sooner. In fact, Facebook, too, only recently received the feature on the web. Instagram, on the other hand, received dark mode in early October 2019. With both Android and iOS now supporting dark mode natively, we can expect more apps in the future to feature it as well.
