Oppo Find X2 camera stack with periscope sensor, 79-hour battery life teased

With just a day left to go for the launch of its next flagship smartphone, Oppo has opened the floodgates for online teasers and posts regarding the Oppo Find X2. The most recent one gives us a closer look at the handset’s camera stack, while the company’s VP’s tweets say the handset can manage close to 8 hours of battery life when the screen is set to 3K QHD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Oppo will launch the Find X2 tomorrow at 3:00 pm IST (10:00 am CET).

Oppo’s teaser image on Chinese social media platform Weibo shows us what the Find X2’s rear camera stack looks like. By the looks of it, one of the sensors is a periscope unit, much like the one seen on the Huawei P30 Pro. Expect the rumoured 13MP sensor to have telephoto capabilities. A label just below the sensor reads, ‘Hybrid Zoom’. There are two other sensors below it. According to a recent report by PlayfulDroid, the primary sensor is a 13MP unit, while the ultra-wide sensor is a custom-developed Sony IMX586 48MP unit.

Meanwhile, Brian Shen, Oppo’s VP of Global Marketing, has been sending out updates regularly on Twitter about the Find X2’s top features. According to him, the Find X2 can manage 7.9 hours of battery life when the screen is set to 3K QHD resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. “Intelligent refresh rate mode can get an extra 10% more battery time, but considering it has SuperVOOC 2.0 it's no worry to have everything maxed out!” he added last evening.

The Oppo Find X2 will replace the outgoing Find X, which was launched in India in 2018. The Oppo Find X is currently on sale on Flipkart for Rs 58,990. Available in Glacier Blue and Bordeaux Red, the Find X is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage space. It features a dual camera setup on the back panel and a motorised pop-up mechanism for the single selfie camera. Its 6.4-inch curved screen sports a maximum resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. Redmi Note 9 Pro spotted on Geekbench, live image also appears online

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is all set to be introduced on March 12. Now, ahead of the launch, the device has been spotted on Geekbench. Further, a live image of the phone’s back panel has leaked online. The image showcases the quad rear camera setup on the blue-coloured back. It resides in a square-shaped module that was also teased by the company.

As for the Geekbench listing, the Redmi Note 9 Pro scored 569 in the single-core test and 1755 in the multi-core test. There is “curtana” mentioned in the motherboard field which could be the codename of the smartphone or the CPU. It will be powered by a Qualcomm chipset that includes an octa-core processor with 1.80GHz base frequency. It could be the Snapdragon 720G. For reference, its predecessor, the Redmi Note 8 Pro was fueled by a MediaTek chipset, namely, the Helio G90T SoC.

On the listing, the device is equipped with 6GB RAM and comes pre-installed with Android 10. The other expected features of the Note 9 Pro are 22.5W fast charging, and gaming capabilities.

Another leaked render shows a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for housing the front-facing snapper. There’s no fingerprint scanner visible on the phone’s back panel which could mean that the company has opted to integrate it with the power button.

Redmi was supposed to hold an on-ground event on March 12. However, it got cancelled over the Coronavirus outbreak. The phone is expected to be launched alongside the Redmi Note 9. Now, the event will be live-streamed online on March 12.

Google Photos poised for refresh with updated design: Report

Google, it appears, is gradually retiring the hamburger menu from some of its apps. The heavily populated hamburger menu, which is usually accessed by either clicking on the hamburger icon or swiping right from left edge of the screen, went missing on the latest version of Google Maps a few weeks ago. Google then used a greyed-out icon and a tooltip to point users to an updated dropdown panel accessed from the user icon in the search bar. Google is carrying out a similar modification in the Google Photos app now.

According to a recent report filed by Android Police, the upcoming version of Google Photos no longer features the hamburger menu. The change is apparently part of a visual overhaul that Google is currently testing. Like Maps, the user icon in the search bar is the place to go to switch accounts, access device folders, and launch PhotoScan. It also has a few new options, including Categories (such as Screenshots, Selfies, 360 Photos & Videos, etc.) and Recently Added (an option Google reportedly promised to add).

Screenshots from the report show other changes in the user interface apart from the missing hamburger menu. For example, the lower navigation bar no longer contains an ‘Albums’ tab. Instead, there’s a ‘Library’ tab that leads the user to the same screen with a new section containing, ‘Favorites’, ‘Archive’, ‘Trash’, and ‘Utilities’ options. There’s also a new 'Search' tab in the navigation bar, which is presumably for users who fail to spot the persistent search bar at the top.

According to the report, the new changes in the Google Photos app will arrive as a server-side update sometime in the next few days but it’s best to keep the app updated to the latest version anyway. Google recently redesigned the Google Maps logo to celebrate the service's 15th anniversary. At that time, it also added a new ‘Contribute’ tab to the lower navigation bar, which allows users to share local knowledge about places in the map. You can expect the updated Google Photos app to make it to your devices in the next few days.
