Twitter is testing a stories-like feature called fleets but fans are not thrilled

While there may be many social media users out there who would like to see the concept of stories come to Twitter, there are certainly enough who wouldn’t. But to the dismay of such users, Twitter is showing off a new feature under test called fleets. In short, fleets are user updates that last only for 24 hours, just like stories on Facebook and Instagram. A fleet can be made up of text, images, videos, and GIFs but it can’t be retweeted or liked. Twitter is currently testing fleets in Brazil for Android and iOS devices.

“Fleets are a way to share fleeting thoughts. Unlike Tweets, Fleets disappear after 24 hours and don’t get Retweets, Likes, or public replies-- people can only react to your Fleets with DMs,” writes Kayvon Beykpour, the Product Lead for Twitter in a tweet. New fleets from followed users won’t appear on the Twitter timeline but will show up as tiny clickable icons in a dedicated row above it in a manner similar to stories on Facebook and Instagram.

When Twitter acquired visual storytelling startup Chroma Labs last month, numerous netizens and reporters predicted that the popular microblogging service would soon try its hand at stories. And sure enough, it has now. Even though Twitter is only testing fleets in Brazil, it’s receiving a lot of backlash from hardcore Twitter fans for trying to introduce the feature. Hundreds of thousands of tweets that were sent out since Beykpour’s announcement bear the hashtag #RIPTwitter as a sign that Twitter has lost its identity in the social media market.

Snapchat was the first platform to offer the concept of stories nearly eight years ago, which involves short-lived user posts consisting of media and filters. Instagram received a similar feature in 2016, while Facebook received it in early 2017. Popular messaging app WhatsApp, too, received a similar feature called status the same year. These Facebook-owned platforms have since been criticised for stealing the idea from Snapchat. If the new fleets feature is released globally, Twitter will be the latest social media platform to feature stories.

Huawei P40 leaked in hands-on video ahead of launch

While Huawei is yet to release any details about the upcoming P40 series of smartphones, Digital Trends have apparently managed to get their hands on one of the upcoming smartphones. During their hands-on session with the Huawei Mate XS, they also got a chance to see a prototype of the Huawei P40. The P40 bit is an educated guess on their part, given that they were not allowed to use the camera, see the software or photograph the screen. Essentially, all the inferences are drawn from seeing the rear side of the smartphone.

It should be made very clear that the device being spoken of here was said to be a prototype, and hence, any details that were revealed could be altered by the time the phone launches. The people over at Digital Trends hypothesise that the device they got their hands on was the P40 and not the P40 Pro for several reasons. Firstly, the camera array on the device does not match the one shown on the leaks of the P40 Pro. The P40 Pro also seems to have one additional camera on its larger camera bump.

Huawei is expected to unveil the P40 series of smartphones on March 26, which will include the Huawei P40 Pro, the Huawei P40 and maybe even a Huawei P40 Pro Premium Edition. The company has already announced the Huawei P40 Lite a few days ago. Rumours suggest that the Huawei P40 Pro will house a 52-megapixel sensor alongside a 40-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel sensor for the telephoto lens. As of now, all specs about the upcoming smartphones in the P40 series remain a rumour, but thankfully, the official launch is now less than two weeks away.

These developers managed to get Android working on iPhones but only barely

Despite a decade of existing together, iPhones and Android ecosystems are still poles apart and remain highly distinct from each other, with a never-ending user war between which is better. But if this new project has its way, you may soon be able to run Android OS on iPhones.

Called “Project Sandcastle”, the project has a website up and running detailing how a decade after its co-founders ported Android to the original iPhone, they have managed to do it once again after 13 years of the iPhone development.

The port is still in beta and available for download on the website. It’s a port of Android 10 that works on a handful of old iPhones. Presently, the devs have only managed to port Android to the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and the 7th-Gen iPod Touch.

Even then, the port itself is highly limited for now. You won’t get the basic functions, like cellular connectivity, Bluetooth, camera and audio. Basically, unless you’re an enthusiast with a dream of seeing Android boot up on your iPhone, there’s no point taking the extra pain. This isn’t daily driver material yet.

The project itself holds promise, though and provides a way out for users who love Apple’s hardware but can’t really resign themselves to using iOS. In the future, this could be a viable option provided these guys manage to bring a stable, working port.

This isn’t the first time someone has ported Android over to iPhones, however. The same pair of developers got Android working on the original iPhones 13 years back. Now, David Wang and Chris Wade are at it again.

Tata Sky HD, SD set-top boxes set to become more expensive

A new Tata Sky subscription is now more expensive than before. Prices of new set-top boxes have been hiked by another Rs 100 for both HD and SD set-top boxes.  The increase in prices comes after a month of offering a Rs 100 discount for HD subscribers. However, the new increase in prices are applicable on both HD and SD subscriptions.

The hike in the price is strange because just last month, Tata Sky briefly stopped offering SD connections and was only selling the HD option to new customers. It seems now Tata Sky is back with SD set-top boxes with a new price that is Rs. 100 higher than what it was previously.

At present, both HD and SD set-top boxes are offered at Rs 1,499, which is Rs. 100 more than the Rs 1,399 price previously. In fact, the increased price is basically the old price that Tata Sky used to charge new customers before it started offering a discount.

With the new prices, a Tata Sky subscription becomes more expensive than Airtel but cheaper than DishTV. Airtel is selling the HD set-top box at Rs 1,300, while DishTV is offering services starting at Rs 1,599.

Furthermore, on top of increasing chargers for new customers, Tata Sky has also hiked prices for multi-TV connections. A secondary SD connection from Tata Sky has been increased to Rs 1,399 from Rs 1,299, while a secondary HD connection is priced at Rs 1,199, up from Rs. 999.

OnePlus 8 Lite leak reveals a 90Hz display, Mediatek Dimensity 1000 SoC and more

OnePlus usually launches two variants of its flagships early in the year. However, this time around, it is tipped to launch a Lite variant of its latest flagship. The OnePlus 8 Lite could mark OnePlus’ re-entry in the mid-range smartphone segment. Ahead of the official announcement, the device specifications have appeared online. The specifications, price and launch timeline of the OnePlus 8 Lite have been revealed.

The OnePlus 8 Lite is tipped to sport a 90Hz refresh rate 6.4-inch AMOLED display. OnePlus is said to use a MediaTek chipset for the first time. It may be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 SoC. The device is said to come with an in-display fingerprint scanner. As for the optics, the leaked renders have shown a triple rear camera setup. It may sport a 48MP primary camera alongside a 16MP and 12MP sensors for ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lens respectively. The device could pack a 4000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging. Further, it is rumored to be made available in two variants: 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB.

OnePlus 8 Lite price is said to be 400 GBP, which is around 511 USD and approximately Rs 37,500. That is actually a high asking price for a Lite model especially when the OnePlus 7T is now selling for Rs 34,999 in India. However, it is highly likely for OnePlus to price it lower in India than the international markets.

Moreover, rumor has that OnePlus 8 Lite will be made available in India and other markets by July 2020. Hence, it may launch after the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, which are rumored to be launched in mid-April.
