New Nokia 5G smartphone to be launched on March 19, star in upcoming Bond film

Everyone understands the significance of the toys showcased in James Bond films. After all, the series has a long history of popularising cars and gadgets, including the classic Aston Martin DB5 and the more recent Sony Xperia Z5. That’s exactly why HMD Global has decided to place its new Nokia 5G smartphone strategically in a scene from the upcoming film, No Time to Die. The new Nokia flagship, which we believe could be called Nokia 9.2, will be launched on March 19.

The news of the new Nokia smartphone launch comes to us in the form of a recent tweet posted by HMD Global Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas, which clearly suggests a Bond tie-in and reveals the launch date. Moreover, TechRadar reports it received an early preview of an upcoming 90-second promo for the film in which character Agent Nomi (a 00 agent who supposedly enters service after Bond’s retirement) is reportedly seen using the new Nokia handset.

Screenshots from TechRadar’s report suggest that the upcoming Nokia has a large screen with a tall (perhaps 21:9) aspect ratio and a tiny circular notch for the selfie camera. In the unreleased promo, Agent Nomi reportedly says, “36 hours in pursuit, and we're still going strong,” while using the phone, which suggests the battery inside the handset is rated for two days of use. On the back, the handset reportedly houses a circular camera bump with four sensors and a fingerprint scanner.

The promo reportedly also shows Agent Nomi using Google Assistant to perform various tasks on the new Nokia. This comes as no surprise considering the fact that all modern Nokias come with deep Google Assistant integration. While the launch of the new James Bond film has been pushed to November owing to growing concerns over the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, the launch of the new Nokia 5G smartphone is set to happen on March 19 in London. If you haven’t already watched the trailer for No Time to Die, click here to view it.

No Time To Wait. We have something very special lined up for you. #nokiamobilelive pic.twitter.com/xQAZWok0v6

Apple to allow third party apps to send ads as Push Notifications on iOS

The next big disruptive change to iOS won't be in the form of a new version of Apple’s mobile operating system but will instead come from third-party apps. Apple has today announced that they will let apps use push notifications to deliver advertisements, a move that the company has blocked for years. So what changed?

For some time now, Apple has been very strict about how applications could use the push notification functionality. Any kind of advertising or marketing was banned from the feature. However, in the recent past, Apple has sent out push notifications to promote Apple Music and even Carpool Karaoke. This ruffled feathers in the developer community as it was seen that Apple was breaking the rules, simply because it owned the ring. Now as a way to be fair to everyone, Apple will allow apps to send advertising messages through Push Notifications, provided users specifically opt-in for it.

While it may appear like Apple has left a loophole for developers to exploit, that isn’t the case. The exact language from Apple’s App Store Review Guideline document states that “Push Notifications must not be required for the app to function and should not be used to send sensitive personal or confidential information. Push Notifications should not be used for promotions or direct marketing purposes unless customers have explicitly opted in to receive them via consent language displayed in your app’s UI, and you provide a method in your app for a user to opt-out from receiving such messages. Abuse of these services may result in revocation of your privileges.” You can read all the guidelines here.

Apple explicitly states that acceptance of Push Notification must not be required for the App to function, which means App developers can’t neuter the app simply because you didn’t opt-in to receive push notifications. However, what is not clear is whether app developers will be required to have a separate permission toggle for opting in to receive advertising through push notification. From past behaviour, it wouldn’t be surprising if app developers decide to hold users, hostage, by creating only a single prompt for all push notifications, which will also include advertising messages.

Given that this is the first time Apple has opened up these floodgates, we’re sure the company will tweak the policy based on user feedback. Hopefully, this won't turn iOS into an advertisement-ridden operating system, unlike some Android counterparts.

OnePlus now offers doorstep repair service in India

India is a market that thrives on customer convenience services such as doorstep delivery and pick-up. It abounds in web- and app-based package delivery services such as Dunzo and eKart. Just about anything and everything can be home-delivered these days, including groceries, medicines, and even lead-acid inverter batteries. It’s only fitting then that OnePlus should expand its customer service offerings to include doorstep repair in order to deepen its footprint in the Indian market as a premium smartphone brand.

The well-known Chinese electronics company announced earlier today that OnePlus customers would be able to avail a doorstep repair service for their handset through the OnePlus Care app that is downloadable from the Google Play Store. The new service is currently available across several Indian metros, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune. The company plans to expand the service to all tier-1 and several tier-2 cities in India by the end of the year.

According to OnePlus, customers can use the app to book a time slot that is convenient for them and expect an authorised engineer to visit their place of residence to perform handset repairs. “As an extension to this initiative, OnePlus also provides free product pick-up and drop-off service for OnePlus users seeking to resolve any issues with their product. This service is available in over 8000 pin codes, covering 80% of India,” reads the press release shared with us.

OnePlus says that it has launched the doorstep repair service to boost its brand image as one that caters to premium smartphone users. Prior to the launch, it ran the service in pilot phase for a period of six months. It isn’t clear at the moment if OnePlus will expand the service to other countries. Reports found online say OnePlus will launch the OnePlus 8 series of smartphones sometime in the middle of April. For the first time in OnePlus history, the new series should consist of not two but three models.
