Asus announces Android 10 update for ROG Phone II

Users of Asus’ latest gaming smartphone, the ROG Phone II, have a new reason to be happy this Holi season. Asus has officially announced today through its ROG Global Twitter account that the ROG Phone II is currently receiving the stable version of the Android 10 software update that was available in beta until now. Users can either wait for the update notification to pop on their handset or head to Settings > System > System update on their handset to check for it manually.

In what can only be considered an unanticipated social media faux pas, Asus initially published the announcement on Twitter before hurriedly taking it down yesterday. It’s likely the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer decided to make some final tweaks to the update roll-out procedure when the tweet was mistakenly sent out. However, the company’s tweet from earlier today appears to be final even though Asus hasn’t shared too many details about the update.

Asus’ announcement on Twitter does not talk about the size of the update or the changelog. It also doesn’t mention which regions are set to receive it first. The tweet states simply, “Starting from today, #ROGPhoneII users will begin to see the Android 10 update hit their devices.” The company has also yet to update the ROG Phone II’s official support page with the new firmware file as it still provides the December 2019 update. Expect the new Android 10 update to weigh close to 2.5GB in download size.

The Asus ROG Phone II was launched in India in September 2019 at a starting price of Rs 37,999. Like the competition, this gaming smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus chip with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage capacity. Its display is a large 6.59-inch Full HD+ AMOLED unit with a 120Hz refresh rate and its 6000mAh battery supports 30W fast charging using the bundled charger. Motorola One Mid spotted on Geekbench with 6GB RAM, launch imminent

Motorola is rumoured to launch its next flagship, the Motorola Edge+ soon. Plenty of details, including the leaked shots of the Edge+, have surfaced in recent reports. Another device that could make an appearance alongside the flagship model is Motorola One Mid. The device has appeared on Geekbench, which has revealed some of its specifications. The One Mid scored 2534 and 6961 in the single-core and multi-core tests, respectively.

According to the Geekbench listing, the Motorola One Mid will be powered by a Qualcomm octa-core processor that has a base frequency of 1.80GHz. It may be the Snapdragon 675 chipset. It could have 6GB RAM and run Android 10. According to a previous report, the phone will have a 6.53-inch 2340 x 1080p display but it is not known what design it will have. It is said to sport a notch-less design and come with a pop-up selfie camera. The Motorola One Mid could pack a 4000mAh of battery.

Motorola has already confirmed that it will be launching phones powered by Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC and the mid-range Snapdragon 765 SoC. Hence, the Edge+ could feature the former, while the One Mid may be powered by the latter.

As for the Motorola Edge+, it appears to feature a curved panel much like that of the Vivo Nex 3 and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. However, it retains the physical volume buttons. The Motorola flagship phone is reportedly codenamed ‘burton' or ‘racer turbo'. The handset  is rumoured to feature a 6.67-inch full-HD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels) display with a punch-hole notch. In the images, the size of the hole-punch is noticeably smaller than the one on the Motorola One Vision. It was also spotted on Geekbench. It scored 4106 in the single-core test and recorded a score of 12823 in the multi-core test.

AMD reveals next-gen Ryzen, EPYC CPU roadmap, Big Navi coming by end of 2020

AMD just hosted its annual Analyst Day, where CEO Dr Lisa Su outlined the company’s future plans in great detail. Part of what was shared includes information on the next-generation Ryzen CPUs, RDNA2 based GPUs, and some information on the fabrication node and even AMD’s server-side products.

For consumers, there’s a lot of interesting products coming up. AMD's next-generation processors (codenamed Vermeer) will be based on what the company calls Zen 3 architecture. It will continue to use the 7nm fabrication process. The processors are expected to be launched this year, with the launch flowing into 2021 for some regions. Next, we finally have a concrete timeline for Big Navi, or RDNA 2 based graphics cards. Dr Su said that GPUs using the RDNA 2 architecture should be out by the end of 2020. The company said that users can expect not only 4K gaming with ray tracing using the new cards but also up to a 50-percent improvement in power efficiency.

While news for consumer products was definitely interesting, the server-side of things is where AMD is really taking a huge leap. Announced during the meeting was Genoa, the next generation of EPYC processors based on Zen 4 cores that will be manufactured on the 5nm process. For server-side operations, the company also announced a new architecture called CDNA, which focuses more on compute performance than anything else. Lastly, AMD is also taking its Infinity Fabric into its third generation and renaming it to Infinity Architecture. The reason for this is simple. Up until now, Infinity Fabric would allow communication between CPU-CPU or GPU-GPU clusters, but with Infinity Architecture, the link would also allow an interconnection between CPU-GPU clusters.

Based on these three new technologies, AMD will manufacture the next supercomputer for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The LLNL conducts research across multiple disciplines, such as material science, forensics, explosives and even nuclear fusion. The new supercomputer called El Capitan will be more powerful than the current top 200 supercomputers combined and will be the first to break the 2-exaflop barrier for supercomputers. El Capitan will use all three of the new server-side technologies announced during the Financial Analyst Days, that is, the new Zen 4 based EPYC Genoa processors, the Infinity Architecture interconnect and the Radeon Instinct GPUs.

All of this makes it seem like AMD is pegged to continue its assault on Intel’s marketshare, both in consumer and enterprise businesses.

Apple iPhone SE 2 launch could be pushed to Q2 2020 owing to COVID-19 outbreak: Report

The COVID-19 outbreak has no doubt caused many global technology brands to delay the launch of their 2020 products. Apple is believed to be one such affected entity. According to a report filed by DigiTimes on March 5, Apple has asked its Taiwan-based PCB suppliers in the supply chain to defer pending shipments for what is believed to be the company’s next low-cost iPhone to the second quarter of the year. The handset in question could be called iPhone SE 2.

“As the coronavirus outbreak has reportedly prompted Apple to defer pull-in of PCB shipments for its iPhone SE2, originally set for launch in the first quarter, leading PCB maker Zhen Ding Technology - believed to be a supplier for the new iPhone - has expected better-than-usual revenue performance for the traditional off season in the second quarter,” reads an excerpt from the report. In our previous article, we said Apple could launch the iPhone SE 2 sometime in March, given that there were plenty of signs suggesting it. You can read more about that here.

What we find most puzzling is that another report filed by DigiTimes on the same day contradicts the first. “Apple's new entry-level LCD iPhone, tentatively dubbed iPhone SE2, has entered the final stage of engineering validation in Zhengzhou, China, where the vendor's major manufacturing partners Foxconn Electronics and Pegatron run assembly lines,” reads an excerpt from the second report. Given that Apple also fears a “temporarily constrained” iPhone supply worldwide, we can assume the iPhone SE 2 will be launched in a couple of months.

The original iPhone SE was introduced in the market in early 2016 and pulled from it last year. Like what is currently rumoured about the upcoming iPhone SE 2, the iPhone SE was a reworked version of a past model—the iPhone 5s. The iPhone SE 2, on the other hand, is expected to take after the iPhone 8. We can expect it to sport the same 4.7-inch IPS LCD screen and the same single 12MP rear camera. It should, however, come with updated internals for faster performance. It should also get an update to iOS 14 later this year.

Huawei P40 Pro penta-lens camera gets detailed in the new leak

Huawei P40 series is all set to be announced on March 26. Moreover, the company has already launched the Huawei P40 Lite and P40 Lite E in the market. However, ahead of the official announcement of the Huawei P40 Pro, its camera configuration has been leaked online. The P40 Pro is expected to feature a penta-lens rear camera setup and dual selfie shooters housed in a punch-hole display.

According to a popular tipster on Twitter, the Huawei P40 Pro will come equipped with as many as five cameras on its rear. He suggests that P40 Pro’s penta-lens camera system will comprise of the 1/1.28” Sony IMX700 52-megapixel Hexadeca Bayer RYYB lens, a 1/1.5” Sony IMX650 40-megapixel ultrawide Cine RGGB lens, a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, a dual prism periscope zoom lens with 10x optical zoom and a ToF (Time of Flight) sensor.

Another leak suggests that this sensor will be a custom design by Sony and will feature “16-in-1” technology. Huawei is rumoured to put the “Quad Quad Bayer” sensor and it will do 4-in-1 conversions to reach the 16-in-1 stage. This will only be used for videos and photos shot under very dark conditions. Huawei P40 Pro is tipped to come with a 10x optical zoom camera. For this, the company is said to use a dual prism design (current periscope cams have only one prism).

Previous leaks have suggested that the Huawei P40 Pro may feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display that will be curved on all four sides. It could be powered by the Kirin 990 5G chipset. The smartphone may offer a 12GB RAM variant as well. It is expected to come in colour options such as Black, Blush Gold, Silver Frost, Deep Sea Blue and Ice White.
