The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection drops June 5

The Command & Conquer games defined the RTS genre when they first dropped back in 1995. There's good news for veteran PC gamers, the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is making its way to Steam and Origin this June 5th.

For those of you worried about a repeat of Warcraft 3 Reforged, it looks like developer Petroglyph Games have worked very closely with the community on this one to make sure everyone's happy with the overhauls of the original classics.

The 25-year old games will have all new graphics, with 4K support and even the original soundtrack is being remastered by the original composer, Frank Klepacki. The gameplay has for the most part remained untouched, but they have made a few additions and QoL changes such a different UI, easier controls and the addition of a map-editor.

Many of the major decisions to change core features of the game were done after taking inputs from the community. One such feature was the changing of the game's sidebar UI. Lead Producer Jim Vessella talks about how they were worried about changing the game's sidebar too much, to the point where it would hamper the "nostalgia factor" of the game, but community feedback allowed them to go ahead with the changes.

The various phases of the remaster's development have been presented to a "community council", who would give feedback on the stages of development and the new features implemented. They would only move forward when the majority of the council and dev team were onboard with the changes.

The Command & Conquer Remastered Collection will come with the original game and Red Alert, the Covert Ops, Counterstrike, and Aftermatch expansions and more bonus content. There's no news yet on mod support, however, Vesella has said that it's one of the most required features.

Pixel 4a leaks in live hands-on video, reveals a punch-hole display, single rear camera and more

Following last year, Google is expected to unveil a lighter variant of its 2019 flagship this year. Recently, the handset appeared online, giving us our first real-life glimpse of 2020’s mid-range offering from the company. Now, a live hands-on video has leaked on YouTube. The video showcases the phone from the front and back as well as confirms some of the specifications.

The video uploaded on YouTube is in Spanish. However, YouTube’s auto-generated and auto-translated subtitles are pretty good. It reveals that the Pixel 4a will feature a 5.81-inch display with a 1080 x 2340 pixel resolution. It will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset. However, there’s no 90Hz refresh rate here. The phone is likely to pack a 3080mAh battery.

On the front lies a selfie shooter housed in a punch-hole notch. It means there will be no Soli chip housed in the head. Hence, it is likely to launch in India as well. Moreover, no Soli chip means better battery life. As previously mentioned, Pixel 4a shares the same design stylings as the Pixel 4 but lacks a glass shade. There's also a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel.

Previously, Pixel 4a was seen sporting a punch-hole screen with a thin outline of bezels on all sides of the display. The White Google Pixel 4a features an orange coloured power button in the renders. On the other hand, the Black model comes with a white power button. The volume rocker is situated on the right edge of the screen, and the bottom edge houses the USB Type-C port and the speaker grille. Moreover, a 3.5mm audio jack is seen on the top edge.

You can watch the Pixel 4a hands-on video here.

Intel 12th Gen chips could leverage Lakefield architecture, beat AMD: Report

Fresh off the CES 2019 boat, we reported early last year that Intel was working on a new chip-stacking architecture called Lakefield along with the 10th Gen Comet Lake-S desktop CPUs. While Intel has yet to deliver the latter, it has been working on its proprietary Lakefield architecture in an attempt to bring ‘big’ and ‘little’ CPU cores together in the same stack, the same way ARM has with its big.LITTLE architecture. According to a recent report by TechRadar, this new project could give Intel an upper hand over AMD in its 12th Gen CPU line-up.

Intel Lakefield is a hybrid architecture that pairs one ‘big’ performance-oriented 10-nanometre Sunny Cove core with four ‘little’ efficiency-oriented 10-nanometre Atom cores in order to achieve a finer balance between performance and power efficiency, the same way many mobile processors on smartphones currently do. Lakefield was originally planned for use in ultra-low power designs but Intel will reportedly use it in its upcoming Alder Lake-S desktop CPUs.

Citing PTT and Videocardz as its sources, the report suggests Intel could bring the Lakefield architecture to its 12th Gen CPU line-up and topple competitor AMD, which announced its Ryzen 4000 H-series processors for laptops earlier this year. The report goes on to say that Alder Lake-S could consist of three configurations, two of which are 8+8+1 (8 ‘big’ cores, 8 ‘little’ cores, and 1 integrated GPU) configurations of 125W and 80W TDP. The last one could be a more affordable 6+0+1 (6 ‘big’ cores, no ‘little’ cores, and 1 integrated GPU) configuration.

Though Intel has yet to introduce officially the 10th Gen Comet Lake-S desktop CPUs that it unveiled at CES 2019, they were recently spotted in a leaked Dell PC ad. The new CPUs are expected to make their way to Dell’s 2020 XPS Tower and XPS Tower Special Edition desktops. The most sophisticated model in the 10th Gen Comet Lake-S desktop CPU series is expected to be the Core i9-10900K, which features 10 cores and a max turbo clock speed of around 5GHz.

Vivo NEX 3S 5G goes official in China with incremental hardware upgrades

Vivo has taken the wraps off the NEX 3S 5G, the flagship follow-up to the NEX 3 that came out last year. As the name suggests, the NEX 3S 5G is an incremental upgrade over the predecessor and now rocks 5G support. The phone keeps the design similar to the NEX 3 but brings the latest hardware under the hood. There’s the Snapdragon 865 SoC with the integrated 5G modem, LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, the most obvious hardware combination that gives flagship phones their name.

Moreover, the NEX 3 retains the waterfall AMOLED display that curves sharply in the edges along with on-screen haptic controls replacing the volume rockers and the power buttons. The display now comes with HDR10+ certification, an improvement over the predecessor. The display stretches all the way to the edges without a notch or any other interruption with the front camera tucked into a pop-up module. Vivo claimed an impressive 99.6% screen-to-body ratio. Also, surprisingly the NEX 3S 5G comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The NEX 3S 5G boasts of a triple camera setup at the back while the pop-up module houses a 16MP with an f/2.0 aperture. At the back, the primary camera has a 64MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture which relies on pixel-binning to output 16MP photos. Additionally, there’s another 13MP wide-angle camera and another 13MP telephoto lens with up to 20x digital zoom.

The phone is powered by a 4,500mAh battery that supports Vivo’s proprietary 44W fast charging. The phone runs on Android 10-based FunTouchOS 10.

Flagships smartphones also command premium prices and the NEX 3S 5G is no different. The handset is only available in China starting CNY 4,988 (roughly Rs 50,000) for the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant while the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage is priced CNY 5,298 (roughly Rs 53,000). Vivo is offering three colour variants — Sky Blue, Black and Orange.

Sales start from March 14 in China. As of now, there’s no word whether the device will launch in India.
