Philips launches Dolby Atmos enabled Soundbar priced at Rs 31,990

Philips has launched a new Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar with the model number TAPB603. It will be available online and offline for Rs 31,990 starting in March 2020. The Philips Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar comes with a 3.1 channel setup and boasts of 320 W output. The three channels claim to reproduce height as well as depth, “creating a virtual 3D surround sound perfect for an ideal cinematic setup”. How this works is something we will tell you when we get the soundbar in for testing.  For connectivity, the soundbar brings with it HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) along with two HDMI inputs with 4K pass-through. It also has audio-in and optical inputs, along with Bluetooth.

Commenting on the availability of the soundbar, Mr. Jonce Lin, Country Head, Philips Branded Television, Audio and Monitors, TPV Technology India Pvt. Ltd. said, “Nowadays, the soundbars are a must-have gadget that are designed to enhance the viewing experience for all audiophiles and cinephiles. Consumers will now be able to enjoy thrilling moments with the feature-loaded TAPB603. With a sleek design and Dolby Atmos, consumers are in for a treat at a reasonable cost.”

Since the soundbar boasts of Dolby Atmos support, it will be interesting to see how it performs, especially considering the fact that it does not have surround speakers or up-firing speakers. We have reviewed the Sony HT-Z9F, a premium Dolby Atmos-enabled soundbar and that soundbar can be upgraded using rear wireless satellite speakers. It, however, does not have upward-firing drivers and simulates the height channels to give you a Dolby Atmos effect. You can read our review of the Sony HT-Z9F here.

At the same Rs 30,000 price point we have seen the launch of the Yamaha YAS-209. The soundbar does not support Dolby Atmos but brings with it support for DTS Virtual X, a sound technology that competes with Dolby Atmos. It has 200 W of output and comes with a wireless subwoofer. It also comes with the Alexa assistant built-in and comes with 1 4K HDR-enabled passthrough port in addition to ARC connectivity. It also supports optical and Bluetooth connectivity. You can read more about the YAS 209 here.
