Microsoft launches a new Coronavirus tracker via Bing

Microsoft recently launched a new interactive map which tracks the spread of the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 across the world. Launched through Microsoft Bing, this Live Dashboard can be found at bing.com/covid. The map intricately details the number of cases per country and then further breaks it down into three categories - Active Cases, Recovered Cases and Fatal Cases. The tracker also provides an array of related news articles and videos for each individual country; or state (in the case of the US). Verge, however, noted that the news stories being displayed for every country aren't usually very timely since many of them link to rather outdated news stories.

The site also mentions that it collates the information from a couple of sources such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), World Health Organisation (WHO) and Wikipedia. The site uses a heat map, in the form of red circles, to relay the degree of COVID-19 spread across the globe. Simply hovering your mouse over a country will bring up the numbers of currently infected, cured and fatal cases. The dashboard works on PCs, tablets and mobile phones.

The user interface and design look quite similar to the abundance of novel coronavirus trackers found online these days. It is simple and quite user-friendly across commonly-used platforms. Google, on the other hand, also recently launched a website called Project Baseline, built by Verily, which also aims to inform and educate people about the novel coronavirus or COVID-19.

Google Maps is now testing Live View, an AR-based feature, on the app

Google just completed its 15th year anniversary last year and to commemorate that event, the company introduced Live View AR navigation on Google Maps. The feature allowed users to be guided to a location using the phone’s camera and AR technology. And, although the feature is a little hard to find, Google is now testing an option that makes it easier to see on the app. So now, as soon as you search for a specific location, a floating action button will pop up right in front. Clicking on this button will display the distance and direction you need to head in, with the final destination marked using a floating pin.

This feature will change the way we navigate when walking. Google Maps is pretty precise when it comes to vehicles and bikes but falls woefully short when it comes to on-foot navigation. But, worry not as Live View will now essentially help you navigate to exactly where you need to get to. Once you open the app the Live View button appears at the bottom right corner of the app as soon as you search for a particular location. Clicking on the button opens up a reworked version of the camera UI. The camera then shows you a floating pin that directs you to move in a particular direction. Remember that you need to keep your camera pointed at your surroundings for the feature to activate.

The feature will also let you know if you’re moving in the wrong direction. According to Google, the feature offers incredibly accurate results in cities and such. But, we will have to test the feature out in the labyrinthine streets of India to see if it can actually do what it says it does.
