Xiaomi gives up on making smartphone processors

After working on it for more than three years, Xiaomi has reportedly abandoned its work on developing custom chips for its devices. The company did unveil the Surge S1 chipset back in 2017 and there were talks of a Surge S2 SoC getting announced at MWC 2018, but that never happened. There were even talks of working closely with TSMC to develop and manufacture chips but nothing much came out of that.

Now, it seems Xiaomi has given up on its plans on making custom SoCs to power smartphones like Samsung and Huawei. In 2019, Xiaomi did spin off the chipset division from making smartphone chips to making AI hardware for IoT devices.

In 2020, it’s par for another course correction. According to a report by Gizmochina citing an industry insider, Xiaomi is now focusing efforts in making low-power Bluetooth and other RF chips along with peripheral components. The aim is to maintain a competitive BOM cost and stay profitable. The insider noted that this is different from Huawei’s strategy of focusing heavily on its chipsets business.

In the past few years, Xiaomi has invested heavily in a host of chipset companies. It acquired stakes in Hypower Electronics, a fast-charging chip maker while earlier this year, the company made investments in two more chipset manufacturers along with a chip design firm, Verisilicon.

The only smartphone chip that came out as a result of Xiaomi’s efforts is the Surge S1. The chipset did not receive a very good response. It was a basic 28nm SoC with off-the-shelf ARM cores including eight Cortex A53 cores and a quad-core Mali-T860 GPU. The Mi 5c was the only smartphone to be powered by the chipset. There were rumours that the Mi 6c will be launched featuring the Surge S2 chip, but that never transpired. Now by the looks of it, we may never again see a custom smartphone SoC made by Xiaomi.

Reliance Jio 4G Data Packs now offer double data and FUP Minutes to non-Jio numbers

If you are a Reliance Jio customer, then there is good news for you. The telecom giant has revised its existing 4G data vouchers to offer double the data and FUP (Fair Usage Policy) minutes to non-Jio numbers. The 4G packs that have been revised are the Rs 11, Rs 21, Rs 51 and Rs 101 packs. The only plan that remains unchanged is the Rs 251 pack. Before the revision, it made little sense for one to recharge with the 4G data voucher. With the implementation of Interconnect Usage Charge or IUC, Jio customers that wanted to make calls to non-Jio phones had to recharge with an IUC pack. A Jio customer who recharged with a Rs 10 IUC pack got 1GB data free, eliminating the need for a 4G data pack. With the new revision in the plans, users not only get double the data than before but also get FUP minutes to non-Jio numbers. The details of the revised plans are as follows.

With the Rs 11 plan, users get 800 MB of data along with 75 Minutes Jio to Non-Jio calling.  With the Rs 21 plan, users get 2 GB of data along with 200 Minutes Jio to Non-Jio calling. With the Rs 51 plan, users get 6 GB of data along with 500 Minutes Jio to Non-Jio calling. With the Rs 101 plan, users get 12 GB of data along with 1000 Minutes Jio to Non-Jio calling. The validity of the above recharges is as per your existing plan.

The only plan which remains unchanged is the Rs 251 plan which gives users 102GB of data limited to 2GB per day with a validity of 51 days. Also, note that these prepaid 4G data voucher prices are inclusive of taxes.

Users must be aware that after the FUP limit is reached, they will need to recharge with an IUC plan to make calls to non-Jio numbers. According to the terms and conditions, “Voice is free for all Jio to Jio and Jio to Landline calls. You need to opt for IUC Top-up vouchers for making calls to Non-Jio mobiles. For every Rs 10 spent on off-net mobile voice calls, additional complimentary 1 GB data will be credited to customer account”. Another thing to note in the terms and conditions is that “Unlimited SMS referred in the plan benefits will be capped at 100 free SMS per day in compliance with TRAI Regulations”.

Reliance Jio customers also get the benefit of consuming content via JioTV from the comfort of their devices. BSNL has recently launched the BSNL TV app offering OTT content to its prepaid customers only. If you are a BSNL prepaid user, you can check out the details of BSNL TV here.

Xiaomi Mi A3 halts Android 10 rollout for the second time

The Xiaomi Mi A3 is an Android One certified smartphone. That means it not only runs on a vanilla variant of Android, or stock Android, it’s also sold with a promise of two iterative Android updates in its life time. The Mi A3 shipped with Android 9 out of the box but getting the Android 10 update has been quite a ride for users.

After initially being delayed for a long time, when Xiaomi did push out the update to Android 10, it was riddled with bugs that affected the performance of the smartphone to a great extent. It was halted after users complained of issues post the update. Bugs included the in-display fingerprint sensor not working, issues with font sizes and some other bugs.

Now, Xiaomi once again started rolling out the Android 10 update but almost like clockwork, it had to be halted again for the second time. Users have reached out to Xiaomi’s support staff which confirmed the rollout has indeed been paused.

Mi A3 users reported on social media that the Mi A3 Android 10 rollout had resumed again. But at the same time, users also reported they could see the update in the Settings app but couldn’t initiate it. The update changelog mentioned the file is 1.3GB in size and includes Android 10 with dark mode support, privacy controls and more. No reason has been given why the rollout was paused.

The previous set of users who had downloaded the update during the first rollout was issues another 30MB update to fix the bugs. That also included the March 2020 security patch which is included in the present update as well.

If the Mi A3 can be held as an example, Google’s Android One programme hasn’t been able to deliver on all its promises. You do get a no-frills vanilla Android interface, but the promise of fast and secure update policy has been left unfulfilled months after Android 10 hit the Pixel phones. In contrast, HMD Global’s Nokia phones which also run on the Android One programme has been receiving regular updates with most of its 2019 portfolio now running on Android 10. So, the issue may not be with the programme itself, but Xiaomi in this case.
