Google Doodle honours Dr Ignaz Semmelweis who first discovered the benefits of hand-washing

With the world going through a difficult time because of the Covid-19 virus, it's hard to remember that there are people working their butts off trying to keep us safe. And one of the most important steps to staying safe is to just wash our hands. Google has just released a commemorative doodle honouring the man who discovered the benefits of washing your hands, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis. Dr. Semmelweis was the first person to tell the entire world about the pros and advantages of washing our hands.

Born in 1818 in Hungary, Semmelweis discovered that simply washing your hands with disinfectant could cut down the infection rate of puerperal fever. But, as it is with most discoveries, he was chastised due to the lack of evidence. He also discovered that patients who were not washing their hands were transmitting the disease to people who they had brief physical contact with. After a full-fledged investigation, Semmelweis asked doctors to wash their hands before interacting with patients. This led to a drastic reduction of infection in patients and with that his point was proved. Years later, this process of basically washing your hands was known as ‘germ theory of disease”.

With Covid-19 tearing thorough the modern world like a buzzsaw, it’s time we paid homage to the doctors and scientists who figured out the best hygienic practices to avoid being infected. Let us honour the man who taught us that washing our hands was a great way to prevent the spread of various diseases.

Kids reportedly review-bombing apps like Zoom to get them booted off the Play Store

With most of the world practising a form of isolation or quarantine due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 Coronavirus, many schools have turned to using video conferencing apps to ensure children still attend classes and continue their education. However, with children being children, these naughty little blokes have found a way to mess with that too. Most schools and educational institutions have turned to using Zoom, a teleconferencing app that allows for 100 people to be a part of a call. According to a report by Android Police, the app has since been bombarded with 1-star ratings, dropping its average rating to 2.4. However, it appears to be that there has been a lot of moderation from Google’s end as the app is now rated at 3.6. It seems like a whole bunch of kids decided to bombard the app with 1-star reviews in an attempt to get the app blocked from the Play Store.

As it turns out, Zoom isn’t the only app to get such a treatment. Google’s own Classroom app is also at the receiving end of 1-star reviews. This has seen the app’s rating drop down to 2.0 at the time of writing. Of course, this isn’t the only such news that’s coming in. Earlier this month, when most of China went under quarantine, Chinese students review-bombed the DingTalk app in much the same way. A feat that went viral and it is possible that other children were inspired by it.

Of course, it is also possible that some of the poor reviews are genuine. With the sudden surge in demand, there is a chance that these apps haven’t been able to scale up as quickly and as such, their service quality has declined.

Of course, a majority of the 1-star reviews do seem to be kids, ensuring that they get to ‘skip school’ and do whatever it is that kids like to do these days.

Google launches Camera Go app as Android Go devices pass the 100 million mark

Google says that Android Go devices have crossed the 100 million mark. According to Google, “There are more than 3.5 billion people who use smartphones, but that’s only 45 percent of the world’s population. We created Android (Go edition) to bring more affordable, high-quality smartphones to people around the world. Thanks to our partners who have made more than 1,600 device models available in 180+ countries, there are now more than 100 million active Android (Go edition) devices around the world. Here are some updates on Go edition’s progress and where we’re going next.” Android Go is aimed to run on low-end hardware giving people looking for a budget smartphone a smooth Android experience.

Looking to improve the performance of these low-end devices, Google has also announced the Camera Go app. According to Google, since the launch of Android Go, one of the most requested features was an improvement to the camera app. The new Camera Go app aims to help people click photos without worrying about speed or storage. It sports a Portrait Mode to give photos a bokeh effect. We have seen Google achieve this with a single camera when they launched the Pixel 3 and it is nice to see the technique trickle down to the Android Go family of smartphones. How well it will work is something we will tell you when we get a device in for review.

The Camera Go app is built for people using smartphones for the first time. Because of this, it brings with it a clean and simple interface. According to Google, “Camera Go tracks how much photo and video storage space you have left, and then it helps you clear up space so you never miss a shot”. This is an essential feature as budget smartphones like the Android Go devices come with limited storage that can fill up pretty fast.

Google says that the Camera Go will be available on the Nokia 1.3 and more Android (Go edition) devices soon. Speaking of the Nokia 1.3, it is an Android Go device sporting the Camera Go app. Coming to other specifications of the smartphone, the Nokia 1.3 features a  5.71-inch display with a notch. It sports a 19:9 aspect ratio with a 1570 x 720 pixel resolution. The company claims its brightness can go up to 400 nits. Under the hood, it is powered by the Qualcomm 215 Mobile Platform. It has 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 16GB of e-MMC 5.1 storage. The storage is expandable via a microSD card up to 400GB. The phone is a single SIM device.

Moving to the optics, it has an 8MP camera at the back with an LED flash. On the front, there is a 5MP selfie shooter. The Google Go camera app on the device brings features like AI low light enhancement, HDR and Portrait. A 3000mAh battery with support for 5W charging powers the entire package. The smartphone is available in Cyan, Charcoal, and Sand colors. You can read more about the Nokia 8.3 5G, Nokia 5.3 and Nokia 1.3 here.
