Indian government reportedly working on CoWin-20 app to track Covid-19 patients: Report

The Indian government is reportedly working on a smartphone app to keep the spread of coronavirus under check. The app is called CoWin-20 and is currently in beta testing before launching for both iOS and Android devices.

According to a report by Network18, the CoWin-20 app will rely on smartphone location services to track people and stop the spread of coronavirus. The app will also reportedly record the user’s travel history to determine if they’re at risk of catching the virus as well as the people they might have come in contact with.

The app will also highlight coronavirus testing centres nearby and quarantine sites. You can get the latest advisories, guidelines and information about the Covid-19 outbreak. Users will also be alerted on the latest updates via the Indian government.

The inspiration behind using an app to track potential patients infected with the virus might have come from a similar app being in Singapore where the government is also relying on high-tech surveillance to keep the coronavirus spread under check. Apart from also locating patients who tested positive on a map, it also alerts nearby people who may come in contact with the patient by using Bluetooth.

The report claims the app will be launched in the next few days. The APK of the app is reportedly being distributed to a select few people. iOS users can also download the app by sharing their devices UDIDs with the National Informatics Center.

Recently, the Indian Government also launched a “MyGov Corona” help desk on WhatsApp which is basically a chatbot that will help you out with potential symptoms, guidelines and advisories on WhatsApp itself.

Coronavirus effect: Instagram lets friends browse together when video chatting thanks to the new co-watching feature

Instagram is a content consumption platform where users can watch photos, videos, and memes and share them with friends. However, with the entire nation in lockdown for 21-days, Instagram has come up with a way to engage you while letting you interact with your friends. The feature is called Co-Watching. It lets friends on a video chat browse through a feed together. The feed contains posts which one user has Liked or Saved. It will also show posts that Instagram recommends.

With the new feature, friends can scroll through posts, discuss them or simply have a laugh and come up with a new way of engaging on the platform. This could lead to people spending more time on the platform, which works well in its favour.

According to the Instagram blog, “To help people stay connected, we’ve launched media sharing, a new feature that allows you to view Instagram posts together with your friends over video chat. You can start a video chat by tapping the video chat icon in the Direct inbox or in an existing Direct thread, then view saved, liked and suggested photos/videos by tapping the photo icon in the bottom left corner in an ongoing video chat.”

In addition, Instagram has also launched a “Stay Home” sticker. According to the social networking platform, “Any accounts you follow who use the sticker will be added to a shared Instagram story, allowing you to see how others are practising social distancing at this time”.

Instagram has also launched new stickers to help people share accurate COVID-19 information in Stories. Instagram says that “These new features include reminders to wash your hands, distance yourself from others and more. These will be available in the camera in the coming days.”

Huawei Kirin 820 5G chipset benchmarked, outperforms Snapdragon 765G, 855 and Kirin 980 SoCs

Huawei’s Kirin 820 5G chipset is all set to debut with the Honor 30s on March 30. The SoC has popped up online quite a few times. This time around, it has appeared on benchmarking sites. In two separate developments, it has outperformed the flagship chipsets like Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and Huawei’s own Kirin 980. While in another benchmark it has beaten Snapdragon 765G SoC.

Based on its Geekbench 4 scores, the Kirin 820 5G can outperform the Snapdragon 855 in single-core tests. It also beats the Kirin 980 in both single-thread and multi-thread performance. It is possibly due to its main Cortex-A76 cores being clocked higher. The Kirin 820 5G is also tipped to boast improved ISP and NPU, at least compared to the Kirin 810, and ARM's brand new G77 GPU.

On the other hand, the Kirin 820 5G has also visited the AnTuTu benchmark listing. It scored  375270 points on AnTuTu, out of which the CPU score is 130080, the GPU score is 116516, the MEM score is 66886, and the UX score is 61788. It beats Redmi K30 5G equipped with Snapdragon 765G and HUAWEI nova 6 SE equipped with Kirin 810 and is slightly behind the Honor V20 powered with Kirin 980. The compared results are from Antutu Android February 2020 Phone performance list.

According to AnTuTu listing, HONOR 30S with the model number CDY-AN90 runs Android 10 and the phone has 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The Kirin 820 is an Octa-Core SoC with four bigger Cortex-A76 cores and four smaller Cortex-A55, with a maximum clock speed of 2.36GHz and has Mali-G57 GPU, but the clock speed and the number of cores for the GPU are unknown.

Apple iPhone 12 to come with sensor-shift image stabilisation

Apple Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released another investment note to his investors, in which he reveals a big feature coming to the next generation of iPhones. According to the note, the next generation of iPhones could come with sensor-shift-based image stabilization. If this ends up being true, it could mean some significant improvements to the camera are on their way.

The investor note states that Apple could move to sensor-shift based image stabilization, utilizing a 5-axis system for the same. Sensor-shift based stabilization is superior to optical-based systems in several ways, the most important being their ability to compensate for vibrations in 5 axes, while OIS can only handle two. This makes sensor-shift based stabilization better suited especially for video, and given that the iPhone has a long-standing reputation for being an excellent video camera, this would make perfect sense. Sensor-based stabilization also means that it would give Apple room to further shrink the element stack, but it appears that they may instead utilize the space. According to the note, Apple will use a 7p lens for the next iPhone. Currently, the lens on an iPhone camera is comprised of 6 elements (hence 6P) and a bump up to 7 could help the company achieve better flare control, suppression of internal reflections and also control chromatic aberrations. It will all, however, depend on the kind of glass used.

Besides this, the iPhone could finally get a large sensor, one measuring 1/1.9 inches diagonally. This could very likely be a 48 or 64-megapixel sensor, but it would really be quite something if Apple stuck to a native 12-megapixel resolution for the large format sensor. Lastly, it is also expected that Apple might add a 3D Time of Flight sensor to the main camera module on the back of the iPhone 12 series of smartphones.
