Huawei launches P40 series with major camera updates and a quad-curve display

Despite the Coronavirus shutdown and the trade ban by the U.S., Huawei has gone ahead and announced the P40 series of smartphones. The series includes three phones, the Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro+. As always, the camera remains the primary driving force behind the P40 series, but this time around, there’s more than just the cameras to lure potential customers.

All three Huawei P40 series smartphones are powered by the Kirin 990 5G chipset and Huawei has clarified that there will be no 4G version of the phones. All three smartphones also come with 8GB RAM, although they do offer varying amounts of onboard UFS 3.0 storage. All three phones still don’t come with a microSD card slot, instead, you get Huawei’s proprietary nano memory card slot, which takes up one of the SIM card slots.

Huawei P40 series

The main highlight of the Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ is the impressive camera stack. The P40 offers a triple camera setup, while the P40 Pro comes with quad cameras and the P40 Pro+ comes with 5 cameras. If you thought this was overkill, just continue reading their specs. All three smartphones come with a 50-megapixel primary camera featuring an RYYB sensor and an aperture of f/1.9. The telephoto camera on the P40 is an 8-megapixel shooter offering 3x optical zoom (80mm) and an aperture of f/2.4. The third camera is an ultra-wide shooter (17mm) with a 16-megapixel sensor and an aperture of f/2.2. The Huawei P40 Pro steps things up a bit with a 40-megapixel sensor for the ultra-wide lens (18mm) with a massive f/1.8 aperture. The telephoto camera comes with a 12-megapixel RYYB sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens with an aperture of f/3.4. This is the same configuration from the older P30 Pro, except, the sensor here is an RYYB sensor instead of an RGGB sensor., the fourth camera on the P40 Pro is a depth-sensing Time of Flight camera. The Huawei P40 Pro+ is where overkill steps in. The ultra-wide- and wide-angle cameras remain the same as on the P40 Pro, but the P40 Pro+ gets two telephoto lenses instead of just one. There’s a 3x telephoto lens (80mm) with an aperture of f/2.4 and a 10x periscope style optical zoom telephoto lens with an aperture of f/4.4. Both the lenses are paired with their own respective 8-megapixel RGGB sensors. The fifth camera here is again a Time of Flight sensor. All the camera specs are summarized in the table below. On the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+, the ultra-wide camera sports a 40-megapixel sensor measuring 1/1.54 inches diagonally, which Huawei says is capable of binning 16 pixels into 1 for an effective 4.48μm pixel pitch. This, however, is only limited to the video mode.

Besides the cameras, the P40 series seems to be getting a major upgrade in the display department as well. All three phones come with what Huawei calls Quad-Curve Overflow Display. Huawei likens the curvature of the screen to that of water that’s formed a curve on the edge of an overflowing cup. Design philosophies aside, the P40 comes with a 6.1-inch 60Hz display, the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro+ come with a 6.58-inch 90Hz display. The resolution also differs across the three phones, with the P40 sporting a 2340x1080 display while the Pro models come with 2640x1200 display. The Pro models also come with IP68 ratings while the P40 loses out on the rating. The P40 sports a 3800mAh battery while the Pro models come with a 4200mAh battery, with the P40 Pro+ also sporting 40W fast wireless charging.

Huawei P40 Pro+ Duo

In terms of colours, the P40 and the P40 Pro come in five colours; Deep Sea Blue, Blue Gold, Silver Frost, Ice White and Black. The P40 Pro+ comes in a ceramic finish, and hence, is only available in white and black. In terms of pricing and availability, the Huawei P40 will start at €799, P40 Pro at €999 and the P40 Pro+ at €1399. All phones go on sale starting April 7 in select markets, India not being one of them.

Call of Duty Mobile Season 4 update now live

As the country goes into what looks like a very long period of lockdown, one of the best ways to not only kill time but also be social with your friends is gaming. Call of Duty Mobile has received the Season 4 update, at a very opportune moment.

The new update brings Call of Duty Mobile into Season 4, adding a number of new aspects to the game, and removing one. As had previously been announced, Zombies will be removed from CoD Mobile at the end of March. Instead, users are getting a new Meltdown Map and new weapons. There are new Industrial Revolution themed rewards for ranked leaderboards, alongside new Premium and Free Battle Pass rewards. The Scrapyard map is temporarily being replaced by the Meltdown map. Additionally, there is a large number of adjustments to weapon mechanics, which is bound to throw off your game a little. There’s also an improved matchmaking algorithm which should prevent players from getting pitted against players with a wildly different skill level. One notable new weapon is the GKS, and SMG with long-range and reliable recoil and stability. A new scorestreak called Shock RC has also been added, which basically detects and disables nearby enemies with an electrical shock. There are also improvements to the UI and general bug fixes, alongside many other changes.

If you’re finding yourself getting stressed due to the lockdown, we have a lovely list of games that will help you and your friends play together, without having to break quarantine. We also have a list of mindfulness apps to help manage the stress and anxiety that can occur due to being locked indoors. For now, we’re sure that the new update to Call of Duty Mobile will definitely keep you busy for some time.

Dells new app lets you mirror your iPhone screen on PC with keyboard and mouse support

While investing all-out in an Apple ecosystem always reaps the best rewards if you are an iPhone user, Dell is here to change that. The latest Dell PCs can now mirror the screen of an iPhone using Dell’s Mobile Connect app.

The latest update to the iOS app brings support for screen mirroring for iPhones, letting you use the keyboard and mouse to control the device. The app also lets users drag and drop photos and videos to transfer between two devices.

Furthermore, the Dell Mobile Connect App will let you send SMS messages without having to keep the iPhone open in front of you. And all this happens wirelessly.

The app was first announced at this year’s CES and aims to bring iPhone support in line with Android on Windows devices from Dell. Notably, screen mirroring for Android devices have been there for a few years now. Yet, there’s still not much parity between the two platforms.

For instance, file transfer is only limited to photos and videos from iPhones for now, while Android devices support music and document transfer as well. Dell also added that Android users can now send MMS messages using the feature.

Dell isn’t the only PC-maker working on letting you Windows devices to control smartphones. Microsoft’s Your Phone app also works similarly, regardless of the manufacturer of the PC. The Your Phone app lets you route calls from your phone to PC and also lets you mirror the screen apart from letting you sync and transfer files.

Huawei also has a similar service that works with its tablets but that’s again locked down to Huawei devices only.

Apple also unveiled the Handoff feature which lets you resume tasks left on your iPhone from you MacBook, opening up interoperability between iPhones, iPads and Macs.

The Dell Mobile Connect will require a Dell PC from 2018 or later while the iPhone needs to be running on iOS 11 or above. So far, Dell has enabled support on its XPS range, Inspiron, Vostro, Alienware and G series devices. The update will roll out in phases over the week.

Apple releases security focused iOS 1246 for older iOS devices, co

Apple just pushed out the hotly anticipated iOS 13.4 and iPadOS 13.4, which is compatible with a staggering number of devices, going back all the way to iPhone SE/iPhone 6s, devices that came out back in 2015. Apple may not be releasing the feature update for devices older than the iPhone 6s, but the company sure hasn’t forgotten them. Alongside iOS 13.4, Apple is also rolling out iOS 12.4.6 for iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and a few other devices.

The update does not include any new features to the older devices but does bring essential security update patches against common vulnerabilities. The iPhone 5s is the oldest device on the compatibility list, having launched in 2013. Security patches for old devices have been a topic of great concern lately, with the rampancy in malware spread increasing rapidly. When it comes to the Android ecosystem, a report recently found that nearly a billion devices have stopped receiving security update patches, leaving them vulnerable to modern-day exploits. Most of the devices comprising this number are more than 3 years old. There’s also the issue of most Android OEMs promising OS updates only for two iterations, anything beyond which is not guaranteed. Apple, on the other hand, has shown that they do care about older devices.

The trend of supporting as many devices as possible started with iOS 12, the first in the long list of iOS updates that tried to be inclusive, rather than exclusionary. When Apple announced iOS 11, it was compatible with all iPhones between the iPhone 5s and iPhone X. iOS 12 at launch did not drop the iPhone 5s from the support list, making it the oldest device to be supported by the OS. The iPhone 5s may not have received iOS 13, but it did receive the latest security patch from Apple.
