Coronavirus effect: Wistron Corp speeding up move of iPhone production out of China to India and Vietnam

With the world turned upside down by the coronavirus, it looks like even some of the biggest companies and manufacturers are facing their fair share of problems. Apple being one of them. One of Apple’s manufacturing partners, Winstrol Corp., has said that half the company's capacity would be located outside China in about a year’s time. The company had already started moving production out of China since the trade war between the US and China reached a boiling point last year. The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has sped up the process.

Other companies such as Foxconn, Inventec Corp., and Pegatron Corp could also end up making decisions that could effectively change the supply chain in the long term. Wistron Corp. is actually looking at India as the next manufacturing hub, as well as looking at Vietnam and Mexico as alternatives. The company has set aside a billion dollars for this particular expansion.

Pegatron is also looking at expanding it’s manufacturing sites to other countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and even India as potential countries. The iPhone assembler also said that it has purchased land in northern Taiwan and intends to set up a plant there as well. Even the mighty Foxconn is looking at diversifying their manufacturing sites as well. The folly of placing all your eggs in one basket is now coming back to bite these companies.

Who knows how the virus will affect the world in the coming years but even in just a few short months, the Coronavirus outbreak has shown us that we are teetering on the edge of civilization.

Coronavirus effect: Google wont play an April Fools Day joke this year

Since 2004, Google has been pranking the world every year with creative jokes, websites and fake product launches keeping us guessing whether the company is serious or joking. After all, the tech giant did launch Gmail on April 1, 2004 offering users 1GB of storage space, a feature unheard of in the past. Before that, between 1998 and 2004, we got the occasional April fools prank here and there. However, the company will not be parking us this year, breaking its 16-year streak and honestly, that makes us very sad. This information comes from an email obtained by Business Insider.

The email reads, “This year, we’re going to take the year off from [April Fools’ Day] out of respect for all those fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Our highest goal right now is to be helpful to people, so let’s save the jokes for next April, which will undoubtedly be a whole lot brighter than this one. We’ve already stopped any centralized April Fools efforts but realize there may be smaller projects within teams that we don’t know about. Please suss out those efforts and make sure your teams pause on any jokes they may have planned — internally or externally.”

Following Google, there were a lot of other companies that took to the internet to make jokes on April Fools day. You can check out the April fools jokes played by companies in 2019 here.
