Realme TV will come with a 43-inch panel, BIS certification reveals

Realme has already declared its intention to go beyond manufacturing just smartphones and enter into lifestyle tech products. That has so far included a few pair of wireless headphones and a fitness band. But the young upstart also plans to launch its own TV in Q2, 2020, and thanks to BIS certification filings, we have some more information regarding the upcoming Realme TV.

According to a leakster, the Realme TV has popped up on the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) website. The filing carries the name “Realme TV 43” with the model number JSC55LSQL. Looking at the name, it’s easy to guess this particular model will come with a 43-inch panel.

That’s not the largest screen we have seen on a Smart TV but it does indicate that Realme will be aiming at the affordable segment. The certification was granted on February 26, 2020. Only one TV model is listed.

Furthermore, the listing reveals the panel on the Realme TV will be an LED panel. Interestingly, searching with the model number on the BIS website also reveals another listing (with the same model number). This one’s labelled Sansui, a Japanese brand that makes audio-video equipment. Both models appear to have been manufactured in the same factory in Guangdong, China.

This is not a confirmation, however, that only one variant of the TV will be launched in India. For now, at least, it’s pretty certain that a 43-inch TV from Realme will land in India. It’s most likely to be powered by Android TV with some customisation done by the company. Considering the listing, the TV is also expected to launch sometime in this quarter.

Airtel users can now recharge their numbers through ATMs, Apollo pharmacies and Big Bazaar stores

As the country heads into the final week of lockdown, companies are still extending a helping hand to people in need. Just last week, we reported that Reliance now allowed users to recharge their Jio number at ATMs. Not to be outdone, Airtel has now announced that it has started allowing its users to do the same but with added options such as pharmacies and grocery stores.

You can recharge your ATM at any HDFC or ICICI ATM as Airtel has partnered up with both banks to allow users to use the service. Airtel has also joined hands with Apollo pharmacies and Big Bazaar stores for the same. There are no details on how all of this will work, but the assumption is that it will function similar to the Reliance Jio scheme. As of now, you can still recharge your number through the Airtel app and other services such as Google Pay and Paytm but this just makes it easier for people who do not have access to those services to still recharge their numbers.

Airtel has said that its network will not face any surge issues and will run smoothly for the duration of the lockdown. As Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal said in a statement, “Our network operating centres and data centres are totally operational to ensure smooth functioning of the network. Our field staff is still on the road to ensure speedy provisioning of new connections and quick fixing of faults. Further, we have advanced investments and have added capacities to meet the surge in data demand.”

Airtel, Jio and others have also released a bunch of plans for people working from home. You can read more about it here. The company has also released a set of personal risk-assessment tools for COVID-19 which you can check out, here.

Apple rewards ethical hacker 75,000 for discovering major flaws with Safari

Finding flaws in upcoming devices or software always comes with some kind of rewards. As such, a hacker who discovered a number of security flaws in Safari was rewarded handsomely for his work. These flaws ould have led to the iPhone camera actually being hacked. Once the flaws were discovered, Apple reward the hacker, Ryan Pickren about $75,000 (Rs 57.3 lakh approx) for figuring out the security flaws. As reported by Forbes, Ryan Pickern is an ethical hacker who broke down Safari and actually discovered around seven issues with the device on Apple’s very own browser. In fact, three of those seven problems could have actually led to the iPhone camera being hacked.

These flaws could have been broken into by hackers who could access the device’s camera and microphone permissions. Ryan Pickren was responsible for finding these issues back in December 2019 and promptly reported the issues to Apple. The San Cupertino company then fixed the issues with the January Safari update and then further patched out further flaws with the 13.0.5 update on Safari and then further improved upon with the March 2020, 13.1 Safari update.

Pickren said, “I really enjoyed working with the Apple product security team when reporting these issues. The new bounty program is absolutely going to help secure products and protect customers. I’m really excited that Apple embraced the help of the security research community.”

So, if you’re some mad genius who breaks down devices, then you should definitely try giving it a shot. Who knows? You could win $75,000 from Apple for your effort.

Redmi Band with heart rate tracking, colour display launched in China

Xiaomi has unveiled a new wearable under its Redmi brand. Called the Redmi Band, the device is currently priced at CNY 95 (approximately Rs 1,000), but that is only an introductory price and will change to CNY 99.

The Redmi Band packs a relatively large 1.08-inch colour OLED display, which is larger than the 0.95-inch display found on the Mi Band 4. Further, the new band does not come with a charging cradle. It uses a standard USB Type-A port to charge. This a system similar to the one used by other fitness trackers like the Lenovo HX03F Spectra. It should be noted that while the Mi band 4 has a slight curve, the Redmi Band is completely flat. The company claims that the device takes about two hours to completely charge, and can be used for 14 days at a stretch,

As far as tracking goes, the device packs an optical heart rate sensor for tracking heart rate. The company notes that the device can track up to five different sports. It also offers sleep tracking. Another notable feature of the device is that it is waterproof up to five ATM, so users can take it swimming with them. The Redmi Band can show notifications and weather forecast. It also supports Alipay offline scanning. It is not yet known if or when the Redmi Band will make its way to India. However, if the company does launch the fitness tracker in India, it should be priced less than the Mi Band 4.

Coronavirus effect: Google Maps now shows you Takeout and Delivery options near your location

As the country is turned inside out because of the Coronavirus pandemic, it’s clear that life has been affected by the spread of the disease. With the 21-day lockdown entering its final week, most people are still stuck at home without any real access to food or essential services. As we previously reported, companies like Reliance and Uber have extended a helping hand to people who are in need. There are even websites that will tell you which grocery store is open nearby. Well, you can now count Google in that list. The tech giant has now included a feature on Google Maps wherein a user can enter his or her location and restaurants that offer takeout or delivery will appear nearby.

As soon as you open up Google Maps, you’ll see an individual Takeout and Delivery button on the top. Clicking either one of these will reveal all the restaurants that either offer Takeout or Delivery nearby. The service also allows you to view the restaurant's menu, what time they’re serving food and even customer reviews for each restaurant. This service is mighty helpful for people who are home alone and do not have the necessary skill to cook their own food. In this day and age, it’s not feasible to be cooking every day either.

As of right now, there is no integration with food delivery services like Swiggy or Zomato or even Uber Eats, but this will make it easier for you to narrow down what exactly you want to eat.

Black Widow gets new release date, Artemis Fowl to come straight to Disney+

The Coronavirus outbreak around the world has thrown practically every industry and the movie industry is no different. With theatres across the world being shuttered, some studios who had films on the brink of releasing, had to push them to an online release. Disney has a number of movies that were to be released this year and there was a lot of uncertainty around that too. Finally, the studio has announced that Artemis Fowl, one of the films to be released this year, will be going straight to Disney+ and not get a theatrical release.

Disney has announced that of all the films slated for release, Artemis Fowl will go straight to Disney+, with the date to be revealed soon. We already saw Disney bring Frozen 2 and Pixar’s Onward to the streaming service ahead of the original plan, given that people are turning to streaming to find respite from being home-bound.

Disney has also announced the reworked calendar for all Marvel films. Black Widow, which was to be the first Marvel film of 2020, set to open the summer, will now be released on November 6 2020. The Eternals, which was supposed to release on November 6, 2020, will now move to February 21, 2021. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings thus moves from its original February date to May 7, 2021. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness shifts from May 2021 to Nov. 5, 2021, and finally, Thor: Love and Thunder is now going to release in 2022. With respect to other Disney films such as Mulan, the movie’s release has now been rescheduled to July 24, 2020.

All these dates are once again subject to the prevalence of the Coronavirus, and whether theatres have opened by that time. Disney and other movie houses have a lot of money invested in their respective films, so it makes sense that they would want to recoup their investment through theatrical release. The Marvel franchise has been a massive cash cow for Disney, so it makes sense why the studio would rather delay the release of Marvel movies instead of putting it out on a digital platform. Even if the movie was behind a paywall, pirates would make sure the movies are available for free within days, causing huge financial loss to the studio.

Facebook allegedly tried to buy Pegasus exploit to spy on iOS users

The very mention of Facebook in today’s times brings up unsettling thoughts. It’s a company that’s built on taking user information and using it through various means to make a profit. Sometimes, the means with which Facebook carries out these activities are questionable, and sometimes, just downright breach of trust. One such attempt was allegedly made by Facebook back in 2017 when they tried to buy the Pegasus spyware from NSO in order to better collect data from the phones of iOS users.

NSO representatives have alleged in a recent court filing that two Facebook representatives approached the security agency with the intent to purchase the Pegasus exploit. For those who are not aware, Pegasus is a tool developed by NSO that can be remotely installed on target iOS devices. Once installed, the iPhone is jailbroken, followed by malware being installed on the device. Then, the malware will collect all the data it can and send the information off to a predetermined person. You may remember Jeff Bezos’ phone being hacked recently through a video received on WhatsApp. That was the Pegasus exploit in action. However, the two Facebook executives wanted to use the exploit in a slightly different manner. According to the filing, they wanted to use the exploit to better gather data from iOS devices since their own solution wasn’t doing a good enough job.

The solution that the filing talks about is the Onavo Protect app that Facebook had launched earlier that year (2017) in the guide of a VPN. It was later discovered that Onavo was not the benevolent VPN app, but instead was being used by Facebook top snoop on what other apps iOS users were using. The court filing reads that “The Facebook representatives also stated that Facebook wanted to use purported capabilities of Pegasus to monitor users on Apple devices and was willing to pay for the ability to monitor Onavo Protect users." NSO claims they did not go ahead with the deal because they only sell the Pegasus exploit to governments and law enforcement agencies tasked with national security, neither of which fit Facebook.

NSO and Facebook are currently entrenched in a legal battle, with the lawsuit being brought by Facebook against NSO. The social media giant has taken NSO to court over the exploitation of a VoIP vulnerability in WhatsApp, that allowed Pegasus to install spyware on iOS and Android devices.
