Nokia 93 PureView launched delayed once again due to supply chain issues, may launch in second half 2020

Nokia had to cancel its MWC 2020 event owing to the coronavirus outbreak that started at the end of January. However, it did host an online stream to announce Nokia 8.3 5G, Nokia 5.3 and the Nokia 1.3, while the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic was brought to life with new features. The Nokia 8.3 5G was even revealed as the smartphone James Bond will be using in the upcoming “No Time to Die” movie set to premiere later this year. However, curiously missing from the lineup was the Nokia 9.3 PureView, the hallowed successor to Nokia’s experimental Nokia 9 PureView.

Now, a new report from Nokiapoweruser states that HMD Global will be delaying the launch of the Nokia 9.3 PureView to the second half of 2020, citing supply chain issues arising because of the pandemic.

HMD Global was reportedly planning to launch the flagship smartphone during MWC 2020 but since the event was cancelled, it had to be postponed for a later date. By the looks of it, that date came and passed with Nokia announcing the rest of the lineup while the Nokia 9.3 PureView got yet another date for the launch.

Previous reports state that this is going to be Nokia’s flagship in 2020. The Nokia 8.3 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 765 which while it does ensure 5G connectivity, it is still not a flagship performer. The Nokia 9.3 PureView is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC.

Nothing other than this is currently known about the Nokia 9.3 PureView. However, going by the name, it’s likely to pack an impressive camera setup. To recall, the Nokia 9 PureView came with a penta-camera setup from Zeiss optics which fired all at once to capture a lot of image data that Nokia claimed goes to improve the image quality to a greater extent.

However, the phone came with ageing hardware under the hood and a late launch in India meant it never saw much success in the country. The phone also received a price hike recently owing to the rise in GST rates for mobile phones in India. The Nokia 9 PureView is now retailing at Rs 52,677, an increase of Rs 2,678.

Huawei Smart TV X65 tipped to offer OLED panel, 24MP pop-up camera, and Hongmeng OS: Report

It looks like Huawei may soon offer an OLED TV. According to a report by My Drivers, the company may be planning to release a 65-inch smart TV with an OLED panel. Called the Huawei Smart TV X65, the TV is touted to offer a range of additional features like cameras and sensors that are aimed at improving user experience.

As per the report, the TV will feature a 24MP pop-up camera that is mounted just above the display panel. This should help with video chatting. It is also said to pack an ambient light sensor that should help adjust the picture quality as per the ambient lighting in the room. Of course, the TV will not come with Android TV due to the restrictions placed on Huawei by the United States, so it is touted to come with the company’s own Hongmeng OS. The TV is also touted as offering a way to control the TV without voice or remote control. Speculation suggests that this could be a form of gesture controls.

Another impressive feature that the Huawei Smart TV X65 is touted to come with is a 14 speaker setup that is said to be located under the screen. The report notes that it will come with a calibration process that will feel out the room’s soundscape and then create a profile for surround sound audio. The TV is expected to be unveiled on 8 April, so expect more information then.

While OLED panels have become quite common among smartphones, the tech is still pretty niche when it comes to TVs. Currently, only a few manufacturers like Sony and LG offer TVs with OLED panels, that too in their premium offerings. Others, like Samsung, are sticking with QLED panels. At least for now.

An Opensignal report claims Airtel is the best 4G network for video consumption and gaming while Vodafone is best for content creators

With the lockdown underway to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus epidemic, a big chunk of the population are staying home for work, play and video consumption, putting the onus on mobile network providers to ensure a smooth experience. We already saw major video streaming apps like YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime cutting down on video quality on smartphones to accommodate the surge in usage.

The April 2020 report from the independent mobile network analytics company OpenSignal reveals the positive impact of the ongoing consolidation among telcos. The report reveals the best mobile network to be on right now is Airtel which offers the best download speeds, video streaming and voice calls.

OpenSignal uses proprietary calculations to quantify mobile network experiences.

Airtel has been adding the most number of broadband mobile towers than any other operator in the last quarter overtaking Vodafone in the process. This was done to compete more with Reliance Jio in the rural areas, and the results are now showing in improved network experience.

Video streaming

The Opensignal report claims users enjoy the best video experience on Airtel’s network. The operator won the same award in the last report as well, but this time Opensignal upgraded Airtel’s ratings from Fair to Good.

Vodafone also joined Airtel in the Good rating category, making it the highest increase seen by the analysts. Users on both Airtel and Vodafone get faster video loading times, lesser buffering during playback while streaming videos on their smartphones using mobile data.

Jio and Idea come next. Both of them are in the Fair rating category, which is characterised by sluggish video load times, frequent buffering especially on higher resolutions.

BSNL which only offers 3G connectivity has been rated Poor once again.

App-based voice Calls

App-based voice calls saw toe-to-toe competition between the four key players. But here too, Airtel was ahead of the pack and won the award. Airtel went from a Poor rating to Acceptable in the time period, overtaking Vodafone to take up the first place. An Acceptable rating is awarded by the analyst firm if the users are satisfied and are generally able to understand what the person on the other end is saying.

Jio, Idea and Vodafone remained in the Poor category where according to the report, users experience frequent distortion, clicking sounds and silence during the call.

App-based calls include calls over Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook and other OTT services.

Download speeds

Airtel also offers the highest download speeds according to the report. And it has a significant lead over its rivals with an increase of half a megabit in download speeds. Vodafone and Idea saw the highest growth of 1.5Mbps to 9.5Mbps and 9.2Mbps respectively. Going by the trend, Airtel may not be able to hold its lead for much longer.

Jio was quite far behind according to Opensignal with an average download speed of 7.3Mbps. BSNL took the last spot with 2.9MBps on its 3G-only network.

Upload speeds

As for upload speeds, Vodafone is the best network. It received an overall upload speed experience of 3.9Mbps which was significantly faster than the rest, with a 24% lead over Airtel. The report states Vodafone’s upload speeds are 42% faster than Reliance Jio and three times faster than BSNL’s.

Latency

On the other hand, Airtel showed the lowest latencies among the three. The average response time on Airtel was 54.1 milliseconds, while the previous winner Jio trailed closely behind at 56.3ms, showing a 2.1ms decline. Vodafone users saw the highest improvement as the consolidated infrastructure from the merger helped iron out network stress. It posted an improvement of 3.6ms to have an average response time of 60.6ms.

Overall 4G availability

Despite a slower download speed and lower latencies, Jio still dominates the 4G landscape in India. Opensignal’s quantification revealed the company is well ahead of its rivals, but all three of its key rivals are closing the gap quickly.

Vodafone Idea users can recharge their prepaid numbers at ATMs

The entire nation is in lockdown due to the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak and telcos are working to find different ways in which users can recharge their smartphones. Once a user's validity or data pack is over, he/she cannot resort to apps like PayTM, Amazon Pay and more to recharge the number. Traditionally, the user would visit a store and purchase a top-up, but since the nation is in a lockdown, it is difficult to find stores where this is possible. Since ATM services are working, users can go to an ATM and follow the onscreen instructions to recharge their mobile phones. The ability to recharge using an ATM has been available to Reliance Jio and Airtel users, and now it is available to Vodafone Idea users as well.

Vodafone has also doubled the data available to users on the Rs 249, Rs 399 & Rs 599 recharges so people have more data when working from home.

In other telecom news, Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea are looking at a “contactless digital customer acquisition process” to boost their SIM card sales numbers. In any other month, the number of SIM cards sold to customers by the three telcos ranges between 2.5- 3 million but in March, this number stood at 500,000. You can read more about the contactless digital customer acquisition here.

If you are looking to recharge your phone and are looking at different data plans from different service providers, then here is a look at a comparison of prepaid plans between Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea.

On the entertainment front, BSNL is giving users access to BSNL TV. You can learn more about it here.

Disney+ Marvel Studios Phase 4 TV shows could still premiere in 2020

Disney has completely shut production on most of its live-action TV shows and feature films due to the ongoing health crisis which led to a huge reshuffle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 slate. While Marvel Studios announced new release dates for films like Black Widow and The Eternals, the new Disney+ shows set to premiere in 2020 could still be on track to meet the release dates.

That’s according to a press release issued by Disney+ France, first reported by MCUCosmic, that lists The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision to premiere sometime in 2020. This will be followed by Loki and What If… ? in 2021 and Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight in 2022.

Variety had earlier reported that Marvel Studios shut production on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and WandaVision due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the first MCU Phase 4 TV Show that’s scheduled to premiere sometime in August 2020 followed by WandaVision in December. With production coming to a standstill, it's not currently known if we will be able to see either of them making a debut in time.

Having said that, the Disney+ France press release surely instils hope for two of the most awaited TV shows to release in due course this year.

Marvel Studios Phase 4 feature film slate has been delayed with Black Widow now set for release on November 6. It was earlier slated for a May 1 premiere followed by the debut of The Eternals. It will now release on February 12, 2021. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings now premiere on May 7, 2021, while Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theatres on November 5, 2021.
