Vodafone Idea offers up to 6 percent cashback if you recharge for other customers

If you are a Vodafone Idea customer and would like to help recharge someone's number, then there is an incentive for you. If you recharge a Vodafone Idea number using the My Vodafone app or the My Idea app, then you can get a cashback up to 6 percent. This is under the Vodafone Idea #RechargeforGood initiative.

"The program enables every Vodafone and Idea customer to recharge for a friend, family or anyone who doesn't know how to recharge online or doesn't have access to the internet. This good deed will be rewarded with a cashback of up to 6 percent on recharges done by an existing Vodafone or Idea customer for someone else through MyVodafone App or MyIdea App," the company said in a statement.

The #RechargeforGood initiative went live on April 9, 2020, for Vodafone customers and on April 10 for Idea customers. The offer for both is available until April 30, 2020.

This is a good initiative from the telecom provider as there are many that work on prepaid numbers and need to visit a physical store to recharge once the validity or data on the number has expired. With the lockdown situation, it is difficult for many to find a physical store where they can recharge their numbers. Providers like Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone have tied up with bans to ensure users can recharge their numbers via an ATM as, during the lockdown, ATM services are still functional.

If you are looking to recharge someone else's number,  that is not a Vodafone Idea number, then know that you can do so using third-party apps like PayTM, Google Pay, banking apps and many more, each offering their own perks for recharging using the respective service.

During this time of lockdown, a lot of network service providers are offering more data and validity with their plans. If you are looking at data packs, you can check out our comparison of Vodafone vs Airtel vs Jio here. BSNL has launched its Rs 693 and Rs 1,212 prepaid plans with up to 500GB data and 365 days validity. You can read more about it here.

Google Pixel 4a key specifications and retail box leaks online

The Google Pixel 4a has been leaked in all its entirety and pictures of retail boxes have also made it to the internet. The phone was previously set to take the stage during Google’s annual developer's conference I/O 2020 and currently doesn’t have a release date as the event fell victim to the Coronavirus outbreak, across the world.

The successor to last year’s Pixel 3a, the Pixel 4a is the company’s mid-range phone that is expected to retail upwards of $399. In comparison, the Pixel 3a, when it launched in India, was priced starting at Rs 39,999.

An image of the Pixel 4a’s retail box has popped-up on the Internet and an exclusive 9to5Google report lays bare all there is to know about the upcoming Google Pixel 4a.

Google Pixel 4a leaked specifications

According to the report, the Pixel 4a features a 5.81-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution and uses an OLED panel. There’s is a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for the 8MP front-facing camera with an 84-degree field-of-view.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 618 GPU. This is paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options to choose from. The 4a does have the company’s proprietary Titan M security chip but still misses out on the Pixel Neural Core. Also missing is the array of Soli radar chip and other sensors that debuted on the Pixel 4 last year.

This, hopefully, indicates that Google could bring the Pixel 4a to India as the presence of Soli chip earlier on the Pixel 4 didn’t allow it to get certified for commercial use according to Indian laws.

Pixel 4a has a single 12.2MP camera with support for both OIS and EIS, while the front-facing camera is reportedly the same as the Pixel 3a. The phone’s rear camera is capable of recording in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120fps and 720p at up to 240fps while the selfie camera can shoot Full HD videos at 30fps.

The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and could come in two colours-- Just Black and Barely Blue. The 4a is pre-loaded with the new Google Assistant and other features like Now Playing. It also comes with an assurance of getting Android updates for the next three years.

The Pixel 4a is fitted with a 3,080mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging but skips out on wireless charging.

Google Stadia is coming to Android TV

When Google had announced Stadia, its cloud gaming service, to the world, there was a lot of excitement. Finally, the service went live in parts of the world and the reception was less than stellar. That has not deterred Google from progressing on its roadmap for the cloud gaming service. Apparently, a new update to the Stadia app has revealed that the service is soon heading to Android TVs.

Google’s roadmap for Stadia always included Android TV compatibility, something that would have greatly boosted its usability. 9to5Google performed a teardown of the latest Stadia APK and sure enough, there was code present to suggest that the service was headed to Android TVs very soon. They managed to sideload the Stadia app on their Android TV, which recognized the app as an Android TV app even. However, since Stadia limits the devices it can run on, the good people over at 9to5Google were not able to proceed past the title screen.

Google updated the Stadia app yesterday as it also launched the free tier of the service. Users would be able to purchase and stream games in 1080p at 60fps. Additionally, Google has also announced that it’ll be giving two months free service to subscribers, in light of the lockdown. Google Stadia is currently available in 14 countries only, mainly the United States of America, the United Kingdom and various other European countries. The company has not made any announcements on when it plans to bring the service to India.

India saw a slight dip in internet download speeds during March: Ookla

Quite expectedly, India recorded a notable decline in internet speeds in March, primarily because of the stress the networks are under with so many people working from home. The mean mobile download speed fell by 1.68Mbps while mean broadband mobile speeds fell by 3.67Mbps, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index.

The report states that with the networks under strain during the unprecedented lockdown period in India to curb the coronavirus menace, it is natural to see some level of slowdown.

Just how big of a decline are we talking about? India slipped two ranks down for mobile internet speeds and now ranks at 130th. Even in the broadband speed index, India declined two spots compared to the previous month. We’re at rank 71 globally in broadband speeds.

As for mean mobile download speeds, India posted a decline of 1.68Mbps. Mobile download speeds went from 11.83Mbps in February to 10.15Mbps in March 2020 according to the report. Similarly, mean broadband speeds fell from 39.65Mbps to 35.98Mbps.

To be fair, broadband speeds have been seeing a decline since the beginning of 2020. It came down from 41.48Mbps in January to 35.98Mbps in February, showing a drop of 5.5Mbps in speed.

“It is important to note that while the internet itself should handle elevated usage, there may be impacts to speed as people continue to move their daily activities increasingly online. While the core of the internet remains stable, some ISP networks may struggle to keep up,” Ookla CEO Doug Suttles said in a statement about the report.
