Apple, Google to work together to create COVID-19 contact tracing system for iOS and Android

Apple and Google have announced that they will be working together to fight the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. The two companies plan to enable the use of Bluetooth technology to help governments and health care agencies reduce the spread of the virus. However, in its release, Apple notes that user privacy and security will be central to the design.

The company stated, “since COVID-19 can be transmitted through close proximity to affected individuals, public health officials have identified contact tracing as a valuable tool to help contain its spread. A number of leading public health authorities, universities, and NGOs around the world have been doing important work to develop opt-in contact tracing technology. To further this cause, Apple and Google will be launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology to assist in enabling contact tracing. Given the urgent need, the plan is to implement this solution in two steps while maintaining strong protections around user privacy.”

The first step will be taken in May when both companies will release APIs that enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities. The company notes that these official apps will be available for users to download via their respective app.

Further, the companies plan on working together to enable broader Bluetooth-based contact tracing platform by building this functionality into the underlying platform. This is planned to launch in the coming months and the company claims that this would be a more robust solution than an API and should allow for more people to participate if they choose to opt-in. The companies claim that privacy, transparency and consent are very important and will be working together to build this functionality in consultation with “interested stakeholders”. The companies also say that both will openly publish information about their work for “others to analyze”.

Nokia 93 PureView, Nokia 73 tipped to launch in Q3, 2020: Report

It was recently reported that the launch of Nokia’s next flagship has been delayed, but now it looks like we have a clearer idea of when we can expect the smartphone to be unveiled. According to a report by NokiaPowerUser, the company plans to release the Nokia 9.3 PureView around that time, along with a mid-range smartphone called the Nokia 7.3. HMD Global has reportedly gone ahead with the testing of the two smartphones. However, the report also noted that is currently a tentative plan and a lot depends on the ongoing COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic.

Leaks suggest that the Nokia 9.3 PureView will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC with support for 5G connectivity. It is tipped to features a 6.29-inch QHD+ pOLED display. It will most likely come with Android 10 pre-installed. Details about optics are not yet known. However, one can expect it to feature a multi-camera configuration at the back, similar to the Nokia 9.1 PureView.

Details about the Nokia 7.3 are not yet known, but reports suggest that the phone will most likely be a mid-range smartphone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 700-series SoC.

Nokia’s current flagship smartphone, the Nokia 9.1 PureView offered decent specifications at launch, like a penta-camera setup with Zeiss optics. However, by the time it was launched in India, most of the competing phones had surpassed it. As such, it didn’t saw much success in the country.

In related news, HMD Global has announced that it was rolling out the Android 10 update for the Nokia 4.2 and the Nokia 3.2. This also means that nine Nokia smartphones have now been updated to the latest version of the Android OS.

Apple iOS14 could let users try apps without downloading them completely

The number of leaks surrounding iOS 14 is just starting to get a little ridiculous. Code analysed by 9to5Mac reveals another new feature that may be a part of Apple’s next iteration of its mobile operating system. The feature in question is termed Clips and it will let users experience an app without having to fully download it.

The feature was discovered by examining the Clips API, which reveals that users will be able to experience a part of the app through interactive cards. The feature is similar to Slices in Android, which shows interactive parts of an app in Google search results. Apple’s Clips will leverage the QR code reader to scan a code linked to the app of their choice and then receive the interactive portions of the app.

This is going to be beneficial for users who’ve felt curious about an app, downloaded it, only to realize it wasn’t what they were looking for. This feature would help prevent such situations where you’ve spent bandwidth downloading an app, only to delete it right after. What would be interesting to see is if paid apps would offer a similar experience. Currently, if you pay for an app and aren’t happy with it, there’s no easy way to get a refund. Apple doesn’t officially support refunds for purchased apps but will issue you one if you purchased the app by mistake. If Apple does end up implementing this feature, it could also help prevent people from spending on apps, only to find out later that it isn’t what they wanted. It would appear that iOS14 is going to bring a lot of amazing features and functionality to iPhone users. This includes new wallpaper settings, and even the ability to choose non-Apple apps as default apps.
