Vodafone Idea discontinues Double Data Offer in 8 circles

If you are a Vodafone Idea user then there is some bad news for you. Vodafone Idea has discontinued its double data offer in eight circles. The eight circles include Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra & Goa, the North East, Punjab, and UP West circles. This means that of the 22 circles, the double data plan will be available only in 14 circles. The double data plans gave users an attractive offer. The Rs 249, Rs 399 and Rs 599 plans gave users 3 GB data per day and a validity of 28 days, 56 days and 84 days, respectively. You can read more about the plans here.

Now the people in the 8 circles where the double data offer is not available will have to resort to plans like the Rs 699 plan that gives users 2GB daily data and a validity of 84 days. There is also the Rs 558 plan which gives users 3GB data daily and a validity of 56 days. This makes it expensive for people living in the eight circles to avail more data at a lower price on a daily basis.

With the lockdown in India extended till May 3, people are consuming more content. In such cases, the data cap of 1GB or 1.5GB may not be enough and people may be looking for more data to keep themselves entertained. To ensure there is no strain on networks, OTT platforms like Netflix and Prime Videos are reducing their bit rate to ensure there is no load on the network. Even YouTube has dropped its resolution to 480p on mobile devices to help ease network congestion.

In other Vodafone Idea news, you can recharge your number via an ATM if you can't find a shop near your house to do the same during the lockdown. You can also recharge your Vodafone Idea number via SMS. You can learn the step by step process on how to do that here.

LG G7 ThinQ receives Wi-Fi Calling update: Report

It looks like LG G7 ThinQ owners in India will finally be able to enjoy Wi-Fi Calling from their devices. According to a report by Gadgets360, the new feature is part of the V20n-MAR-10-2020 update that also includes the March security patch. The report also notes that the update is about 670.05MB in size and is being sent out via OTA. So all users should receive it soon. They can also manually check for the update by heading over to Settings -> System -> Update Center.

It should be noted that that only Airtel and Jio offers Wi-Fi Calling functionality in India. Both telecom operators launched the new services a few months back. Wi-Fi Calling aims to improve indoor calling by using an already existing Wi-Fi connection to make the call. Traditionally, mobile phones connect to cell phone towers which are placed outdoors. However, physical obstructions like walls make it hard for the signals to pass through.

Coming back to the LG G7 ThinQ, the smartphone packs a 6.1-inch QHD+ display with a 1440 x 3120p resolution. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC with 4GB RAM. At the back of the phone is a single 16MP camera, while at the front is an 8MP unit. The phone also packs a 3000mh battery, with support for 18W fast charging.

LG is also working on a new phone called 'Velvet'. The company said that it will be the first device to implement the company’s new brand strategy for smartphones. The company noted that it is moving away from alphanumeric designations, and will now use expressive names. As per the company, this will “help the consumer capture the essence of the device best suited for his or her personality and ever-changing trends. The name “Velvet” is intended to evoke images of lustrous smoothness and premium softness, two key characteristics of the new phone.” You can learn more about the LG Velvet here.

Indian government urges people not to use Zoom, wants startups to develop own video calling app

The Indian government has issued an advisory saying that the Zoom video conferencing service isn’t a “safe platform” to use and has asked its employees and various departments not to use it for carrying out any official work. This notice comes as Zoom is gaining wide-spread popularity in the backdrop of the Coronavirus crisis. However, as more and more people signed-up on the website, it also put a spotlight on the lack of solid security measures which led to a blanket ban by many companies and governments around the world.

In the 16-odd-page advisory (pdf) issued by the Cyber Coordination Centre (CyCord) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the cybersecurity agency lists down ways to prevent unauthorized access from Zoom and curb any chances of a DOS attack as well. To this effect, the advisory asks users to follow the guidelines and tweak some settings in case they want to use the Zoom video conferencing app for their private purpose.

— Prasar Bharati News Services (@PBNS_India) April 16, 2020

Zoom initially gained popularity when several schools, colleges and corporates started using the service and clocked 200 million daily average users by March 2020. But the video conferencing app was subject to scrutiny and a lawsuit as it was found that it wasn’t as secure as it advertised. This later impacted the company's share price and while the app has been trending in India for quite some time now, this latest advisory by the government could hamper its further growth.

Some of the other security measures suggested by the government in its advisory include setting a new login for every meeting, use of waiting room for streamlined access, screen sharing by the host, restrict re-joining, file transfer options, remove recording and more. These guidelines may be followed in case a user wants to use Zoom, but it is recommended to use alternative video-conferencing apps such as Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Skype and more.

The Indian government has also put an interesting spin on the issue by hosting a new program for the development of a home-made video conferencing service under its Digital India program. Hosted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under its Startup Hub initiative, the “Innovation Challenge for Development of Video Conferencing Solution” has been announced for startups to build a video conferencing solution for the Indian government that will be deployed for a period of 4 years.

The Ministry has laid out a set of pointers for startups to follow and the challenge is scheduled to be held in three stages-- Ideation, Prototype and Solution Building. The top-10 teams to qualify the first stage are eligible for a 5 lakh INR grant for building the prototype of the video calling service.

The final winner is set to get a prize amount of 1 Crore INR from the government for the creation and deployment of the service for the first year and subsequently 10 lakh INR per year till the government aims to use the service.

The government has asked people from academics and industry to come together to participate in this initiative and the due date for registration is April 30.
