Webkinz World childrens game security breach leaves accounts details of 23 million users out in the open

Online children's game Webkinz suffered a security breach earlier this month that rendered details of over 23 million users out by an anonymous hacker. Webkinz World by the Canadian toy company Ganz was launched back in 2005 and is considered one of the most popular children’s games of all time.

According to a report by ZDNet, an anonymous hacker gained access to Webkinz database containing usernames and passwords of over 23 million users and leaked it on a popular internet forum. ZDNet further reports that it was able to get access to the leaked database and confirms that over 22,982,319 sets of usernames and passwords were stolen in the security breach.

The hacker used an SQL injection vulnerability on the Webkinz website to gain access to the database of registered users. The vulnerability on the website has been doing rounds of various hacker forums on the internet for quite some time now. The individuals responsible for the breach have also gained access to email addresses of parents, but this database hasn’t been leaked publically as yet. It is also unclear whether hackers have been able to access details of archived accounts as well.

However, Webkinz detected the vulnerability and has patched it to prevent further attacks on its database. In a statement, the company says, “Webkinz has never asked for last names, phone numbers or addresses and all transactions happen through our eStore, which has its own servers and accounts, which are in no way accessible through Webkinz. So even if someone was to decrypt a password, there is no information of value on the accounts beyond the game data itself."

The company is also improving its encryption techniques and is reviewing all points of entry into their system. While Webkinz hasn’t asked its users to change passwords in the wake of the security lapse, the company is currently assessing the risk and will contact users in case password changes are required.

MIUI 12: Xiaomi could announce new UI with Redmi Note 9 in China

We probably got our first look at MIUI 12 through the beta version of the Settings app. Xiaomi regularly releases beta versions of its apps to the MIUI Community forums and the latest addition is the Mi Settings app APK that was released a few days ago. The app features a revamped user interface giving us a good look at the design aesthetics of the upcoming update to the popular user interface. Leaks out of China also claim MIUI 12 will launch by the end of April or beginning of May.

The app was first spotted by a member from the XDA-Developer forums who also collected a few screenshots of the app. Xiaomi has since pulled the app down, so we can’t be 100 percent sure what we are seeing is indeed MIUI 12.

The upgraded Settings app show a new design and new options. For one, there is a new refresh rate menu which lets you choose between 60Hz and 120Hz with illustration to make you see the difference. There is also a new screen time week view but in a graph instead of a bar chart. The new app also shows a Focus Mode that will seemingly silent all incoming notifications to let you concentrate.

Going by the Settings app, we can expect some minor design upgrades. So far, the change in aesthetics are in highlighting the menu option with an elliptical highlight box, and lots of roundish boxes.

MIUI 12 officially teased

Furthermore, Xiaomi company executive Xu Jieyun has already teased the launch of MIUI 12 through a post on Weibo. According to the post, MIUI 12 is already in development and will soon be available in the market. The UI is expected to be based on Android 10 since MIUI 11 already works with devices running on Android 8 and Android 9. MIUI 12 could also get an Android 11 version.

You can expect more features (going by what other custom interfaces have released this year) that includes a better dark mode, more control over ads, enhanced notification system, a new camera UI and gestures. None of these features are confirmed, however.

Rumours state MIUI 12 could launch in the next 10 days

While there's no official release date, a well known Chinese tipster posted a screenshot on Weibo that shows the Chinese Mi Community app with a dedicated section for MIUI 12 along with a mesage at the bottom saying 'pre-registrations for MIUI will begin in 11 days', indicating that Xiaomi could announce the UI by the end of April or beginning of May.

More reports out of China states the new UI launch will coincide with the launch of the Redmi Note 9 series in China where Xiaomi is expected to launch a 5G-powered Redmi Note 9 powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC.

Microsoft Notepad back on the Store with new features

Microsoft’s Notepad has been a ubiquitous part of the Windows operating system for decades; three decades to be more precise. It was a simple, straightforward app that let you write and edit plain text documents and even work on source codes. While the app did make a comeback on the Windows Store back in August last year, it was quickly pulled. First spotted by betanews.com, the app is now back on the Store and offers a host of new features.

As per the report, the new app features wrap-around find/replace option. This is said to allow it to remember previously entered values and the state of checkboxes and automatically populate the same the next time they find dialogue box is opened. Further, when a text is selected and the find dialogue box is opened, it will automatically populate the search field with the selected text.

It is also said to offer a text zooming feature that will also allow users to zoom into text. Users will be able to do that by heading to Menu and then selecting Zoom. It can also be done by using Ctrl+Plus or Ctrl+Minus to zoom in or out or use Ctrl+mouse wheel to do the same. Ctrl+0 restores the zoom level to default. Another notable feature is the ability to display line and column numbers when word-wrap is enabled.

In related news, Microsoft-owned Mojang finally released the RTX Beta update for Minecraft. The update is a part of a collaboration between Nvidia, Mojang and Microsoft and brings with it ray-tracing capabilities. As one might expect, the addition of ray-tracing adds a whole new dimension and realism to the game, one that you would not expect from a game where everything is a block. As one might expect, you would need at least an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 to run the game. To know more, click here.
