Acer Nitro 5 with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU to only get low-end GPU options

Acer had earlier announced the refresh of the Acer Nitro 5 2020, featuring Intel’s latest 10th generation processors and powerful Nvidia GPUs. The laptop will now come with up to an Intel Core i7-10750H processor and up to an Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU. Acer has now announced that they will be launching an AMD Ryzen powered version of the Nitro 5 2020 as well, but it will not be getting a high-end GPU like its Intel counterpart.

Acer has revealed that the Nitro 5 2020 powered by Renoir CPUs will come equipped with an Nvidia GTX 1650Ti at most. While the GTX 1650Ti is very much able to take on most games, it is not equipped with raytracing or tensor cores. Even so, it is still on the lowest of Nvidia’s GPU ladder and it is sad to see Acer pair this up with AMD’s excellent Ryzen 7 4800H processor. Additionally, Acer has said that the AMD powered model will be limited to 15.6-inch form-factor, with Intel claiming exclusivity over the 17-incher.

This is hardly the first time AMD has received the short end of the stick when it comes to powerful components. Traditionally, AMD counterparts of laptops have always been positioned as the more “budget-friendly” option, and as such, received components that obey that image more than they do a performance metric. AMD’s latest Renoir CPUs have shown immense performance gains than anything before, with the Ryzen 4800HS gaining lots of praise for its performance in the Zephyrus G14 and the leaked benchmark numbers of the Ryzen 7-4800U show that these are very capable processors. Pairing a powerful processor like the Ryzen 7-4800H with an Nvidia GTX 1650Ti is bound to create a GPU bottleneck at some point in the gaming process. Additionally, this is likely to be the Max-Q version of the GPU, further lowering its power.

As of now, Asus is the only brand to have paired an RTX-based GPU with AMD’s Renoir CPUs. The ROG Zephyrus G14 come with up to a Ryzen 9 4900HS  and an RTX 2060 GPU, whereas the Asus TUF A17 will sport up to a Ryzen 7 4800H also paired with an RTX 2060 GPU. All other brands who have announced Renoir based laptops such as MSI’s Bravo series, the Lenovo Legion 5 and even Acer here, have all stuck to the GTX-series of GPUs, leaving the high-end graphics chip exclusive to Intel.

OnePlus camera app set to receive a major update soon

OnePlus has a history of releasing major software updates soon after a new smartphone is launched. This time, it seems like the camera software is ready to get a makeover as the latest OnePlus Camera app v4 update is expected to be rolled out this week.

We haven’t seen OnePlus’ stock camera app receiving much criticism but looks like the new tweaks are going to make it neater. Android Police spotted the latest software and has shared the APK, but it is advised to be installed only on the OnePlus 8 series phones unless you want to risk your older OnePlus. Since we do not have the new phones in India yet, we could not try the new camera app. However, Android Police shared a few screenshots of the app, giving an idea of what to expect from the update.

As per the screenshots shared by Android Police, the most noticeable change is that settings are now accessible from a new button in the top right. Google Lens gets a dedicated button in the viewfinder, while earlier, we had to tap and hold on the screen to activate it.

There are some readjustments done on the quick settings bar on the top of the viewfinder. A new filter and resolution selection toggles are added, and the aspect ratio toggle is removed. Further, things are moved around a little in the settings menu as well. The UltraShot HDR mode shifts to the top of the settings menu, followed by the aspect ratio selector, nightscape, and video. Looking at all the tweaks, it's apparent that OnePlus has put the frequently used toggles upfront, replacing them with lesser-used ones.

As mentioned, Android Police notes that the Camera v4 only works on the OnePlus 8 series phones. Some users have reported camera issues and crashed when installed on older OnePlus phones. To be on the safer side, we recommend you to wait until the official update hits your phones. It is also not confirmed whether only the OnePlus 8-series will receive this update or the older phones will get it too.

Scientists discover Earth-sized planet orbiting the habitable zone of a red dwarf star

Scientists have discovered an actual Earth-sized exoplanet that is currently in orbit around the habitable zone of a red dwarf star. Dubbed Kepler-1649c, the planet was not discovered until a group of researchers took a deeper look at the data they collected which was originally mislabeled. After careful study, they found that the planet is a little larger than Earth and gets about 75% as much sunlight as Earth does from the Sun. A report from Space Flight Insider says that the planet is about 1.06 times the size of our own planet.

Don’t get your hopes too high though as Kelper-1649c is about 300 light-years away from our planet and orbits its red dwarf star once every 19.5 Earth days. The associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Thomas Zurbuchen said, “This intriguing, distant world gives us even greater hope that a second Earth lies among the stars, waiting to be found. The data gathered by missions like Kepler and our Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will continue to yield amazing discoveries as the science community refines its abilities to look for promising planets year after year”. Currently, scientists have no data on the atmosphere on the planet.

Even though information about the planet is not readily available because of the difficulty in judging exactly what constitutes its atmosphere, scientists are hopeful that they can find more planets in the habitable zone of different stars. Well, keep your fingers crossed because we’ve certainly made a mess of our own planet and maybe the only way to ensure the species’ survival is to take to the stars.

Oppo Reno 3A tipped to feature quad-cameras and Snapdragon 665

After launching the Oppo Find X2 yesterday, Oppo is rumoured to add another handset to the Reno-series soon. Rumours suggest that Oppo is working on a new smartphone - Oppo Reno 3A.

Folks at Pricebaba have learnt from popular tipster Ishan Agarwal, that Oppo is preparing to launch Oppo Reno 3A powered by a Snapdragon 665 chipset and will be available in 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. There's no indication whether there will be more variants or not.

The report also claims that the phone will come with a quad-camera setup consisting of a 48MP primary camera with f/1.7 aperture, f/2.25 8MP camera, and two 2MP cameras with f/2.4 aperture. The other three lenses apart from the main one could be a wide, macro and depth-information. The front camera is said to be a 16MP shooter. Oppo's Reno series has a history of bringing camera-centric smartphones, and the hardware on this one also suggests the same.

Further, it reveals that Oppo Reno 3A will have a 4025mAh battery (same as the Reno3 Pro) and will run on Android OS (supposedly Android 10) with the company's ColorOS 7.1 skin on top. It measures 161 x 74 x 8.2mm and weighs 175g. Interestingly, the weight of the phones is the same as Reno3 Pro, and the dimensions are also very identical on paper.

Oppo recently launched the Reno 3 Pro in India at INR 29,990. Going by the specifications, it is fair to expect the Reno 3A to priced lower than the Pro variant. As of now, there's no official or rumoured news on the price and availability of the smartphone.

AMD budget-friendly Ryzen 3 3300X and Ryzen 3 3100 announced alongside B550 chipset

AMD is continuing its onslaught on Intel, and announced two new desktop processors, the Ryzen 3 3100 and Ryzen 3 3300X. Both the processors are built on the new Zen 2 architecture which utilizes a 7nm manufacturing process. The new processors will sit at the entry-level segment of the Zen-2 based processors and are expected to go toe-to-toe with Intel’s offerings.

AMD Ryzen 3 3300X Specifications

The AMD Ryzen 3 3300X is a quad-core processor with SMT enabled, meaning it gets 8 threads. It has a base clock speed of 3.8GHz and a boost clock of 4.1GHz. We expect this number represents a single-core boost clock, with an all-core number not having been shared by the company yet. What’s really impressive is that AMD has paired 18MB of cache to the 3300X, a number that’s 80 percent higher than its predecessor, the 2300X which had only 10MB of cache. The chip has a relatively low TDP of just 65W, meaning that even under the heaviest of loads, it would only require a modest cooler. This would also make the Ryzen 3 3300X ideal for small form-factor PCs. The Ryzen 3 3300X is expected to be launched at a price of $120, with expected availability of May 21.

AMD Ryzen 3 3100 Specifications

The Ryzen 3 3100 surprisingly shares a lot in common with the Ryzen 3 3300X. It sports the same 4 Zen 2 cores with 8 threads, the same 18MB cache and even then 65W TDP. Where we see a change in specs is with relation to the clock speeds. The Ryzen 3 3100 has a base clock speed of 3.6GHz and a boost clock of 3.9GHz. With a reduction in clock speeds, we also see a modest reduction in price, with the Ryzen 3 3100 coming in at a price tag of just $99. The expected release date remains May 21.

AMD Ryzen 3 3300x and 3100 India Price and Availability

As of now, AMD has only made a general announcement with respect to the price and availability of the Ryzen 3 3300X and Ryzen 3 3100 processors. In the past, we have seen AMD processors be priced a little higher in India, perhaps due to the import duty levied on them. For example, a Ryzen 7 3700X which launched for $329, but is sold in India for a price ranging between Rs 27,000-28,500. We do expect the Ryzen 3 3100 to come in below the Rs 10,000 mark, with the Ryzen 3 3300X costing under Rs 12,000. This is of course speculation based on previous pricing trends, so it should be taken with some scepticism.

Meet the B550: A New Budget-friendly Chipset

While announcing two new entry-level processors, AMD has also introduced the new B550 chipset. The B550 chipset will let budget PC builders take full advantage of the third-generation Ryzen CPUs, in particular, PCIe 4.0. Currently, only the X570 chipset fully supported PCIe 4.0, with older X470 and B450 chipsets only supporting it partially on the PCIe X16 slots due to them being wired directly to the CPU. AMD in its press release has said that motherboards with the B550 chipset should be available starting June 16, 2020, from all partners such as Gigabyte, Asus, MSI etc. Assuming that board manufacturers and their supply-chain is in full functioning condition, it still does not guarantee that AMD will be able to meet the timeline in India, due to the ongoing lockdown. We do expect some delays, but they should not be long enough to put off potential buyers.
