5G iPhone delayed until October, iPhone SE Plus pushed to late 2021: Kuo

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has issued a note stating that the 5G version of the 2020 iPhone has been delayed, as has been the iPhone SE Plus. Rumours around the iPhone SE Plus have started gathering steam only recently, but it was Kuo who had predicted the launch of the phone back in September 2019. Now, his forecast isn’t that great.

Kuo has stated in his note to investors that the 5G iPhone will be delayed to October 2020, mostly due to the cascading effect of the COVID-19 outbreak. According to Cult of Mac who saw the research note first hand, Kuo says that Apple is one month late in starting the Engineering Verification Test for all the upcoming iPhone models. “The mmWave iPhone will be pushed back because the design of the antenna in package (AiP) changes in early April. Additionally, the test lab is closed and can’t offer qualification process services,” notes Kuo. However, this does not mean that all iPhone models slated for launch this year are delayed. The note goes on to say that the 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch models of the iPhone will most likely go into mass production in September, keeping them on track for the usual September launch. Kuo had earlier predicted that all 2020 iPhone models would have 5G.

What has probably taken the biggest hit is the rumoured iPhone SE Plus. This alleged device is supposed to come with no home button and no faceID, with the fingerprint sensor built into the power button instead. Originally predicted to launch in the first half of 2020 by Kuo back in December 2019, Kuo’s research note now simply states “We think that Apple will likely postpone the new model from 1H21 to 2H21.” Apple, however, did launch the iPhone SE earlier this month globally.

Unlike with the 5G variant of the iPhone, Kuo does not give a reason why the iPhone SE Plus is being pushed to 2021, or rather, why he believes the phone is being pushed to 2021.

Say Namaste is Indias alternative to Zoom - can support upto 25 people on video call

Say Namaste, a video conferencing service by Mumbai-based Inscripts is being pegged as an official Indian government-backed video calling solution. However, that’s not the case as the company has clarified that it’s video calling service has been developed in-house without any consultation from the government. That said, many popular video-calling apps and services such as Google Duo, Zoom, among others are seeing increased sign-ups owing to folks working from home due to the Coronavirus outbreak in various parts of the world.

While the Indian government has issued an advisory asking people not to use Zoom video conferencing service as its not a safe platform and was widely scrutinized for its security lapses, Say Namaste comes at a time when more businesses and people are resorting to video calls for necessary work. In an interview to News18 tech, Anuj Garg, CEO of Inscripts clarifies the company’s stance saying that its video service Say Namaste was built in-house with a team of 50+ developers in just a matter of two days.

“It’s a positive thing, and we are happy that so many people are actually talking about us right now. We would, of course, be happy to work more closely with the government, but all of that is in the future,” Garg added.

Say Namaste is in the beta stage currently which means that the service is not fully stable to be used widely. There could be bugs and issues while using the web-based video conferencing solution which is why the company has decided to go for a security audit to fix several issues. While an official launch is weeks away, the company has submitted builds of the app to Google and Apple to be listed on the respective app stores.

The company is also looking to make its video calling service more secure by adding features like two-factor authentication and email indexing for businesses to prevent unauthorized access to a company-call. Garg doesn’t see Say Namaste as a viable Zoom competitor yet as the company is focusing on ease of use factors primarily. Currently, starting a video call on Say Namaste is fairly easy with support for up to 25 participants simultaneously and the developers are working on increasing that limit to 100 users.

Say Namaste will also be participating in the Indian government’s “Innovation Challenge for Development of Video Conferencing Solution” that’s been announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under its Startup Hub initiative. The government is looking for a home-grown video conferencing service that can be deployed on a wider-scale for all official work for 4 years. To this end, the government is offering a five-lakh INR grant to top 10 qualifiers of its challenge, with the final winner being awarded a 1-crore INR prize money. The deadline for submissions of a Made-in-India video calling app is April 30.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Specifications, features and prices compared

Motorola Edge+ was just unveiled at a virtual event hosted by the company due to the Coronavirus pandemic that has forced people to stay at home, with most businesses taking a direct hit due to slowdown. However, smartphone companies are coming up with new phones with online launches now. OnePlus did it for its OnePlus 8 series and now Motorola is re-entring the flagship segment after two years with the Edge+.

The phone follows the current trends adopted by the current crop of flagship phones with the latest Qualcomm processor, high-refresh-rate display, versatile camera setup and a big battery to power it. The same is also true for the recently launched OnePlus 8 Pro which is why we decided to pit both phones against each other for this specification-based comparison.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Pricing

Motorola Edge+ is priced at $999 in the US but its Indian pricing hasn’t been announced yet. By the current conversion ratio, the Edge+ could be priced around Rs 76,000 in India. As for the OnePlus 8 Pro, it starts at Rs 54,999 for the base variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage while the maxed-out model with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage retails for 59,999 in India. Interestingly, the OnePlus 8 Pro is much affordable in India than in the US.

Having said that, there’s no word when the Coronavirus lockdown will end in India and deliveries of non-essential goods be permitted. So, we’ll have to wait a while before we see the Edge+ launch in India.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Design and Display

Motorola Edge+ has a metal and glass design with a display that wraps around the edges and is dubbed the “waterfall display”. It measures 9.6mm at it’s thickest point and weighs 203 grams. On the other hand, OnePlus 8 Pro is also built using an aluminium chassis and glass back but is thinner than the Edge+ at 8.5mm thickness and is lightweight at 199 grams. The rear panel of the phone is also coated with a layer of Gorilla Glass which is missing from the Edge+. The 8 Pro is also IP68 certified making it resistant to dust and water.

The Edge+ features a 6.67-inch display that uses an AMOLED panel flushed with a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner that houses the selfie camera. The display has a Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution,  90Hz refresh rate support and is certified to playback HDR10+ content.

OnePlus 8 Pro features a slightly larger 6.78-inch AMOLED screen that has a QHD+ (3168 x 1440 pixels) resolution and supports 120Hz refresh rate. Like the Edge+, the display is certified for HDR10+ playback but is topped by Gorilla Glass coating for added protection against daily wear and tear.

Being flagship phones in their own right, both the phones come fitted with an in-display fingerprint sensor for easier phone unlock.

OnePlus’ display has also received critical appreciation from DisplayMate and has broken over 13 records in their benchmarking tests. That’s why it’s rated as A+ but we still have to get our hands on the phones to have a detailed look.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Under the hood

Motorola Edge+ marks the comeback of a flagship smartphone in the company’s catalogue as it is powered by top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with built-in 5G support. The new processor gets a decent 25% bump in performance while leveraging Qualcomm’s fifth-generation AI Engine.

This is paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage with an option to expand the storage by upto 1TB using microSD card.

On the other hand, OnePlus 8 Pro is powered by the same chipset but comes in two storage variants. The base model has 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS 3.1 storage followed by the maxed-out version with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

Motorola Edge+ runs on stock Android 10 out-of-the-box with some specifications customizations done by the company and not to forget, the popular Moto Actions also make a return.

However, OxygenOS on the OnePlus 8 Pro is a whole different ball game altogether as it has been tweaked and optimised in such a way that it’s fast and smooth in general use at all times. The phone also has a dedicated MEMC chip built-in that’s responsible for smoothening out low frame rates video playback.

With the latest powerful processor underneath, both the phones are expected to offer great performance, it’s just the optimizations done at the fundamental level make the experience better, something that OnePlus is known for.

Other than that, both the phones feature a decent array of sensors and connectivity features. The 8 Pro supported Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD codec while the Edge+ comes with Bluetooth 5.0.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Cameras

The Edge+ has a triple camera setup that consists of a primary 108MP camera with an f/1.7 aperture, an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens with 117-degree field-of-view. The main camera can record in 6K UHD at 30fps and is supported by OIS. On the front, there’s a 25MP selfie camera housed within the punch-hole notch cutout with an f/2.0 aperture.

OnePlus 8 Pro features a quad-camera setup that consists of a primary 48MP camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a secondary 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, a 48MP ultra-wide-angle-lens and a 5MP depth sensor to assist in portrait photography. The rear cameras can do 4K UHD videos at upto 60fps and is supported by EIS and OIS on the primary sensor. On the front, there’s a 16MP selfie camera with an f/2.5 aperture and supported by EIS.

Both the phones come with a versatile array of camera sensors, but we’ll have to test the phones ourselves to form an accurate opinion about the photography capabilities of the Edge+ and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Motorola Edge+ vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Battery

Motorola Edge+ is fitted with a 5,000mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging thanks to the company’s TurboPower solution. The phone also supports fast wireless charging at 15W peak output.

OnePlus 8 Pro has a slightly smaller 4,500mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging via Warp Charge solution. The phone supports 30W fast wireless charging as well.

Motorola Edge and Edge+ launched: Price, specs, features, availability

Motorola is staging a comeback in the flagship segment with its new Motorola Edge+ along with an affordable Motorola Edge. Both phones were slated to be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 but due to the Coronavirus outbreak in various parts of the world, the conference, along with all major events now stand delayed or completely scrapped. However, many smartphone companies have taken to host virtual launch events in the wake of COVID-19 crisis. Recently, OnePlus launched its OnePlus 8 series of phones followed by the launch of the Apple iPhone SE 2020.

Motorola also announced its Edge series in a similar virtual event with the Edge+ taking the spotlight as the company’s next flagship phone. It comes packed with the latest processor, a versatile camera setup, high refresh rate display and stock Android 10 to boot.

Let’s take a brief look at the specifications, features and pricing of Motorola Edge+ and the regular Edge.

Motorola Edge+ specifications and features

Motorola Edge+ is a flagship phone that borrows a lot of the elements from the current crop of premium smartphones. The body is made from a combination of metal and glass with a vivid display that wraps around the edges (and hence the name) just like what we’ve seen other smartphone manufacturers try in the past.

The phone measures 9.6mm at its thickest point and weigh 203 grams. It doesn’t come with a certified water-resistant rating but the company has faith in its protective design. The phone features a 6.67-inch display that uses an AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. The screen has a punch-hole cutout on the top-left corner that lends it a 21:9 aspect ratio and is also certified for HDR10+ playback. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone quickly.

The display edges can use customized to light up in case of notification alerts or incoming calls. The edges are also customizable for gaming and users can deploy two on-screen shoulder buttons when playing games like PUBG Mobile or Call of Duty Mobile.

Motorola Edge+ is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with built-in 5G support that ensures the phone is 5G-ready. The octa-core processor is clocked at upto 2.84GHz paired with Adreno 650 GPU. The Snapdragon 865 chip offers a 25% increase in performance over Snapdragon 855 with fifth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine support. The Edge+ is being offered in a single variant with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. There’s an option to increase the storage by upto 1TB using a microSD card. The phone runs on stock Android 10 out-of-the-box as expected with some added Moto customizations that are common with all its phones.

The Edge+ comes with a triple camera setup that consists of a primary 108MP camera along with an 8MP telephoto camera with upto 3x optical zoom and a 16MP ultra-wide-angle lens with a 117-degree field-of-view. The main camera uses pixel binning technique to create pictures with an f/1.7 aperture and can record in up to 6K UHD supported by OIS. The telephoto lens also supports OIS and lets you capture far-out with its 3x optical zoom. On the front, there’s a 25MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

The phone has a 5,000mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging, both wired and wireless. Motorola claims that the phone can power through two days worth of battery life on a single charge, but we won’t be too sure of it till we get to test it ourselves.

Motorola Edge specifications and features

Motorola Edge, the younger sibling features a similar build and uses the same display as the Edge+. Though, the regular Edge is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 chipset with an octa-core CPU clocked at upto 2.4GHz with Adreno 620 GPU. The phone comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage with an option to increase the storage by using the hybrid microSD slot.

The camera setup on the Motorola Edge is also slightly different as it uses a 64MP primary camera instead. The main camera has an f/1.9 aperture and is paired with the same telephoto lens but with 2x optical zoom, ultra-wide and selfie cameras as on the Edge+. Additionally, there’s a depth sensor on the Edge that will be assisting the camera system in creating portrait pictures.

Moreover, the Edge has a slightly smaller battery rated at 4,500mAh with 15W fast charging support that’s said to offer a day’s worth of battery and then some.

Motorola Edge, Edge+ Price and Availability

Motorola Edge is priced at $650 in the US while the Motorola Edge+ will be up for grabs at $999. The company hasn’t announced additional availability details in various regions yet.

Whether the Motorola Edge series lands up in India isn’t known at the moment, however, we’re keeping an eye out on a possible launch in India post-lockdown.

Acer Nitro 5 with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H CPU to only get low-end GPU options

Acer had earlier announced the refresh of the Acer Nitro 5 2020, featuring Intel’s latest 10th generation processors and powerful Nvidia GPUs. The laptop will now come with up to an Intel Core i7-10750H processor and up to an Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU. Acer has now announced that they will be launching an AMD Ryzen powered version of the Nitro 5 2020 as well, but it will not be getting a high-end GPU like its Intel counterpart.

Acer has revealed that the Nitro 5 2020 powered by Renoir CPUs will come equipped with an Nvidia GTX 1650Ti at most. While the GTX 1650Ti is very much able to take on most games, it is not equipped with raytracing or tensor cores. Even so, it is still on the lowest of Nvidia’s GPU ladder and it is sad to see Acer pair this up with AMD’s excellent Ryzen 7 4800H processor. Additionally, Acer has said that the AMD powered model will be limited to 15.6-inch form-factor, with Intel claiming exclusivity over the 17-incher.

This is hardly the first time AMD has received the short end of the stick when it comes to powerful components. Traditionally, AMD counterparts of laptops have always been positioned as the more “budget-friendly” option, and as such, received components that obey that image more than they do a performance metric. AMD’s latest Renoir CPUs have shown immense performance gains than anything before, with the Ryzen 4800HS gaining lots of praise for its performance in the Zephyrus G14 and the leaked benchmark numbers of the Ryzen 7-4800U show that these are very capable processors. Pairing a powerful processor like the Ryzen 7-4800H with an Nvidia GTX 1650Ti is bound to create a GPU bottleneck at some point in the gaming process. Additionally, this is likely to be the Max-Q version of the GPU, further lowering its power.

As of now, Asus is the only brand to have paired an RTX-based GPU with AMD’s Renoir CPUs. The ROG Zephyrus G14 come with up to a Ryzen 9 4900HS  and an RTX 2060 GPU, whereas the Asus TUF A17 will sport up to a Ryzen 7 4800H also paired with an RTX 2060 GPU. All other brands who have announced Renoir based laptops such as MSI’s Bravo series, the Lenovo Legion 5 and even Acer here, have all stuck to the GTX-series of GPUs, leaving the high-end graphics chip exclusive to Intel.
