Zoom 50 update released with several security improvements amidst public backlash

Zoom has released a 5.0 update to its popular video conferencing service with many security and privacy improvements that give the company some breathing space amidst public backlash. The Indian government even issued an advisory that states Zoom isn’t a safe platform for official communication and hence restricted its employees from using the app for official work.

Zoom’s latest update targets this outrage with reinforced security features like the support for AES 256-bit encryption, the ability to report a user and more. In a statement to the press, Oded Gal, CPO of Zoom said, “From our network to our feature set to our user experience, everything is being put through rigorous scrutiny. On the back end, AES 256-bit GCM encryption will raise the bar for securing our users’ data in transit. On the front end, I’m most excited about the Security icon in the meeting menu bar. This takes our security features, existing and new, and puts them front and centre for our meeting hosts. With millions of new users, this will make sure they have instant access to important security controls in their meetings.”

Zoom 5.0 update details

Zoom’s latest update brings more robust network support with new control options and a focus on improving the user experience. The update brings support for AES 256-bit GCM encryption standard that strengthens the security of data transmitted between calls making it secure from unauthorized access.

This new encryption technology is being rolled out to Zoom Meeting, Webinar and Phone data will be activated on May 30, after all accounts have been seeded the 5.0 update. Moreover, administrators can now choose to control which data centre is being used to route traffic to your Zoom meeting.

The new update also adds a dedicated security menu button in the video calling interface that groups together all the necessary security options. Zoom meeting hosts will also be able to report a user from Security settings and restrict participants from changing their log-in names.

Zoom users who own a Basic, education or a Pro account will now notice that the waiting room is enabled by default for hosts to keep participants ready to join the meeting. The update also activates meeting passwords by default and hosts can even modify the password complexity.

Call recordings stored on cloud servers can be accessed by hosts without any password but everyone else would require a password to access those recordings.

Zoom 5.0 also brings in support for organizations to link contacts across multiple accounts for people to easily search for meetings and chats.

Crash Bandicoot Mobile makes its way to Android devices, but you may not be able to play it yet

Crash Bandicoot was an iconic character associated with the original PlayStation Console back in the mid-’90s. Today, the remaster of the original trilogy along with the cart racing game, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is available across all consoles. The only platform where Crash needed to launch officially is the smartphone. It looks like that dream is becoming a reality too. Crash Bandicoot Mobile is available for download via the Google Play Store in Malaysia only. There is no information on when the game will come to India.

The format of the game is that it is an endless runner, just like we’ve seen in games like Temple Run. Crash will run on his own, and players can tap for his spin attack, swipe up to jump, down to slide, and side to side to avoid obstacles.

‘King’ the studio behind Candy Crush has developed the game. The studio is owned by Activision Blizzard. The game's description reads, “In this new mobile episode, Dr Neo Cortex has dispatched mutagen henchmen across the multiverse to enslave all dimensions. With the help of his sister Coco, Crash must bash Cortex's minions back to their own dimensions!”

Some key levels like Temple Ruins, Lost City, Wumpa Island, and Turtle Woods are there in the game’s description. Levels will also feature hidden paths that lead to new levels, rewards, and challenges. If you search for Crash Bandicoot in the Google Play Store in India, then you will not see the game as it isn't available here. However, you will see a lot of Crash Bandicoot clone games. Don't be fooled by them. The game is also expected to launch on iOS but there is no information on when the game will hit iOS devices.

A fun fact is that Crash Bandicoot was developed by Naughty Dog. The studio went on to become a first-party Sony Studio and has published games like the Last of Us, the Uncharted franchise, and many more.

Realme Buds Wireless Pro surfaces on certification website, live images leaked

A new pair of wireless earphones from Realme may launch soon in Taiwan after the Realme Buds Wireless Pro reportedly cleared regulatory checks in Taiwan. Realme had launched the Realme Buds Air (review), an AirPod lookalike and rival, and now it seems to be going back a few steps and adding a ‘pro’ variant to the Buds Wireless series.

The Realme Buds Wireless are neckband-style wireless headphones with IPX4 splash resistance and 12 hours of playback on a single charge. A new Buds Wireless Pro should make things even better. The upcoming pair of wireless headphones passed through Taiwanese regulatory website NCC, which was first discovered by MySmartPrice, who also happened to grab a few live images of the headphones.

The NCC listing reveals the neckband-style wireless headphones will carry the model number RMA208. Design-wise, they look a lot similar to the Buds Wireless including the yellow and black colour design, with some small changes. That includes a USB-C port for charging instead of the MicroUSB found on the Buds Wireless. A groove right next to the port indicates Realme could protect the port with a flap, increasing the water resistance.

The Realme Buds Wireless Pro, as the name suggests, should also bring improvements to audio quality. While the certification listing doesn’t lay out the new features, it does give us a good hard look at the upcoming pair of wireless earphones from Realme.

Xiaomi Redmi 10X key specifications leaked ahead of launch in China

Xiaomi Redmi 10X has been spotted online and could launch soon in China. The phone has been leaked in its entirety with key specifications and renders of the upcoming Redmi phone already out in the open. The Redmi 10X was spotted on the website of Chinese e-commerce store Tianyi telecommunications and pictures indicate that it looks very similar to the Redmi Note 9 Pro that was launched in India recently.

Previously, the phone was also listed on the Chinese regulatory authority website TENAA, revealing key specifications of the Redmi 10X. Let’s take a brief look at the rumoured specs of the phone.

Xiaomi Redmi 10X leaked specifications

Xiaomi Redmi 10X features a 6.5-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution display with a punch-hole notch cutout on the front. It is powered by the yet-unannounced MediaTek Helio G85 chip with an octa-core CPU and Mali-G52 GPU. This is supported by 6GB RAM and 128GB storage which could be the base variant of the phone. Details about other possible RAM and storage options aren’t available right now.

The Redmi 10X has a quad-camera setup on the back that consists of a primary 48MP camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens and two 2MP cameras. On the front, there’s a 13MP selfie camera housed within the notch cutout.

It features the basic set of connectivity features and comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and Type-C port for charging. The Redmi 10X is fitted with a 5,000mAh battery but there’s no word whether it supports fast charging. Given the high-capacity cells, it’s only logical for the phone to support some kind of fast charging solution but we’ll know about that as we near the official launch.

As per the listing, the Redmi 10X is expected to be priced starting at CNY 1,400 which roughly translates to around Rs 15,000. That puts it in the same segment as the Redmi Note 9 Pro series.

Currently, it’s not known whether the company has any plans to bring this phone to India. Having said that, India is currently under a complete lockdown due to the Coronavirus outbreak that’s taken its toll on people and businesses. The government has also prohibited e-commerce companies to deliver non-essential goods like mobile phones which is why many smartphone companies have refrained from launching new products in the country.

CS:GO and Team Fortress 2 source code leaked, creating panic in the gaming community

A source code leak from Valve from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2 has gone widely public, leading to concerns that the popular online multiplayer game could be subjected to hacks and cheats. Both communities fear that playing the game online will result in the spread of malicious viruses and malware. Community creators also shut down servers fearing exploits while mods on the Team Fortress 2 subreddit warned of possible vulnerabilities in in-game items.

However, Valve maintains that the leaked source code for CS: GO dates back to 2017, and was previously leaked in 2018. Valve said it has found no reason for players to be alarmed or avoid the games altogether.

Here is Valve’s statement reassuring players —

"We have reviewed the leaked code and believe it to be a reposting of a limited CS: GO engine code depot released to partners in late 2017, and originally leaked in 2018. From this review, we have not found any reason for players to be alarmed or avoid the current builds (as always, playing on the official servers is recommended for greatest security). We will continue to investigate the situation and will update news outlets and players if we find anything to prove otherwise. In the meantime, if anyone has more information about the leak, the Valve security page describes how best to report that information."

The CS: GO source code went public reportedly after a member of the Source Engine modding community, a group that attempts to make cancelled Valve projects playable, leaked the code. The source code reportedly led to the discovery of in-development Valve projects.

A bug in the iOS Mail app has allowed hackers to steal data from iPhones for years, Apple working on a fix

Apple is working on fixing a critical bug that has left more than half a billion iPhone users vulnerable to hacks. The exploit is triggered using malicious emails that runs a code in the default mail app that makes it possible to read, modify or delete messages.

The bug was apparently lurking for eight years and was discovered by researchers from ZecOps, a San-Francisco based mobile security company while it was investigating on a cyberattack on a client that took place in late 2019. According to a report by Reuters. The company said the bug has been exploited in at least six cybersecurity leaks previously.

Apple also acknowledged the existence of the bug in the mail app for iPhones and iPads. The company has also worked out a fix and will be rolling out to users in a forthcoming update to all devices Apple has sold.

Apple didn’t comment on the fact whether this hack can be triggered from a remote location and that it has been exploited by hackers previously. There is apparently evidence that a certain malicious program was making use of the vulnerability as far back as January 2018.

Victims of the hack would apparently receive a blank email message via the Mail app that would force it to crash and reset. This crash opens the door to let the hackers in, and steal data stored on the device like photos and contact details. The hack is present in the latest version of iOS as well. This is not the first iOS bug to have surfaced in recent years.
