Instagram will add a remembering banner for deceased users

With the COVID-19 death toll on the rise globally, there is a rising need to highlight social media accounts that are no longer active. Accounts of people who have deceased need to be highlighted. Instagram is working on something on these lines. The popular social network owned by Facebook is reportedly planning to launch an account memorialisation feature on its platform.

The feature was first spotted by Hong Kong-based hacker, Jane Manchun Wong, who shared an image of how the feature will look in practice on Twitter. Instagram will add a ‘Remembering’ banner right below the profile picture, and above the account name.

Instagram was reportedly working on this feature for quite some time now, and the process was hastened after the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We’ve been working on these updates for some time, though this is one — among others — that we’ve accelerated in light of COVID-19 to help support our community during a difficult time,” Instagram was quoted saying in a Buzzfeed article.

Upon opening a profile of a deceased user, Instagram will show a pop-up with the text - “This account has been memorialized. Memorialized accounts are a place to remember and celebrate someone’s life after they’ve passed away.”

Instagram’s Help Section has also been updated to reflect the account memorialisation feature. The help section explains that memorialised accounts will look the same as it did before, and will only appear to audiences who already follow the account. Nobody else will be allowed to log into a memorialised account or make changes to the photos or videos uploaded on the account.

Later, Instagram’s communications account on Twitter also acknowledged the existence of the feature in a reply to Jane’s Tweet.

“Yes, we’re making changes to help people identify if an Instagram account belongs to someone who has passed away. We’ll have more to share on this at a later time,” the tweet read.

Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020: How to participate

After PUBG Mobile, it looks like it’s Call of Duty: Mobile’s turn to host an Esports tournament. Called the Call of Duty: Mobile World Championship 2020, the tournament is said to offer in-game rewards as well as cash prizes. It will start on April 30 and is divided into two separate stages.

Stage 1: Open online qualifiers

The first stage is divided into four open online qualifiers that will be held on each weekend between April 30 and May 24. In order to be eligible for the qualifier, players will need to be ranked Veteran or higher.

Those eligible can sign up for the tournament in-game and once it goes live, the first 10 ranked matches that players play will earn them tournament points. These points are based on individual wins and their current rank. Higher ranks result in more points for each win. Players who reach 80 points within the first 10 ranked matches in any weekend will qualify for Stage 2.

Stage 2

Stage 2 will require qualified players to form a team among themselves and continue to play online matches. Nothing much is known beyond this, but players have been asked to check back on the company’s official pages as the tournament progresses to learn more about rules, cash prizes and how to watch,

Eligibility

As mentioned earlier, players need to have attained the rank of Veteran or higher in order to complete. It should be noted that players also need to be at least 18 years of age in order to partake and reside in an eligible region. Further, it is noted that players need to compete on an “eligible handset,” with no external device or attachment that modifies the game’s controls. This means that Bluetooth controllers, wired controllers, as well as a mouse and keyboard, cannot be used without the express consent of the Administration. Further, players cannot compete with a desktop emulator. Those found guilty run the risk of being disqualified from participating in any future Call of Duty: Mobile Tournaments. Activision also notes that official riles will be posted at a later date.

Rewards

Those you register will get an in-game reward for simply registering for the tournament, and will continue to get more in-game rewards as they earn tournament points. Those who qualify for Stage 2 will earn additional in-game rewards. The company notes it will offer new in-game items as rewards each week.

Hopefully, Activision will release more information about the tournament soon. In fact, Call of Duty: Mobile is expected to get a new map soon and it is not yet known if that map will be considered for the tournament. Thankfully, we shouldn't have to wait too long as the tournament is expected to start in one week.

Zoom 50 update released with several security improvements amidst public backlash

Zoom has released a 5.0 update to its popular video conferencing service with many security and privacy improvements that give the company some breathing space amidst public backlash. The Indian government even issued an advisory that states Zoom isn’t a safe platform for official communication and hence restricted its employees from using the app for official work.

Zoom’s latest update targets this outrage with reinforced security features like the support for AES 256-bit encryption, the ability to report a user and more. In a statement to the press, Oded Gal, CPO of Zoom said, “From our network to our feature set to our user experience, everything is being put through rigorous scrutiny. On the back end, AES 256-bit GCM encryption will raise the bar for securing our users’ data in transit. On the front end, I’m most excited about the Security icon in the meeting menu bar. This takes our security features, existing and new, and puts them front and centre for our meeting hosts. With millions of new users, this will make sure they have instant access to important security controls in their meetings.”

Zoom 5.0 update details

Zoom’s latest update brings more robust network support with new control options and a focus on improving the user experience. The update brings support for AES 256-bit GCM encryption standard that strengthens the security of data transmitted between calls making it secure from unauthorized access.

This new encryption technology is being rolled out to Zoom Meeting, Webinar and Phone data will be activated on May 30, after all accounts have been seeded the 5.0 update. Moreover, administrators can now choose to control which data centre is being used to route traffic to your Zoom meeting.

The new update also adds a dedicated security menu button in the video calling interface that groups together all the necessary security options. Zoom meeting hosts will also be able to report a user from Security settings and restrict participants from changing their log-in names.

Zoom users who own a Basic, education or a Pro account will now notice that the waiting room is enabled by default for hosts to keep participants ready to join the meeting. The update also activates meeting passwords by default and hosts can even modify the password complexity.

Call recordings stored on cloud servers can be accessed by hosts without any password but everyone else would require a password to access those recordings.

Zoom 5.0 also brings in support for organizations to link contacts across multiple accounts for people to easily search for meetings and chats.

Crash Bandicoot Mobile makes its way to Android devices, but you may not be able to play it yet

Crash Bandicoot was an iconic character associated with the original PlayStation Console back in the mid-’90s. Today, the remaster of the original trilogy along with the cart racing game, Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is available across all consoles. The only platform where Crash needed to launch officially is the smartphone. It looks like that dream is becoming a reality too. Crash Bandicoot Mobile is available for download via the Google Play Store in Malaysia only. There is no information on when the game will come to India.

The format of the game is that it is an endless runner, just like we’ve seen in games like Temple Run. Crash will run on his own, and players can tap for his spin attack, swipe up to jump, down to slide, and side to side to avoid obstacles.

‘King’ the studio behind Candy Crush has developed the game. The studio is owned by Activision Blizzard. The game's description reads, “In this new mobile episode, Dr Neo Cortex has dispatched mutagen henchmen across the multiverse to enslave all dimensions. With the help of his sister Coco, Crash must bash Cortex's minions back to their own dimensions!”

Some key levels like Temple Ruins, Lost City, Wumpa Island, and Turtle Woods are there in the game’s description. Levels will also feature hidden paths that lead to new levels, rewards, and challenges. If you search for Crash Bandicoot in the Google Play Store in India, then you will not see the game as it isn't available here. However, you will see a lot of Crash Bandicoot clone games. Don't be fooled by them. The game is also expected to launch on iOS but there is no information on when the game will hit iOS devices.

A fun fact is that Crash Bandicoot was developed by Naughty Dog. The studio went on to become a first-party Sony Studio and has published games like the Last of Us, the Uncharted franchise, and many more.
