Apple first ARM-based Mac to use 12-core 5nm processor

Rumours of Apple producing ARM-based Macs have been around for some time now, with Bloomberg originally reporting that Apple would roll them out by 2020/2021. Now another Bloomberg report is corroborating the earlier story, claiming that Apple is working on several chip designs, the first of which will be a 12-core processor fabricated on the 5nm process.

Currently, all of Apple’s laptops and desktop solutions use Intel as the primary processor, a move that has worked in and against Apple’s favour. Moving to Intel and the x86 platform helped Apple supercharge its machines at a time when the PowerPC processors were starting to lag behind. However, with Intel struggling to move past its 14nm process, showing any notable performance gains one generation after another, Apple finds itself in a tricky position once again. Moving to ARM processors of its own designs would help Apple move forward at the pace it wants to, without having to hold back a refresh just because a processor manufacturer could not deliver a product with enough improvement in its performance.

Bloomberg reports that the 12-core chip will be manufactured on the 5nm process and come with 8 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. In comparison, the 16-inch MacBook Pro runs on an Intel Core i9-9980, featuring 8 cores in total. However, core counts are not the only, or even a correct indicator of expected performance, especially when considering two wildly different architectures. A Geekbench score may also not be a reliable indicator of the kind of performance you can expect.

The problem with hailing ARM as the superior solution to Intel at this point is simple; all current ARM devices can only run a singular, or at most, dual instances of applications. The iPad Pro, which houses the A12x Bionic processor from Apple is heralded as the most powerful portable device from Apple in terms of what it can do. Artists have slowly been taking to the iPad Pro for content creation such as editing videos and photos or even making artwork or logos for commercial use. However, the apps on the iOS ecosystem may lack several features in comparison to their desktop counterparts due to the performance limitation that comes in when trying to use it the way you would a full-fledged application.

The other challenge with Apple moving to ARM’s chips would be the application ecosystem. It is possible that Apple might develop an emulator within which users would be able to run the current macOS x86-based applications, but it would be a while before we can expect all applications and games to move to the new ARM-based applications.

While it is likely that Apple won’t update its entire lineup with ARM-based processors, what is more, likely that machines like the MacBook Air or even the MacBook and slowly transition the more powerful machines over to ARM as well, as and when the application ecosystem develops. Currently, while there may not be a way to run Mac apps on iOS or vice-versa, Apple has made it a lot easier to port iOS and iPadOS apps to macOS thanks to Mac Catalyst. However, a reverse port may not be as easy.

Xiaomi may launch Redmi Band as the Mi Band 4C in Europe: Report

Xiaomi’s Mi Band 4 is already pretty affordable. But it looks like the company may soon launch an even more affordable wearable. According to a leak by Russian website, Xiaomishka.ru, the company is working on a new wearable called the Mi Band 4C. As per the report the device was spotted on WUV Rheinland’s website and sports the model number HMSH01GE. It was also noted that this model number previously appeared on the Bluetooth SIG website and was listed as the Redmi Band. This seems to suggest that the Mi Band 4C will actually be a rebranded version of the Redmi Band that was recently launched in China.

The Redmi Band packs a 1.08-inch colour display that is completely flat, unlike the Mi band 4 that has a slight curve to it. Further, and offers sleep tracking, heart-rate monitoring, and sedentary reminders to ensure that you keep moving. It is also tipped to offer a battery life of two weeks. Interestingly, the device does not rely on a charging cradle to charge. Instead, it comes with a standard USB Type-A port that plugs straight into a standard USB port. The device was launched at an introductory price of CNY 95 (approximately Rs 1,000) and will later retail for CNY 99. It is not yet known if Xiaomi plans to launch the Redmi Band (or the Mi Band 4C) in India.

In related news, details about the Xiaomi Redmi 10X were leaked. The device was listed on Chinese e-commerce store Tianyi Telecommunications, and images suggest that it would look very similar to the Redmi Note 9 Pro that was recently released in India. The listing suggests that the smartphone will come with a 6.5-inch FHD+ display with a punch-hole design for the front camera. It is tipped to be powered by a MediaTek Helio G85 SoC. The variant listed on the website offered 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, but it is quite possible that it would be available in additional variants. At the back is a quad-camera setup with a 48MP+8MP+2MP+2MP setup, while at the front is a single 13MP unit. You can check out more details about the phone here.

Epson launches ME Office 535, the smallest all-in-one inkjet, at Rs 5,999

Epson has launched what it calls the smallest all-in-one inkjet printer in the world – the Epson ME Office 535 – from its ME Office series. Epson has designed the Epson ME Office 535 to have a low compact footprint and to be environmentally friendly, as well as of course, a low cost per page. The ME Office 535 ultra-compact printer has been priced at Rs. 5,999.

Speaking on the launch of printer, Mr. Samba Moorthy, Division Head – Sales & Marketing, Epson India, said:

“Last year, Epson committed to grow our business printing market by lowering the cost of printing for our customers through printer models with extremely low cost per page. This year, we reinforce that commitment by expanding our low running cost models to offer even more capabilities – from space savings, to even lower cost per page for monochrome and colour document printing. We are confident that no matter what our customers’ business printing needs are, there is now a perfect Epson inkjet for them to reduce their running costs.”

According to Epson, the Epson DURABrite Ultra pigment ink used by its latest printers produces ultra-sharp text that is comparable to laser quality and better grayscale graphic prints on plain paper than laser printers. Prints will apparently also be smudge, fade and water-resistant. In addition to plain paper, the printers can also print on a wide range of media that laser printers cannot – such as photo paper and specialty media.

The Epson ME Office 535 is called the “small–in-one”, and has apparently been specifically designed to help users conserve space with its ultra-compact and attractive-looking chassis. Compared to its predecessor, the Epson Stylus TX220, the Epson ME Office 535 uses 19% fewer components, and is an incredible 39% smaller in size and 24% smaller in footprint, according to Epson.
