Most Huawei phones may get updated to support contact tracing: Report

It looks like most of Huawei phones will be able to run the contact-tracing system that Google’s developing with Apple. According to a report by Techradar, eligible phones from the brand will be updated to support the new system. These phones will include those devices before Google was barred from conducting business with Huawei by the US government.

This means that devices like the Huawei P30 and the Huawei P30 Pro will most likely get the update, but the Huawei Mate 30 series may not get it. However, the company has not confirmed which phones will be updated and how far back the compatibility will go.

To recall, Apple recently announced that it will be working closely with Google to create a contact-tracing system to help governments and health care agencies track and reduce the spread of the virus. However, the company claims the privacy and security will be central to its design. As per the company’s announcement, the first step of the system is planned to be introduced in May. As part of this step, both companies will release APIs that will enable interoperability between Android and iOS devices using apps from public health authorities. These apps will be available to download via the respective app stores.

The second step would include the building of a broader Bluetooth-based contact tracing. This step will be implemented sometime in the coming months. The company claims that this would be a more robust solution than an API and should allow for more people to participate if they choose to opt-in. The company notes that privacy, transparency and consent will be key aspected in the system.

So people will be able to drop in at any time.

Messenger Rooms will hold up to 50 people with no time limit so you can drop in and spend time with friends, family and people who share your interests. You can discover Rooms from your Facebook friends, Groups and Events at the top of News Feed. pic.twitter.com/Fmx2VPjmMX

— Facebook (@Facebook) April 24, 2020

The announcement comes at a very ideal time as people from around the world are stuck at home due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. The move should allow more people to connect and stay in touch with friends and family.

During the ongoing lockdown, the demand for communication platforms is at an all-time high. Initially, most business and educational institutes turned towards Zoom, a video conferencing app. However, the privacy aspect of the app from brought to question after reports suggest that the app was leaking data to Facebook. However, the company has since apologised and claims that the app has been fixed since. However, it was later reported that the Zoom credentials of over 50,000 users were being sold online.

Mumbai-based developer, Inscripts, seems to have created an Indian answer to Zoom in the form of Say Namaste. The platform is currently in Beta and should launch officially in the next few weeks. The company has also submitted builds of the app to Google and Apple in order to be listed in their respective app stores. The company has also said that it plans to ensure privacy and security by adding features such as two-factor authentication ad email indexing for businesses. The company, as well as the government, have reiterated the fact that this is not the official video conferencing app of the Indian government.

Google Meet finally rolls out Zoom-like 16 grid video conferencing layout

As we head towards the end of the lockdown, it’s still very clear that working from home has become a part and parcel of this new existence. And owing to that Goggle has changed Hangouts and renamed it Google Meet. The company has made a conscious push towards Google Meet being the premier video conferencing app. Google has rolled out Meet to G suite users and expects it to take on companies like Zoom.

As we reported earlier, Google Meet was planning on adopting a Zoom-like grid system that allows 16 people to join in on the call simultaneously. The number of people on a single call was limited to only four but the company has now extended that and allowed 16 people to join in on a single call. This is ideal for office meeting and larger conferences. The company has also delivered on its promise of better call quality in terms of video conferencing. Users can also just share a Chrome tab rather than share their entire screen. Other features include a low-light mode that uses AI to automatically adjust the visibility during dimly lit situations or environments. The low-light mode is currently being rolled out and will be available rather soon.

Google has also ensured that background noise will now be filtered out using noise cancellation techniques and such. This particular option will begin rolling out in the next few weeks to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers, starting with web users. Mobile users will be receiving the update a little later.

If you’re looking for more video conferencing apps that you can sue during this time, you can check this handy guide out.

New Apple iOS text bomb can cause your iPhone or iPad to crash

It looks like Apple iOS users are at the mercy of another ‘text bomb’ that is said to crash iPhones and iPads. The ‘bomb’ consists of a string of text that causes the OS to crash or become unresponsive to touch input. Reports suggest that people have started sharing For obvious reasons, we will not be sharing the text here, but it consists of the Italian Flag emoji and a bunch of characters from the Sindhi language. According to a report by 9to5mac, when an iPhone, iPad Mac or even an Apple Watch receives a notification with this text string, it causes problems mentioned above,

Facebook releases new video calling app called Messenger Rooms

As we head towards the end of the lockdown in India, it looks like companies aren’t slowing down when it comes to releasing new products. Up next on the video calling bandwagon is Facebook. The social media giant has just released a video calling app that will include up to 50 people at a time with no known time limits. Known as Messenger Rooms, this looks to be an alternative to apps like Zoom and Google Meet. Zoom has seen its fair share of controversy and Google Meet is basically a refurbished Hangouts app.

Messenger Rooms gives Facebook members the option to create public or private video chatrooms that can hold up to 50 people for an unlimited amount of time. Their closest rival,  Zoom, calls can hold up to 100 participants for 40 minutes. You can even join a Messenger Room if you don’t have a Facebook account. This is a very rare move for the company. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a live stream regarding apps like Zoom, “A lot of the time that I’ve spent on this over the last few weeks as we’ve been building this out and getting ready to ship has been on privacy, security, integrity reviews, and how do we make sure that a lot of the use cases that have been problematic around Zoom are not going to be things that are replicated here.”

Facebook is also adding a live streaming feature on Facebook and on Instagram. Called Live With That, users can invite other people to stream with them. They also recently jumped into the world of gaming with Facebook Gaming. You can check that out here.

Google releases third Android 11 Developer Preview

Google has started rolling out the third Developer Preview of Android 11 to Pixel devices. The update brings with it security patches for April and runs Google Play Services version 20.12.14. As always, we recommend staying away from flashing developer preview versions of any OS on your primary device.

According to Google, this update offers bug fixes and a number of productivity improvements. There’s nothing here to really understand what the third update contains. However, given that Developer Previews are usual “alpha” versions of the OS, this just seems like an update geared towards making the operating system stable for running apps.

Google usually runs a public beta program for its upcoming mobile operating system, once the OS reaches a certain level of stability. Even the public beta builds are not advisable to be used on a daily driver since commonly used apps can often have compatibility issues.

If you’re already running a developer build on your Pixel device, you can simply upgrade via the OTA route. If you prefer a clean install, you could also just flash a factory image which can be had from the link here.

The excitement around Android 11 is understandable. The next iteration of Google’s Mobile operating system is set to bring some very exciting features to users. For starters, there’s going to be native screen recording built into Android, along with the ability to mute notifications during video playback. Android 11 will also bring the ability to bring back notifications that were automatically dismissed.

The first developer preview of Android 11 was released in February, with the second one coming in March and the third in April. Android 11 was expected to be announced at I/O this year, but Google had earlier said that they are cancelling the event altogether due to the Coronavirus. Unlike some other brands who are still holding launches and announcements over Livestream, Google I/O 2020 will not be streamed either.
