The iPhone 12 launch might get postponed due to mass production delays

The COVID-19 pandemic will delay the launch of iPhone 12 this year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The report claims that Apple is a month behind in iPhone 12 production, which might lead to Apple pushing back the launch date beyond the usual first Tuesday of September, owing to disruptions in the supply chain. The report claims Apple has cut back estimates for July-December by as much as 20 per cent.

Apple is expected to expand the iPhone lineup to four smartphones this year — A 5.4-inch model, a 6.7-inch model, and two 6.1-inch variants. The iPhone 11 series was launched in three variants that feature 5.1-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch displays.

This is not the first report to claim Apple has cut back on production. Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said iPhone 12 production is a month behind. He said since Apple executives cannot fly to China right now, the company has shifted the engineering verification process to remote operations. However, factories are still taking more time than under normal circumstances.

Having said that, a delay in mass production does not necessarily mean Apple will postpone the scheduled launch date. It could very likely be a repeat of what happened with the iPhone X or the iPhone XR where the phones were announced in September but customers had to wait for a month to get their hands on them.

iPhone 12 expected specs and features

As mentioned before, Apple is working on releasing four iPhone 12 models this year. Leaked design of the iPhone 12 hints at an iPad Pro-like flat-edge chassis and there are rumours that all the iPhone 12 modems will have 5G support, although only the high-end iPhone 12 models could get support for mmWave while the rest may only get support for sub-6GHz bands.

Furthermore, a purportedly leaked image claims the iPhone 12 Pro variants will pack the same LiDAR scanner sensor seen on this year’s iPad Pro that helps in improving AR apps. The iPhone 12 models will also be powered by the upcoming Apple A14 processor which is reportedly being made on a 5nm TSMC process.

The iPhone 12 Pro models (that's what we're assuming they will be called) will retain the triple-camera design but with a 64MP sensor in the primary camera along with support for all three lenses in Night Mode. Two of the models are expected to come with 6GB RAM while the other two are rumoured to pack 4GB RAM.

The Last of Us Part 2 has a new release date and its sooner than you think

When The Last of Us Part 2 was delayed “indefinitely” fans of the franchise were deeply saddened. The game, which was originally set to release in February 2020, was delayed to May 29 because the developers wanted to give players a polished experience. As Shigeru Miyamoto said, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” However, in April it was announced that The Last of Us Part 2 was delayed yet again and not due to any technical reasons but due to the ongoing pandemic. Naughty Dog released a statement saying that they wanted to ensure the game reaches everyone, and since a lot of the world is in some form of lockdown, getting physical copies to them would be impossible.

Now, Sony has revealed on the PlayStation Blog that The Last of Us Part 2 will release on June 19. That is in 52 days as of writing this article. Less than 2 months away. Sony’s other high profile exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima which was scheduled to release on June 26 has been pushed back to July 17 to give the Last of Us Part 2 some breathing space.

Hermen Hulst, Head of Worldwide Studios, SIE took to the PlayStation Blog and said, “As our teams at Sony Interactive Entertainment and Worldwide Studios approach development milestones and confront a world changed by COVID-19, we find ourselves having to adapt to today’s ever-changing environment. Amidst some disruptions to our working styles, we wanted to provide an update to PlayStation gamers who are eager to learn when our next exclusive titles will arrive on PlayStation 4. As we begin to see an ease in the global distribution environment, I am pleased to confirm that The Last of Us Part II will arrive on June 19. And Ghost of Tsushima will follow on July 17.”

Even though Hermen Hulst sights distribution as the issue, we aren't entirely sure that was the reason The Last of Us Part 2 got a release date. On April 27, a massive Last of Us Part 2 leak hit the internet and while we aren't going to go over the details here, it is safe to say that the leak has major spoilers that will ruin the plot for anyone interested in the game.

Xiaomi MIUI 12 announced: Here are 5 new features that make it worth your attention

MIUI 12 has officially been announced by Xiaomi alongside the Mi 10 Youth Edition. The company’s custom interface is based on Android 10 and brings in a lot of changes to the overall experience of using a Xiaomi phone.

Do note, however, that this is the Chinese version of MIUI 12 that has been announced by the company and there’s currently no word when the global version of the MIUI 12 ROM will be announced and subsequently rolled-out. Having said that, the MIUI is fairly popular in India, in part owing to the company’s position in the smartphone market. In 2019, Xiaomi had claimed that there were over 80 million monthly active users of it’s UI in India which is substantial for the company to have a great focus on.

MIUI 12 comes with an updated Dark Mode 2.0, camera app, new always-on display options, advanced privacy features and more. Here are five new features of MIUI 12 that make it worth your attention.

All-new visual design

MIUI 12 features revamped visual design that’s minimal with new animations that seem to make the experience smooth and fast. More UI elements have been grouped and that makes it look cleaner.

Then there’s the Dark Mode 2.0 which brings standard dark mode features along with additions like automatic brightness, high colour saturation, reducing contrast and font adjustments to reduce strain and make viewing more comfortable.

The system animations have also been redesigned and the company claims it to be on par with iOS. MIUI also brings new live wallpapers inspired from Earth, Moon and Mars and new always-on display widgets.

Android 10 gestures are here

MIUI 12 adopts Google’s Android 10 style navigation gestures which are more like Apple’s implementation on iOS. Previously, though the company offered gesture-based navigation, it was its own implementation rather than Google’s.

Custom button layout in the Camera app

Xiaomi has tweaked the default camera app and the layout can now be customized to support up to 10 functions. This means that you will be able to keep your favourite photography modes in the camera layout while hiding other rarely used modes in a different inline menu.

New multitasking features

MIUI 12 brings new multi-tasking features such as the universal window mode, picture-in-picture and more. Users will now be able to put apps in minimized mode or can keep them hovering in picture-in-picture mode. This seems to be a system-wide functionality, however, whether all apps can be used in such a way isn’t confirmed at the moment.

Mi Health and fitness features

MIUI 12 comes with advanced health monitoring tools that will help users keep their well-being in check while giving them an analysis of different activities such as running and sleeping. Xiaomi says that with this MIUI update, the system can keep an accurate track of their sleep cycle by just keeping the phone under their pillow. It also claims that with all its sensors combined, the MIUI 12 can track and analyse data with as close as 96 per cent accuracy.

Nintendo admits 16 lakh accounts hacked, heres how users in India can be safe

If you own a Nintendo Switch and have a Nintendo account, we’ve got some bad news for you guys. Nintendo has just admitted that 160,000 user accounts have been hacked and had their login IDs and passwords stolen. The company is notifying users who have been affected by the hack. In an effort to curb the breach, Nintendo has apologies and disabled logging into your Nintendo Account through a Nintendo Network ID. It is believed that this was where the hackers got into the system.

The company also issued a statement that said, “This time, login IDs and password information were obtained illegally by some means other than our service, a phenomenon that seems to have been made by impersonating login to Nintendo Network ID (NNID) from around the beginning of April. We also confirm that there was an illegal login to some ‘Nintendo accounts’ via NNID using this impersonation login.” This goes on to confirm that it was indeed the Nintendo Network ID that was hacked. Nintendo is looking at resetting passwords sequentially on accounts that may have been hacked.

The company has also released a statement asking users to reset their passwords. The statement read, “Please reset your password the next time you use it. In that case, please avoid reusing the password that you have already used for other services. If you have already logged into your Nintendo account via NNID, please log in with your Nintendo account email address/login ID after the next login.”

Even though Nintendo does not have much of a presence in India as compared to Sony and Microsoft, the gaming giant is much beloved by gamers worldwide and users in India are no different. Many gamers have bought Nintendo Switch’s on the grey market while some have essentially bought the system abroad. And, the one good thing about the Nintendo E-store is that you can actually change your country of origin and check out all the games on offer. As Switch owners, we can safely say that the US store and Japanese store have some of the best games and tons of demos you can try out as well. So, if you do have an account on Nintendo, as Indian users, what we can do is basically reset the account and change any and all passwords associated with it, just to be safe.

The system has actually gone on to become a mega-hit as it has sold more than 52 million units since launch. But, if you’re a more of a Sony fan, you can check out the best games on the PlayStation 4, right here. Or, if you’re a gamer who owns all three systems including the PC, you’ll want to check out the mega list of games we’ve got, right here.
