Microsoft HoloLens 2 coming soon to parts of Europe, Scandinavia and Asia

Microsoft HoloLens is a device that can deliver a true mixed reality experience, bringing in objects from the virtual world into ours to create a unique experience. We at Digit have experienced a number of immersive demos using the Microsoft HoloLens. From exploring key landmarks around the world while sitting in a conference room to watching a video game world come to life in front of us on a simple table, the experiences are breathtaking. However, the HoloLens is an expensive headset, and thus it has found space for itself in industrial applications. The HoloLens 2 is currently available in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, the U.K., and the United States.

Microsoft has announced that the HoloLens 2 will be available in the fall of 2020 in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

According to Microsoft, “HoloLens 2, a self-contained holographic computer, offers the most comfortable and immersive mixed-reality experience available, enhanced by the reliability, security, and scalability of the cloud and artificial intelligence services from Microsoft”.

When compared to the first generation headset, immersion has improved in the new HoloLens 2. The company has more than doubled the field of view while retaining the industry-standard 47 pixels per degree of sight. The device consists of a new display that’s more technically sophisticated but draws less power. Underpinning the device is a new time-of-flight sensor, inbuilt AI and semantic understanding logic, and eye-tracking sensors. HoloLens 2 enables direct manipulation of holograms with real-life instinctual interactions. Log-ins happen with the help of Windows Hello integration.

According to Microsoft, comfort levels have also improved thanks to the use of light carbon-fibre material and a new mechanism for wearing it without readjusting the device. A new dial-in fit system makes the device more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The American software corporation believes that HoloLens 2 becomes more capable when combined with existing and new Azure services. It’s also supplemented by Microsoft’s mixed reality applications like Dynamics 365, Remote Assist, Dynamics 365 Layout, and the new Dynamics 365 Guides applications.

OnePlus 8 Pro X-Ray colour filter in the camera will be disabled in a future update

Recently, it was reported that the OnePlus 8 Pro’s colour camera feature could see through some plastic objects and some clothes as well. The internet dubbed this as the camera’s X-Ray ability and it appears to work when you photograph black objects made of very thin plastic or even clothes. The resulting image appears to show what's underneath, however, it’s not a true X-Ray effect going on here. The infra-red sensor on the OnePlus 8 Pro seems to be picking up IR radiation from the underside layer of thin materials. OnePlus has now taken to the Chinese social networking website, Weibo to say that the colour camera feature will be disabled in a future update and will return once the issue has been fixed. Since the Weibo post is in Chinese, we are relying on the Android Police report of the same.

So, why is the X-Ray like see-through happening on certain materials? Well, the IR sensor is possibly picking up on the infrared radiation that bounces off practically everything in this world (also referred to as heat radiation). When the materials used are very thin (like a T-shirt), the infrared radiation is able to travel through it, registering itself on an IR camera with ease. This is the basic principle of how thermal cameras work and are able to see through smoke in the case of a fire. This new discovery could spell potential privacy and security issues. While it may not be possible for OnePlus to fix this issue at a hardware level, they might be able to fix it through a software update that limits the IR sensor from picking up specific wavelengths of the infrared spectrum. You can read more about it here.

In other OnePlus news, It looks like the OnePlus true wireless earbuds could launch soon. There is no exact date or launch window, but it is speculated the OnePlus true wireless earbuds could launch alongside the rumoured OnePlus Z smartphone. Both are speculated to be unveiled in June. You can read more about it here.

The OnePlus 8 is all set to go on sale in India at the end of May and you can read all about that here.

OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T receiving OxygenOS 1033 update with fix for black screen issue and April security patch

OnePlus announced it will be ending the OxygenOS Open Beta program for OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T, but promised the smartphones will keep receiving stable updates in the future. And like clockwork, both phones are receiving a new update that fixes a number of bugs and brings the latest security patch.

The version dubbed OxygenOS 10.3.3. is rolling out to OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T users. The update contains the April 2020 security patch, fix for a black screen issue during gaming, along with VoWiFi support for Reliance Jio in India. The update also patches the GMS package to the latest version.

Notably, the stable update rolling out is missing a few features that were present in the last Open Beta. That includes an improved one-handed mode in the Phone app along with account sync for Zen Mode. As a result, you might end up losing a few features going from Open Beta to the stable build right now.

The update is rolling out to OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T users in batches. Head over to Settings, About Phone and Software Updates to see if the update is available. If not, wait for a few days or simply update it via the Play Store.

In other OnePlus news, the company could launch the OnePlus true wireless earphones along with the OnePlus Z in July. You can read more about that story here.

Indian government tones down mandatory stand on Aarogya Setu, installing app is now voluntary in workplaces

The Indian government has changed its stance on Aarogya Setu and installing the contact tracing app is now voluntary as opposed to being mandatory, earlier. As per the new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs for the fourth phase of the lockdown, companies have been asked to ensure the installation of Aarogya Setu by employees on a “best effort basis”. Moreover, local authorities can now only “advise” people to install the app instead of forcing them to download it.

“With a view to ensuring safety in offices and workplaces, employers on best effort basis should ensure that Aarogya Setu is installed by all employees having compatible mobile phones,” the latest order reads.

Additionally, “District authorities may advise individuals to install the Aarogya Setu application on compatible mobile phones and regularly update their health status on the app. This will facilitate timely provision of medical attention to those individuals who are at risk,” it adds.

India’s own contact tracing app was announced on April 2 and has been in the limelight ever since due to the immense amount of personal data it collects when any user registers on it. The app has been scrutinized by privacy advocates and security researchers for putting user’s personal data at risk and many civic organisations and individuals have either directly or indirectly called out the government over its previous order which made the app mandatory.

In cities like Noida and Greater Noida, district authorities were enforcing the government’s directive to make Aarogya Setu a mandatory app to have on your smartphone and people failing to comply could be criminally prosecuted by the local authorities. The Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) challenged this order in Noida and a plea petition was filed in the Kerala High Court to make it voluntary.

The Kerala High Court held a hearing on May 12 where it stated that the petition raised valid concerns and directed Central government to respond to the issues pertaining to the coercive imposition of Aarogya Setu in India. As a result, the latest advisory makes it clear that the installation of the app isn’t mandatory and authorities can only advise citizens to download it.

Having said that, the app is still mandatory for travelling via railways, at airports and even for government employees. Aarogya Setu has also been released for JioPhones that runs on KaiOS.
