Xiaomi could launch Redmi AirDots S true wireless earbuds in India on May 26

Xiaomi has revealed that it is going to announce a new audio product on May 26 under its Redmi sub-brand. While the details have been kept under wraps, a teaser image posted by the company hints at the launch of the Redmi AirDots S true wireless earphones in India.

A tweet from Xiaomi India MD, Manu Kumar Jain revealed the launch date of a new category under the Redmi brand. Apart from the tweet, an event page has gone live on the Xiaomi India website teasing a bunch of features of the upcoming audio product. This includes wireless Bluetooth connectivity, long battery life, water and sweat resistance, reduced latency and touch controls. All these features are indicative of the Redmi AirDots S TWS earbuds and Xiaomi will likely release these in India as the new affordable true wireless audio product.

Notably, Xiaomi recently announced its first TWS earphones in India-- the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 priced at Rs 4,499. The Redmi AirDots S TWS could be much more affordable as such, given its price in China which is CNY 99.9 which translates to around Rs 1,000 by direct conversion.

Xiaomi Redmi AirDots S features

Xiaomi Redmi AirDots S offers a true wireless listening experience and connects to your Xiaomi smartphone in a jiffy. The left and right earbuds can be used either in mono or binaural modes, meaning that a single earbud can also be used at any given time. The AirDost S is fairly lightweight with both the earbuds weighing in under 10 grams.

The AirDots S comes with Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity for a robust and smooth connection. These pair of earbuds are equipped with 7.2mm audio drivers with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) noise reduction technology that is capable of reducing background noise while you’re on a call.

AirDots S support touch controls and can be used to control music playback, receive calls and use the phone’s voice assistant. It works with both Apple Sire and Google Voice Assistant. The earbuds are also IPX4 rated, making it waterproof. Though the charging case isn’t water-resistant.

These earphones come with a carrying case that doubles up as a charging unit. Xiaomi claims that the earbuds can last for around 4 hours on a single charge and up to 12 hours when used with the charging case.

In other Xiaomi news, the company could also launch the RedmiBook 14 in June. You can read more about that story here.

Amazon enters food delivery business in India with Amazon Food to take on Zomato and Swiggy

Amazon Food, the food delivery service of India’s major e-commerce platform Amazon has gone live in some parts of Bengaluru. The new venture goes heads up against the likes of Swiggy and Zomato who’ve been dominating the online food delivery business for a long time and have seen their fair share of wins and losses, especially during this Coronavirus outbreak.

The food delivery business has taken a massive hit with the on-going nation-wide lockdown, with Swiggy even announcing 1,100 job cuts in an attempt to downsize and cut back on surmounting losses in the wake of COVID-19 storm. That’s why Amazon entry into the food delivery business is important because it can give a definitive boost to the whole ecosystem with its large scale user base.

Having said that, Amazon Food is currently live only in four areas of Bengaluru. There are, Haralur (560048), Marathahalli (560037), Whitefield (560066) and Bellandur (560103), with more cities being added in the next few weeks, according to a person who told this to The Economic Times.

“We are launching Amazon Food in select Bangalore pin codes allowing customers to order from handpicked local restaurants and cloud kitchens that pass our high hygiene certification bar. We are adhering to the highest standards of safety to ensure our customers remain safe while having a delightful experience,” an Amazon India spokesperson said in a statement to media.

What is Amazon Food?

Amazon Food is the e-commerce giant’s online food delivery service that’s currently operational only is some parts of Bengaluru. It will go live and expand to other cities in the coming weeks, adding more restaurants to its catalogue.

There’s no separate app you need to download to use Amazon Food and you will see a banner on the Amazon shopping app to access the list of restaurants delivering pre-prepared food to your region, once the service goes live in your city.

There’s no known schedule for when the service will be operational in other cities across India but it’s expected that Amazon will roll it out for everyone once it is able to get restauranters onboard its new food delivery platform.

How to place an order on Amazon Food?

Amazon Food is currently live in four pin-codes of Bengaluru-- 560048, 560037, 560066 and 560103. The food delivery service is expected to go live in other cities in the coming weeks. Here’s how to place an order on Amazon Food.

Open Amazon shopping app and scroll down to the “Just Launched” banner.

Tap on Amazon Food.

Select a restaurant from the list to browse through different food items.

Select the product and add it to the cart.

Tap on View Cart and Proceed to Checkout.

You’ll see the exact details of the order including the price breakdown.

Go ahead and pay for the order. And that’s all you need to do.

The interface of Amazon Food is similar to the Amazon shopping experience and users can order food from the app without any hassle. Currently, Amazon is offering free delivery of online food orders along with a promotional 20 per cent cashback. Once the service is able to attract a large user base, it’s expected that delivery charges will be introduced.

Apart from the four areas the service is available in, there’s no word when can we expect Amazon Food to launch in other cities. However, we’ll keep an eye out for whenever a wider roll-out happens.

Realme Smart TV up for blind order ahead of May 25 launch

We may not know all the details about the upcoming Realme TV, but it looks like those interested can order the TV. Called a blind order, customers interested need to pay Rs 2000 before May 24. According to the Realme website, “realme TV buyer will receive a Rs 500 off coupon on every single order above Rs 5000 which will be credited to the account on 1st June”.

What is the Realme Smart TV blind order?

Apart from the above Rs 500 benefit, the blind order ensures 100% chance for a customer to purchase the TV in advance. The customer will need to login and pay the Rs 2000 on realme’s India website. The Rs 500 coupon will be sent in the account automatically on June 1.

Realme Smart TV specifications

A few of the specifications of the upcoming Realme TV have been listed on the company’s website. The Realme Smart TV boasts of slim bezels to give viewers an immersive viewing experience. The TV also boasts of “Chroma Boost Picture Engine” and we will have to wait for more details on what this engine does. However, a very interesting specification highlighted is the 400 nits of brightness on the TV. This means that the TV could support HDR.

Moving on, under the hood, the Realme TV is powered by the MediaTek 64-bit quad-core processor with ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali 470 GPU. The TV also claims to have 24W stereo sound with 4 speakers. 24W sound overall isn’t much considering most TVs come with 20W of sound, to begin with. 24W in 4 speakers would mean each speaker gets 6W of sound output. It is highly unlikely that each speaker has 24W of output, but we will have to wait and watch.

There is also an image that says, “Hey, turn on my Realme Smart TV” hinting at voice assistant support which we think means that the TV will run on the Android TV platform with support for the Google Assistant.

New OnePlus TV could launch in 2020, remote control spotted on Bluetooth SIG

It looks like OnPlus is set to refresh the OnePlus TV in its 2020 avatar. According to 9to5Google, “two new OnePlus devices were listed with the Bluetooth SIG, using the same “1+ LED TV” and “1+ Remote Control” names last year. Interestingly, where the Bluetooth listing for the OnePlus TV that launched last year showed 39 different model numbers, today’s listing simply offers one — “55UA0A00.” So, it looks like the TV will have a 55-inch display, which seems to be the premium size of TVs for consumers in India. In the past year, the 43-inch and 55-inch TV sizes have seen growth with the larger than 55-inch screen size seeing slightly less growth. Other information from the listing suggests that the TV will use an updated MediaTek chip but it isn't clear as to which chip this is. It also looks like the remote control will get a redesign.

When OnePlus launched the OnePlus TV in India, one of its weakest elements was the remote control with its unergonomic design and awkwardly placed volume rocker. It looks like OnePlus is working at rectifying this and redesigning the remote control.

When OnePlus launched the OnePlus Q1 and Q1 Pro in 2019, the two TVs came with the same panel, features, and remote control. The only difference in the two was that the Q1 Pro came with the unique spine-like tabletop stand and a sliding out soundbar whereas the Q1 lacked the sliding soundbar (but still had decent speakers) and the tabletop stand had to be purchased separately.

The OnePlus TV that launched last year ran on the Android TV platform and came with a bunch of nifty features that one could access using the smartphone companion app. If you are in the market to pick up a 55-inch 4K TV you can check out our list of best 55-inch 4K TVs here.
