Apple caught in Siri recordings controversy again after whistleblower writes scathing letter to authorities
A former Apple contractor who blew the whistle on the Cupertino-based tech company listening to user’s Siri recordings went public to protest the lack of action taken against Apple. In a letter sent to all European data protection agencies, Thomas le Bonniec, the whistleblower said “It is worrying that Apple (and undoubtedly not just Apple) keeps ignoring and violating fundamental rights and continues their massive collection of data,” according to report by The Guardian.
The whistleblower who worked as a contractor for Apple used to transcribe Siri user recordings in English and French until he quit in 2019 due to ethical concerns about his work.
Following the allegations, Apple promised to bring about big changes to its data collection policy. The iPhone maker promised it will no longer collect Siri recordings by default, and users will be able to opt-in to share recordings with Apple. Apple further said only Apple employees will be privy to these audio samples and the company will not outsource transcription of the recordings to third-party contractors.
“We realise we have not been fully living up to our high ideals,” Apple had said in a statement at the time. Eventually, the company rolled out software updates to make the collection of Siri user requests an opt-in feature and to even delete the recordings Apple has stored.
However, Le Bonniec maintained Apple never really faced legal consequences for the time it was collecting user data without their explicit consent, in violation of European data protection laws.
Ireland Data Protection Commissioner takes noticeIn a reaction to the letter sent by Le Bonniec, Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) has been in contact with Apple, according to a report by Reuters.
“The DPC engaged with Apple on this issue when it first arose last summer and Apple has since made some changes,” Graham Doyle, Deputy Commissioner at the Irish DPC, said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
However, the commissioner also followed up with Apple after the letter was received and said responses are awaited. The report claims the European Data Protection Board is working on chalking up guidelines for voice assistant technologies.

Vodafone Idea Rs 98 add-on prepaid recharge offers users 12GB data in select circles
If you are looking to add more data to your prepaid plan, then there is good news for you. Vodafone Idea has revised the amount of data they are giving with its Rs 98 add-on prepaid recharge. Earlier, the Rs 98 add-on would give users 6GB of data with a validity of 28 days. Now the plan gives users 12 GB of data for the same validity. As spotted by OnlyTech, “upgraded data offerings were only in select circles namely Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Delhi, Mumbai, and UP East”. We, however, recommend you check the availability in your circle before jumping on the data recharge. There is no daily data cap and users have 28 days to use the 12GB of data that is a part of the plan.
Other data plans that are a part of the Vodafone add-ons are the Rs 16 plan which gives users 1GB of data and a validity of 24 hours and also the Rs 48 plan which gives users 3GB of data and a validity of 28 days. It looks like there is room for some more plans between Rs 48 and Rs 98, once the Rs 98 plan giving 12GB data becomes available in more circles. You can check out Vodafone's add-on plans here. You can also check out the recently updated Vodafone Rs 29 plan here.

The company says that it will be made possible through the Vodafone Idea Smart Connect retailer app which allows retailers to recharge without the need for them to hand over their phone to the customer. Instead, the customer or retailer can speak out the 10-digit mobile number and the Google Voice-enabled feature should be able to capture the command. You can read more about it here. Google will add sleep tracking and night notes to Digital Wellbeing app with the option to opt out
Google made a big push for digital well-being with the launch of Android 9 Pie, and over the years the usage tracking feature is now available across all smartphones regardless of the segment and price range and the UI they are running on with new abilities like Focus Mode. With Android 11 coming up, Google is set to revamp Digital Well-being with more features, specifically for tracking your sleep habits.
A teardown of the beta version of the Digital Wellbeing app by XDA-Developers has revealed major new features, the most notable of which is the ability to track sleep habits. The feature will rely on the built-in Google Clock app and the phone’s motion sensors to determine how well you are sleeping. Furthermore, the app tracks the apps you use frequently in bed.
Speaking of tracking, Google will also give you the option to opt-out of daily usage tracking which tracks the number of times you unlock the phone, the number of notifications you receive and the apps you use.
An interesting new addition is a feature called Night Notes. It’s unclear as to what its goal is, but going by the name, it could be a way to jot down a thought you may get in the middle of the night. This feature is linked to another app, according to XDA-Developers, which has not been released by Google yet.
