Microsoft hasnt forgotten about Skype after all, app to get new features soon

With Microsoft Teams becoming the software of choice for people working from home, Skype is all but forgotten. Microsoft acquired the video calling service for $8.5 billion in October 2011, yet while the new Teams app keeps receiving new features to accommodate the surge in usage since the COVID-19 pandemic, Skype has taken a back seat. The app is also pre-installed in all Windows builds these days, and sure enough, the app saw a surge in active users since the pandemic took full effect.

Microsoft now claimed it is eager to invest more in Skype and work on adding new features, regardless of its plans with Team, which just so happens to be the fastest-growing business app for the Redmond giant.

The company shared that Skype has passed 40 million daily active users with a 70 percent increase month-over-month with Skype-to-Skype calling minutes seeing a rise of 220%. A big reason for the surge is the fact that Microsoft Teams is still part of the company’s offering for business users which requires a monthly subscription to Office365, now renamed to Microsoft365.

However, the daily surge in users may get affected with Microsoft also planning to build a consumer version of Teams in the coming few months. For now, it asked consumers to stick to Skype for their personal life. This indicates that Microsoft may finally think of retiring Skype altogether. Skype For Business has anyway been announced to be discontinued in favour of Microsoft Teams.

In a conversation with VentureBeat, Jeff, Teper, CVP for Microsoft 365 said, “We’re continuing to invest in Skype. It’s growing through all this. You’ll see some new features. You’ll see Skype and Teams interoperate. As Teams lands with consumers and does more things, I think people will pick Teams. But we’re not going to be heavy-handed about this. People love Skype. And so, we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves here.”

HTC might release 5G flagship smartphone in July

HTC has been out of the smartphone game for a notable period of time, and given that a big chunk of their smartphone division was acquired by Google back in 2018, there really was no reason to believe that HTC would make smartphones again for the global markets. Despite the last two years of trouble, it appears that HTC is once again gearing up to launch a flagship smartphone.

There are no specification leaks as of now, but according to MyDrivers, the Taiwanese smartphone company HTC may be readying a 5G enabled flagship smartphone for release later in July 2020. The speculation is that it would sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor and would pick up right from the HTC U12, the last flagship smartphone the company launched.

IT would be interesting to see just how many of the modern trends HTC infuses into their allegedly upcoming flagship. We do know that back in the day, HTC was known for its brilliant displays, with the HTC U12 already ditching the bezels on the size. We could, therefore, see an HTC flagship with a bezel-less display, although it would be interesting to see whether they go with the notch, punch-hole design or a pop-up assembly for the front-facing camera. Besides, the display, HTC was also pioneering on the front of audio and camera. USonic, HTC’s Sonar-based ear-mapping technology was first implemented in the HTC U11 and would tailor the sound output based on the listener’s ear canal. For its time, the tech was very impressive, not to mention, the audio output itself was lauded by most. Lastly, HTC was also one of the very first companies to implement pixel binning, starting with the HTC One, and then being branded as the company’s UltraPixel technology. The report by MyDriver also talks about the launch of the 4G version of the Desire 20 series sometime in June.

The report concludes that HTC would launch its devices in Taiwan first. It is not clear whether HTC will bring these devices to international markets, and if so, to which ones.

Fujifilm X-T4 with IBIS launched in India

Fujifilm India has announced the new Fujifilm X-T4 in India, the fourth camera in the company’s X-T series. The X-T4 also comes nearly two years after the launch of the X-T3, and yet, the two cameras share a lot in common. The Fujifilm X-T4 falls in the performance segment of the company’s mirrorless lineup, but this time includes various refinements and features that take into account both photo and video usage of the camera.

Fujifilm X-T4 Specifications

At the heart of the Fujifilm X-T4 is a 26-megapixel APS-C X-Trans sensor accompanied by the X-Processor 4 image processing chip. The sensor and the image processor are the same found on the X-T3, but there are a number of other upgrades packed into the X-T4. For starters, the new X-T4 also incorporates in-body image stabilization that the company claims can work effectively to compensate up to 6.5 stops worth of shutter speed. the on,y other Fujifilm camera to sport in-body image stabilisation was the X-H1. The AF module comes with 425 AF points with support for both contrast and phase-detect AF, the same as on the X-T3, but the company says that new algorithms make the X-T4 the fastest focusing camera in Fujifilm’s mirrorless lineup. For those who would want to use the X-T4 for video, you get support for recording 4K video at up to 60fps all in-camera with a bit-rate as high as 200Mbps. You can choose between MPEG-4, H.264, H.265 encoders for recording the files. Unlike the cameras of the past, the X-T4 comes with its own dedicated switch for video recording, and this should definitely please a lot of the video shooting user base. Fujifilm has retained the Dual SD Card slot on the X-T4 but made a major update to the battery. The new battery on the X-T4 now has a CIPA rating of 500, higher than the 390 CIPA rating of the X-T3. The new shutter on the X-T4 is rated for 300,000 actuation and aids the camera is shooting as fast as 15fps.

Fujifilm X-T4 Price and Availability

Fujifilm India has announced that the X-T4 is available for pre-order right away. There are three variants available, X-T4 Body only priced at Rs. 154,999, X-T4 Kit with Fujinon XF18-55mmF2.8-4 priced at Rs. 184,999 and X-T4 Kit with Fujinon XF16-80mmF4 R OIS WR is priced at Rs. 199,999. The camera paired with the Fujinon XF18-55mmF2.8-4 will be made available at a later date. It is interesting to see Fujifilm price the X-T4's body higher than the Canon EOS R, and only a few thousand rupees away from the Nikon Z6 and the Sony A7 MarkIII, given that the latter three all sport full-frame sensors.

PUBG Mobile Season 14 Royale Pass leaked, suggests Spark the Flame theme

PUBG Mobile’s Season 13 may have just been released a few weeks back, but it looks like the Season 14 leaks have already begun. Notable tipster, Mr. Ghost Gaming has posted a new video which details some information about the upcoming season. While leaks are best taken with a pinch of salt, the YouTuber has been pretty accurate with his leaks so far.

Kicking this off is the fact that the Season 14 Royale Pass will have the theme of ‘Spark the Flame’. As one might expect. Tier rewards include outfits, weapon skins, parachutes and more. There also seems to e some Egyptian-themed outfits that have male and female variants. There also seems to be a Cowboy-themed skin as well.

It is still not known when the Season 14 update for PUBG Mobile will drop or what will be the new features added into to game. However, a few days back. PUBG Mobile shared a very cryptic email that seems to suggest the launch of a new map. The email features a picture of a postcard, and the stamp hinted at a new map. Speculation suggests that this may be the new Karakin map, while others believe it could be a new and improved version of the Erangel map that has been a part of the game since the beginning.

The Season 13 update for PUBG Mobile introduced a host of new features, most notable of them being the new Mad Miramar update. This update takes inspiration from the Miramar 2.0 map that was added to PUBG PC a few months back. The new map adds a couple of more locations, a new unique vehicle as well as an updated version of the Win94 rifle that packs a built-in 2.7x scope. You can check out our beginner's guide to the new Mad Miramar map here.

Call of Duty: Mobile teases new Gulag Showers map

Call of Duty Mobile is teasing another new map for the game. However, just like Rust before, the community quickly recognised it as the Gulag Showers map. The map is based on a level in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. However, it should be noted that the map is pretty small and may be limited to 2v2 or 1v1 matches instead of the traditional 5v5 matches in call of duty mobile. In fact, a leaked video also seems to suggest the same. It is not yet known when the new map will be added to the game. However, it stands to reason that the new map will be released sometime next month.

Activision is also set to introduce a bunch of new changes to Call of Duty: Mobile next month. This includes an expansion of the Battle Royale map. The new map will see new areas added to the North and North-Eastern corners. The developers have also confirmed the addition of a new assault rifle called the HBRa3 that was first introduced in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

The Public Test Servers from Garena are leaking out lots of information and features that may soon be added to the game. This includes information about new perks, scorestreaks and operator skills. As well as new additions to Battle Royale mode. All these features will most likely be a part of the Season 7 update.

Currently, Call of Duty: Mobile is running a whole host of challenges and events. This gives players the opportunity to earn weapons like the Pharo SMG, the Locus sniper rifle, the Cordite SMG and the Cryo Grenade. There is also a new event that gives players the chance to earn the new Poltergeist battle royale class.
