Sonys PS5 reveal could be just around the corner

Information circulating the internet suggests that a PS5 reveal event is just around the corner. Both VentureBeat and Bloomberg say that Sony is planning a PlayStation event for June 3 but this is subject to change. Information circulating the internet last week suggested that an event was planned for June 4, so it is possible we could get an event as early as next week for the new console. Fingers crossed. The sources go on to say that it is possible these dates will change keeping the current pandemic situation in mind.

It is also expected that the console's design and pricing along with the release date will be withheld and we could get this information at a future date. Since both Microsoft and Sony want to price their consoles competitively, both brands are waiting for the other to blink first and reveal the price so the other can undercut it. According to VentureBeat, “Sony also doesn’t need to go too deep on any games it may show on June 3. The company is planning follow-up events. This includes a State of Play that will focus on both next- and current-gen games. That State of Play has a tentative schedule of early August. Again, this could shift drastically depending on a number of factors”.

Sony has taken to its online State of Play to reveal details of two of its biggest upcoming games, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, so it is possible we can get deep dives into more games through the online State of Play events.

Sony has been drip-feeding us information about the PS5 and apparently the company has had to evolve its promotional plans in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. We got a GDC like reveal for the PS5’s specifications and a simple blog post highlighting the new DualSense controller.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has not only shown us the specifications, but the design of their upcoming Xbox Series X. Microsoft also had a gameplay reveal stream, but that was met with some negative feedback as there was very little gameplay revealed as a part of the stream.

Last of Us Part 2 new gameplay shows off more of the story and gameplay mechanics

We got a proper look at one of the year’s most anticipated game, The Last of Us Part 2, courtesy of Playstation’s State of Play presentation. Even though we've gotten a full story trailer, in the new 24-minute presentation, Neil Druckmann, Director of The Last of Us Part 2, gave us a much deeper look at the gameplay and even gives us a bit more of the story of the game. It goes without saying that the game looks beautiful with a large variety of locales and environments to explore. The game retains much of the first part’s gameplay mechanics with a few added features and skills. We’ll take you guys through what we saw and what you can expect from the final release.

Naughty Dig has taken a bit hit in regards to The Last of Us Part 2 with a ton of the game being leaked weeks before the actual release date. But, the hype is still high and fans are still excited for what looks to be the Playstation 4’s swan song before the Playstation 5 hits store shelves later. As per the presentation, the game takes place a few years after the events of the first. Joel and Ellie are living in Jackson, Wyoming when an event that is not revealed rocks the community and sends Ellie on a quest for revenge. A majority of the game then takes place in Seattle as Ellie battles through two different sets of human enemies in the Washington Liberation Front and a cult-like group called the Seraphites or Scars. And, of course, we’ve got the infected as well. There are a few new infected such as the Shambler, but Druckmann did reveal that there were more creatures in the final game.

In the gameplay demo, we can see a few added features such as Ellie using a vine to rappel down buildings and swing across obstacles to even swimming underwater in certain sections. There will also be sections where you can ride a horse and explore the large and luscious environments as well.

The game retains much of what made the first game great in its stealth and crafting systems and this one looks to follow in the same vein. The game snippet looks to take place in some kind of abandoned hospital where Ellie stealthily sneaks around, taking out her pursuers. New sections also include climbing into air vents to sneak around. Collecting scrap and resources also returns as weapons are also crafted on special workbenches. The gameplay demo wasn’t very long but gave us a good look at what we can expect from the final product when the game ships on June 21.

In other Playstation news, the game could also see an HBO show from the creators behind the hit-series Chernobyl. You can read more about that here. Naughty Dog has also partnered with Seagate to release limited edition external hard drives. You can read more about that here.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau reveals companys plan to launch affordable smartphones in India soon

OnePlus is getting back at producing affordable smartphones, company CEO Pete Lau officially revealed this in an exclusive chat with Jared Newman of the Fast Company. Lau has hinted that an affordable OnePlus smartphone could be en route to India very soon and it’s likely he’s talking about the much-rumoured OnePlus Z a.k.a OnePlus 8 Lite.

The OnePlus Z was rumoured to be unveiled during the OnePlus 8 series launch event which took place on April 14 but remained a no-show. Subsequent chatter around the purported OnePlus Z on Twitter and online forums hinted that the phone has been postponed to a later date in Summer 2020 due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Having said that, the interview is the first time the company has publicly spoken about the plans to launch “affordable phones” with hints to expand into other product categories. “We can look at it as having a more affordable product offering, but all products that still remain up to the OnePlus standard . . . and through this enabling, more people to have access to OnePlus products,” Lau tells the Fast Company through an interpreter.

Why is OnePlus going back to its roots?

There could be myriad reasons as to why OnePlus needs to get back to selling value for money devices. The company that once touted itself proudly as the “flagship killer” has been known to increase the prices of its phones with every new iteration. Starting with the Rs 21,999 ($300) priced OnePlus One to the latest OnePlus 8 series of smartphones that start at Rs 41,999 ($699), the prices of the phones have increased exponentially since the OnePlus 6T series. This could have led to OnePlus losing a significant chunk of early adopters who still expect flagship-grade performance but without paying as high a price as the current crop of OnePlus phones.

This is well reflected in Lau’s statement where he says, “What we’re seeing is that with current products, there’s still a demand from a large consumer base for a more suitable price that enables more consumers to be able to access OnePlus products. That’s really important insight, and it’s something that we’re taking into very serious consideration.”

OnePlus’ decision to launch affordable smartphones comes at a time when most flagship smartphones have essentially vacated the sub-Rs 35,000 segments and now come with exorbitant price tags. The rumoured OnePlus Z can prove to be an important phone for the company, to this effect.

OnePlus Z leaked specifications

OnePlus’ upcoming affordable phone could feature a 6.4-inch OLED screen with a Full HD+ resolution. It could have a punch-hole cutout at the top for the front-facing 16MP camera. The screen is expected to support a 90Hz refresh rate with a fingerprint reader underneath the display.

OnePlus Z is rumoured to be powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chip with 5G support and paired with 8GB RAM and up to 256GB storage. The phone could have a triple camera setup on the back the consists of a primary 48MP camera, a 16MP camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

OnePlus Z could come with 4,000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging courtesy of Warp Charge 30. It is expected to be priced starting at CNY 2,999 which roughly translates of Rs 32,000 by direct conversion.

We’ll know more about the affordable OnePlus phone as we near the launch which is expected to be held in India first.

Sony launches ZV-1 a compact camera for vloggers and content creators

Sony has launched a new advanced point and shoot camera, and no, it isn’t an RX-100. The new camera is the Sony ZV1 and is a camera designed for Vloggers and content creators. At first glance, it shares some glaring similarities to the RX-100 series of cameras, but a closer look reveals a number of differences.

The Sony ZV-1 packs a 1" 20-megapixel sensor and a 25.5-70mm F1.8-2.8 lens makes its core specs very familiar. We have seen Sony use this configuration on various version of the popular Sony RX-100 models of the past, but the current RX 100 Mark VII has opted for a different lens configuration. This automatically lends the ZV-1 a reliable heritage, as we’ve seen this combination of sensor and lens win many users over. The ”vlogger” centric features start with the full articulating touchscreen. Then there is also the reworked ergonomics that are more suited for “selfie-style” shooting. Perhaps the biggest feature that’s going to attract vloggers to this camera is Sony’s Eye-AF, a feature that will lock onto the subject’s eye and track it so as to keep the subject in focus. This is a feature that’s found in many modern-day professional mirrorless cameras and its inclusion into the Sony ZV-1 is bound to rack up favourable points for Sony.

In terms of camera specs, the ZV-1’s sensor has an ISO range of 125-12800, offering plenty of room for shooting in all kinds of lighting situations. The camera can record 4K video at 30 fps, with bitrates as high as 100Mbp. For those looking to shoot in FHD, your options for frame rates are more generous, ranging from 24p all the way to 120fps.

Sony has announced that the ZV-1 will launch with a special introductory price of approximately $749 USD, applicable till June 28, 2020. After that, the price will increase to approximately $799 USD. In terms of when the camera will come to India and at what price, those details have not yet been revealed.
