Moto Razr 2 to come with a larger 67-inch foldable display

Motorola is gearing up for the second iteration of its Moto Razr foldable smartphone, which is expected to the called the Moto Razr 2. Ross Young, Founder, and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) has tweeted that the phone is going to come with a larger 6.7-inch display. Additionally, he also confirmed that even the outer display will also be larger than the original.

Motorola had already confirmed that a second-generation Moto Razr is on the way. Reports suggest that Motorola is aware of the issues that plague the first-gen Razr, which isn’t surprising given the wide-spread criticism the device received. The primary problem was around the design of the hinge, which allowed for a gap to be created between the frame of the body and the display. This allowed for small dirt particles to ingress, causing damage to the device. The second major criticism was over the display, which turned out to be delicate as well. The final criticism was the price tag, which appeared to be too high for a device running on mid-range hardware.

According to XDA Developers, the Moto Razr 2 is also expected to feature mid-range hardware, opting for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G instead of the flagship Snapdragon 865 SoC. However, this time around, the company is expected to pack 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. The phone is also expected to come with a 48-megapixel sensor instead of the 16-megapixel shooter found on the current model. There had been a lot of excitement around the Moto Razr, which was rumoured for a very long time. The company finally unveiled the device earlier this year. Initially, the Razr was expected to be just a smartphone reincarnation of the classic, but instead, the Razr ended up being a smartphone with a foldable display.

Motorola isn’t the only one prepping a successor to their foldable smartphone. Samsung has already launched the Samsung Z-Flip, a second foldable smartphone, and is rumoured to be preparing a successor to the Galaxy Fold. Foldable smartphones are the next big form-factor evolution, but continue to carry a very premium price tag. They also seem to be more vulnerable to damage the regular smartphones, so it's going to be a while before they gain mass popularity, but it is nice to see companies stick to improving the faults with the form-factor.

Apple iPhone 11 reportedly suffering from green tint issue

Some Apple iPhone 11 series owners are reporting a sudden green tint on the displays of their smartphones. The issue is being reported by users of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and even the iPhone 11 Pro Max. The issue seems to be of the display randomly turning green after unlocking the device. Given that the iPhone 11 series has been in the market for quite some time now, it is unlikely that this is a hardware issue, and is perhaps, related to the iOS 13.5 update.

The Reddit thread where the issue was first posted is riddled with reports of the iPhone display randomly turning green after users would unlock the iPhone. The thread alludes to the issue being prevalent across all versions of iOS 13, and not just iOS 13.5. Many users have, however, stated that updating to iOS 13.5 has made the issue more pronounced. Some users have also pointed out that the green tint issue tends to happen when they are using Dark mode and have night shift enabled. Many users report that the tint disappears after some time but keeps coming back.

Apple has yet to issue a statement or acknowledge the issue, but it is likely that the company could release a new OS update to tackle this specific issue. Apple did release iOS 13.5.1 a few days ago to specifically patch the vulnerability that allowed the Unc0ver jailbreak to be achieved. Given the nature of the problem, we don’t expect Apple to wait until the release of iOS 14 to fix the problem. Hopefully, the company releases an update in the coming few days.

Leaked: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card features completely new blower design

NVIDIA RTX 3080, one of the upcoming NVIDIA Ampere based graphics cards has been spotted by folks over at Chiphell (via Videocardz). The NVIDIA Ampere architecture was recently unveiled by their CEO Jensen Huang during the GTC 2020 Keynote as the new graphics architecture powering their enterprise offerings including the DGX A100 system. The RTX 3000 series is the successor to the Turing based RTX 2000 series that saw NVIDIA offering hardware-accelerated real-time ray-tracing for the first time ever. NVIDIA is rumoured to be looking at a Q3-Q4 2020 launch window for the new RTX 3000 series of graphics cards. The RTX 2000 series were officially announced to the world at Gamescom 2018 and while Gamescom 2020 has been cancelled, we have seen a slew of virtual conferences being set up in their place. We could see the RTX 3000 series being announced at any of these or NVIDIA could simply organise another virtual conference like they did for GTC 2020.

NVIDIA RTX 3080

While it is definitely quite early for us to comment on whether this would be the final design of the NVIDIA RTX 3080, it appears to be one of the final design candidates. NVIDIA seems to have gone with the magnesium alloy chassis with flat plastic faces to cover parts of the heatsink. The photos show two faces of the same graphics card or these could be separate designs. If we are to assume that these are two faces of the same card, then this would be a twin-fan design with the impeller on the front face pulling air into the shroud which is then channeled through the length of the card and expelled by another impeller that’s facing the rear. We can see that the two impellers are oriented to act in a push-pull configuration.

NVIDIA RTX 3080 Graphics Card Engineering Sample

On the backplate, we can see the RTX 3080 lettering and by the looks of it, the PCB seems to be oddly shaped. Also, it seems to be quite a short PCB for a high-end card. We’ve seen ZOTAC use similar short designs such as the ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER MINI.

NVIDIA RTX 3080 Graphics Card cooler design

On the top side, we do see an opening for the NVLink Adapter but there don’t appear to be any power connectors. This would mean that the power connectors are on the side as is the case with QUADRO cards.

NVIDIA RTX 3080 3D Model

Twitter user @Cloudol went one step ahead and created a rough sketch of the internals based on these leaked images and it gives us an idea of the airflow within the cooling assembly. Obviously, we’ll only know more closer to launch as more details come out.

NVIDIA RTX 3080 Specs

If the RTX 3080 goes down the same path as the RTX 2080, then we could see it shipping with a GA102 GPU that might have about 46-54 SMs. The GA100 comes with 108 SMs and 6912 CUDA cores. So the RTX 3080 could have around 3456 CUDA cores or even more considering that NVIDIA has switched to a more efficient 7nm TSMC node allowing it to cram a lot more CUDA cores onto the GPU as long as the power draw is within spec. A lot also depends on how much AMD’s Big Navi is capable of. The RDNA 2 cards are supposed to launch in September 2020 and have managed to gain 50% perf-per-watt over RNDA. So to compete with that we’ll need NVIDIA pushing the envelope even further.
