Nintendo has confirmed that 300,000 Switch accounts have been hacked

As we reported earlier, it looks like a lot of Nintendo accounts were hacked back in April. Well, according to a report on Business Insider, around 300,000 accounts have been hacked. This applies to users who have a Nintendo Switch, 3DS or even a Wii U. The Japanese video game giant did announce the news in April but we know how many people were affected by the hack. At the time, Nintendo released a statement saying, “This time, login IDs and password information were obtained illegally by some means other than our service, a phenomenon that seems to have been made by impersonating login to Nintendo Network ID (NNID) from around the beginning of April. We also confirm that there was an illegal login to some ‘Nintendo accounts’ via NNID using this impersonation login.”

Nintendo has also asked users to reset their passwords, just in case. As we all know, Nintendo does not have much of a presence in India but the company is slowly gaining in popularity here with the Switch and Switch Lite appealing to a whole generation of new gamers. So, do check if you’ve received an email from Nintendo informing you that your account has been hacked. A sample of the email can be seen below.

Nintendo has also asked users to think about resetting their passwords in a statement. “As a further precaution, we will soon contact users about resetting passwords for Nintendo Network IDs and Nintendo Accounts that we have reason to believe were accessed without authorization”. You can read more about the statement on Nintendo’s Support Page, here.

In other Nintendo news, the Japanese company, along with Sony, Microsoft and more plan online presentations after E3 cancellation. You can read more about that story here. Also, if you're looking for a reason to pick up the Switch, you can check out this article, right here.

Twitter Launches New Instagram-like Stories Feature in India: Fleets

On 9 June Twitter launched its own story feature for smartphones in India and is being called Fleets. Similar to Instagram or Facebook stories, once posted, these Fleets disappear after 24 hours.

Testing, testing… We’re testing a way for you to think out loud without the Likes, Retweets, or replies, called Fleets! Best part? They disappear after 24 hours. pic.twitter.com/r14VWUoF6p

— Twitter India (@TwitterIndia) June 9, 2020

Historically, Twitter is basically a micro-blogging application which is public by design. Anyone can see, like, retweet or reply to one’s tweet as long as the settings are not altered. With Fleets, however, you get more privacy in terms of response. It allows you to share your rapid thoughts before it disappears the next day. Which is where it gets its name from - fleeting thoughts.

As described by Twitter, “We built this to make it easier for you to express yourself in new ways that feel less permanent and more casual than Tweeting.” Similar to other stories Fleets can be in the form of text, pictures, GIFs or videos. Once posted your followers will be able to see your Fleets at the top of their timeline with your avatar surrounded by a blue circle. Other than that, if your profile is public, anyone could see and interact with your Fleets. One cannot publicly like, retweet or reply to your Fleets. If in case your direct messages are open, one could reply to your Fleet and share their thoughts on it privately. As with every other story features in apps, the newly added feature also allows you to see who saw your story. The only difference here compared to other apps is in terms of the user interface. Instead of scrolling to the left or right like other story features, Fleets scrolls upwards or downwards.

India is the third country to be introduced to this new feature after being previously launched in Italy and Brazil. Twitter plans to roll out this new feature worldwide soon on both Android and iOS platforms.

Amitabh Bachchan could soon give you voice directions on Google Maps

You may soon hear the voice of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan giving you voice directions on Google Maps. According to a report by Mid-Day, Google has approached the Bollywood star to use his instantly-recognisable baritone to give voice directions when navigating using Google Maps.

Google Maps’ voice directions are presently offered using an AI-enabled male or female voice and is usually kept muted for its annoying tone. But then again, the deal has not been signed yet, so we don’t know for sure it is going to happen.

“Amitabh Bachchan has the most influential and recognisable baritone. Hence, he is the best choice for the voice of Google Maps. He has been approached, but the contract has not been signed yet,” Mid-Day reported.

The iconic Bollywood star has been offered an exorbitant sum of money to come onboard the project. But the deal is not finalised, yet. “It’s up to Mr. Bachchan now,” the report states.

While the collaboration with the Amitabh Bachchan will be a first for both, it’s not the first time Google has roped in famous voices in the movie and music industry to power its voice-enabled products. Popular stars like John Legend and Issa Rae have lent their voices to the Google Assistant, but they are region-restricted only to the US and a few other countries. They’re not available in India.

Other voice assistants like Amazon Alexa also roped in the legendary voice of Samuel L. Jackson which users need to pay to enable, making it a steady source of income for the companies.

Google Maps also rolled out new COVID-19 centric features for users in India and other regions. The app will now tell you the guidelines to follow when using public transport, show places that are crowded and you should avoid, as well as show COVID-19 checkpoints to drivers.

Apple may announce ARM-based in-house chips for Macs at WWDC

Apple may be reducing its reliance on Intel with a move to power its MacBooks with ARM-based chipsets, as early as this month with an announcement expected at WWDC.

First reported by the reliable Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the project is codenamed Kalamata. WWDC which is scheduled as an online-only event on June 22 will give outside developers the first look at ARM-powered Mac chips and time to adjust to the new zeitgeist that’s incoming.

The actual hardware transition, according to Gurman, is still quite some time away. The Mac chips will be based on a similar architecture as the A-series Bionic chips used in the iPhones and iPads. However, the notebooks will still run on macOS instead of iOS.

ARM-powered chips coming to a MacBook near you

Apple will rely on the technology licensed from Arm Ltd. which is a subsidiary of Japan’s SoftBank Group. This is the underlying technology that powers all mobile devices and is fundamentally different from PC processors. As a result, Apple’s move to announce the transition at this year’s WWDC will give time to developers to optimise their software for the new chips. Interestingly enough, ARM did announce a new Cortex X1 architecture that's meant for devices larger than mobiles. Perhaps this is what Apple will use.

If this is indeed true, and it can likely be so, going by Gurman’s track record, this will be the first time an Apple-designed processor will power a Mac in its 36 years of existence. In the past, Apple has only used chips other than Intel’s two other times.

Yet, there are speculations that Apple may not stop working with Intel altogether. The ARM-powered and Apple-designed processors could be kept limited to the portable MacBooks and the consumer desktops, according to John Gruber, another noted Apple analyst. It may even give birth to an all-new lineup of Mac devices if previous rumours are anything to go by.

The processors designed in-house may be able to offer higher performance per watt, which could be the biggest reason to shift from Intel-designed processors. It’s also a way for the MacBooks to differentiate itself in the market, now that almost all Windows OEMs have figured out a way to compete with the Mac’s form-factor and performance.

Furthermore, it could be cheaper for Apple to design its own chips instead of procuring them from Intel. For one, the single-core performance of the iPhone does outperform that of the top-of-the-line MacBook Pro. It could also help Apple build up cross-platform support for its apps. Apple can use the metal APIs for its GPUs across its entire lineup of devices as well as the neural engine APIs for machine learning, opening up new avenues for consumer-grade PCs, according to Gruber.

Bose could be working a QC 35 II gaming headset: Report

Information from 9to5Google suggests that Bose could be working on a gaming version of its beloved QC 35 II headset. The website found the information in the APK of the Bose Connect app. The Bose Connect app is the one-stop-shop to connect all your Bose devices. According to the source, the information was found in version 12 of the app from the Google Play Store. 9to5Google goes on to say, “In the app, alongside less interesting additions like Facebook Login support, are references to a new device codenamed “Tibbers,” a reference to League of Legends. Connected with Tibbers, we find a handful of interesting strings that talk about connecting a “gaming microphone” to your Bose headset.” It looks like the headset will work as a Bluetooth headset but when the user connects the microphone, it will have to be connected physically via a cable. It isn’t clear whether this will be a separate mic attachment, only that makes the current QC 35 II a gaming headset or is it a new headset that looks a lot like the QC 35 II.

Bose QC 35 II is selling for around Rs 25,000 in India. The QC35 II headphone comes with similar features as its predecessor, the QC 35, with the addition of Google Assistant integration and adjustable noise cancellation. The QC35 II comes with a dedicated action button on the left earcup, which users can press and hold down to launch the Google Assistant on Android phones running Marshmallow or above. It can be used to play music, add appointments to the calendar and do more, without the need to unlock the smartphone. Users can also use any other virtual assistant so iOS users can use Siri instead of Google Assistant.

One pair of headphones that have given the Bose noise-cancelling headphones a run for its money is the Sony WH-1000XM3. In our review, we said, “the Sony WH-1000x Mark 3 sets a new benchmark when it comes to consumer headphones. Its noise cancellation prowess drowns out jet engines and crying babies, the battery lasts more than a day of continuous playback over Bluetooth and the sound signature is highly tweakable through the companion app. This is the best noise-cancelling headphone you can buy right now”.

OnePlus Z could be called Nord by OnePlus

It looks like the OnePlus Z could actually be the Nord by OnePlus. Or under the Nord by OnePlus umbrella. OnePlus has filed for a trademark for the “Nord by OnePlus” name. The trademark was filed in March 2020. It is possible that the name OnePlus 8 Lite and the OnePlus Z were internal names for the new Nord by OnePlus Lineup. The trademark reveals that we could see a number of devices under the Nord by OnePlus name including devices like “Tablet computers; Smartphones; Sleeves for laptops; Loudspeakers for mobile phones; Headphones for mobile phones; Electronic book readers; Smart television; Remote controls for televisions”. The list is pretty exhaustive and while we don't think we will see devices like tablets under the brand anytime soon. It is something we can see down the road from “Nord by OnePlus”. With the OnePlus brand name now competing in the premium space with the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, it looks like we can see more budget-friendly devices emerge under the Nord by OnePlus umbrella.

OnePlus Z Nord by OnePlus Specifications, Price, Release Date

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then the OnePlus Z, now known as the Nord by OnePlus, could launch on July 10. You can read more about it here. Coming to the specifications of the device, it looks to be a mid-range smartphone and could fall under the affordable 5G category as it could be powered by the SnapDragon 765 SoC. According to a recent survey, the OnePlus Z could sport a 6.55-inch Super AMOLED 90Hz display, however, the resolution of the display isn’t known. It would be safe to assume that the smartphone has a 1080p display. It has 6GB of RAM and 128GB built-in storage. A 4300 mAh battery with 30W fast charging powers the entire package. For the optics, the smartphone could have a triple rear camera setup sporting a 64MP + 16MP + 2MP setup. It is presumed that the 16MP camera is ultra-wide and the 2MP is a depth-sensing or macro camera. The OnePlus Z also has a 16MP selfie camera.

The OnePlus Z or the Nord by OnePlus as it is now expected to be called is speculated to be priced at Rs 24,990 and is expected to launch on July 10 in India.

In other OnePlus news, the company has confirmed that it will launch budget TVs in India priced under Rs 20,000. The company is expected to launch a 32-inch and 43-inch HD ready and FHD TV respectively. You can read more about it here.
