Watch the Xiaomi Mi Notebook, Mi Notebook Horizon Edition launch event here

Xiaomi is entering the laptop space in India with the launch of the Mi laptop. This is the first laptop that Xiaomi will launch in India. It is speculated that the company will launch the Mi Notebook Horizon Edition in India. Xiaomi, which entered India with the launch of budget smartphones, has gradually expanded its product portfolio to feature TVs, a water purifier, air purifiers, home IoT devices, power banks and many other gadgets. They have even entered the wearable space as well. The newest addition to its product portfolio in India will be the new laptop. You can catch the entire launch presentation in the video below.

Mi Notebook Horizon Edition expected specifications, features and price

The specifications of the laptop that Xiaomi is launching isn’t known. However, putting together the information on the company's official Twitter handle and the information circulating the internet, we think the device will be a thin and light laptop with an SSD and a 10th gen Intel Core i7 processor. Whether we will get the laptop in different spec configurations or just one configuration is yet to be seen. The laptop is also expected to have a 14-inch FHD display. There is no information on the pricing of the laptop, but if history is anything to go by, Xiaomi will price the laptop competitively, making it accessible to a wider audience.

Looking at the company’s product launch history, from its Mi smartphones, the TVs and even audio devices, the company has maintained competitive pricing and has always made accessibility of its products a high priority. Even its smart TVs are very affordable, bringing a rich feature set with decent performance, especially when you consider the price. We wouldn’t be surprised if the same approach was taken for the Mi Laptop.

Intel Lakefield brings Foveros to life Hybrid processors to enable smaller and power efficient laptops

Intel Lakefield, the first mobile processors from Intel to use their Foveros technology is finally here and by the looks of it, is designed to help Intel win back the crown. Foveros is a chip stacking technology that allows Intel to combine their mainstream CPU cores with some of their low-power CPU cores to produce hybrid CPUs in sort of the way ARM does with their big.LITTLE technology. Today’s announcement revolves around two processors, the Core i5-L16G7 and the Core i3-L13G4 which use one 10nm Sunny Cove big core with four 10nm Tremont small cores. There isn’t any information regarding any Core i7 or Core i9 variant so one could assume that the best of Lakefield is yet to come.

Lakefield was first announced by Intel at their 2019 CES keynote session and Intel set out some rather ambitious goals for Lakefield when it introduced the Foveros concept. These included a level of power efficiency that would consume 1/10th of the Standby Power of their existing architecture, get up to 50% more graphics performance while reducing the overall area occupied by 40%. That goes for the z-height (40% reduction) as well. The overall design goals in layman’s terms would be to make powerful laptops that are smaller while consuming less power. Did Lakefield achieve those goals? We’ll have to wait for the official benchmarks but for now these are what Intel claims.

Intel Lakefield hybrid processors

Lakefield processors are the first from Intel to ship with package-on-package (PoP) memory which means the PCBs of these devices can take up less space. Moreover the standby power can go as low as 2.5 mW which is supposedly a reduction of 91% compared to Y-series processors. They also have two display pipes natively which allows dual display form factors to be built with individually addressable parameters. These will allow manufacturers to build smaller computers than before.

Intel Lakefield board with a hybrid Foveros chip

Chris Walker, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of Mobile Client Platform said, “Intel Core processors with Intel Hybrid Technology are the touchstone of Intel’s vision for advancing the PC industry by taking an experience-based approach to designing silicon with a unique combination of architectures and IPs. Combined with Intel’s deepened co-engineering with our partners, these processors unlock the potential for innovative device categories of the future.”

How small are we talking?

Lakefield processors are smaller than their older counterparts by a large margin. Compared to the Amber Lake-Y Intel Core i7 8500Y, the Lakefield Core i5-L16G7 package is 56% smaller and the entire board takes 47% less space. The Core i7 8500Y is an older gen Core i7 processor that’s much larger than a Core i5 processor so one could claim that it’s not the right processor for the comparison. However, even the Core i5 Amber Lake-Y processors have the same package size so the comparison still holds. If we were to compare a more recent Y-series processor then the space savings seem even more impressive. An apt comparison would be the Intel Core i5-10210Y. The Core i5-10210Y takes up 2.65cm x 1.85cm of space which translates to 4.9 sq. cm. The 8500Y takes up 3.3 sq cm and the Core i5-L16G7 is 56% smaller so that gives us the package area of the Lakefield Core i5-L16G7 as 2.12 sq. cm. Compared with the Core i5-10210Y, it’s about a ridiculous 131% smaller i.e less than half the size. From the perspective of thread count, this wouldn’t be an apt comparison given that the 10210Y is a 4C/8T processor whereas the L16G7 is a 5C/5T processor. So we really need some proper benchmarks before we can figure out which processor to compare the new Lakefield ones against.

Availability

Devices powered by Intel Lakefield processors will be available starting from the Galaxy Book S that’s shipping in US markets June 2020 onwards to the Lenovo Thinkpad Fold X1 that’s slated for release later this year.

PUBG Mobile introduces the Mother Clucker set

PUBG Mobile has introduced a new set for players to collect. Cheekily called the Mother Clucker set, it is a chicken-themed set that features a unique outfit, headgear that would be the apt costume to wear when winning a chicken dinner. The outfit is available via the Chicken Treasure loot box that gives players up to 10 items to win. The crate will be available until June 26.

Besides the outfit, players can also win the ‘Duck and Cover’ grenade skin, the Cuckoo Bird DP28 skill, Cuckoo Bird Helmet and the Cuckoo Bird finish for the plane. Other rewards include the Toy Block Rocket skin for the Pan, Silver, s well as crate coupons for the classic and premium crates.

The cost to try your luck at this crate is 60UC and the company promises a reward each time you try. Players can try multiple times and each time they are guaranteed a different prize. This means that players can win everything with 10 tries. HOWEVER, each try costs more UC that the last time. So even if you consider yourself to be very lucky, you would still need to open the loot box at least twice in order to win the Mother Clucker Set and the Mother Clucker Headgear. And if you’re really unlucky (or just wish to win everything that there is), the tenth try will cost you 2260UC. As per the UC store in the game, the 1500+ UC stack (plus 300 free UC) is available for Rs 1,949. So you might end up spending over Rs 2,000 in order to win everything that there is. And remember, this is just for the final spin and not for the subsequent spins.

PUBG Mobiles Erangel 20 map leaked via Chinese version of the game

It looks like Tencent might soon release the new Erangel 2.0 map. According to a report by Sportskeeda, the revamped version of the original PUBG map is available in the beta of Game for Peace, a Chinese version of PUBG Mobile. The new map is said to come with a number of new features, mechanics and graphical improvements.

Route Planner

As per the report, the game now features a route planner that can help players plan a path in advance. This should allow players and teammates to know exactly where to go without the need to open the map and lay down a new marker every time.

Ultra HD graphics

The report further notes that Ultra HD Graphics settings have been added to the Game for Peace’s beta, so it should make its way to the global version, sooner or later. As of writing this article, the Ultra HD option is present in PUBG Mobile, but tapping on it only shows the pop-up that says “coming soon.”

Vehicle control customisation

This feature is said to give players more control over the button layout when driving. This will allow players to choose exactly where they want the controls to be when in a vehicle. Currently, players can only choose the type of driving controls they want in PUBG Mobile, but they cannot change those controls around.

New graphics

The report also notes that Erangel 2.0 will feature improved graphics with a higher level of detail. It was noted that building interiors are more detailed, while some structures have been modified and colours tweaked.

Of course, it is not yet known if or when these updates will make their way to the global version of PUBG Mobile. However, it stands to reason that these updates will be made available on the global version, sooner rather than later. For now, PUBG Mobile is testing a new map currently known only as ‘Secret Map’. You can find out more about that here.
