New OnePlus TV covers 93 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut

OnePlus Founder and CEO, Pete Lau has taken to Twitter to highlight the colour space the upcoming OnePlus TV will support. His tweet reads, “Our new Cinematic Display has earned its name with an exceptional DCI-P3 93% colour gamut, one of the fullest, most vivid displays of colour out there. #SmarterTV”. To put things into perspective, the 93 percent DCI-P3 colour space is found on premium TVs like the Sony X900F and LG SM 9000 (NanoCell TV). These aren't budget TVs so it is possible that we can expect a flagship TV from OnePlus boasting of flagship features.

Remember, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus TV will start under Rs 20,000 and that could be for the entry-level 32-inch variant. There is also a 43-inch variant speculated to launch and if the Bluetooth certification is anything to go by, then we could see a 55-inch flagship TV. Launching three TVs makes sense as OnePlus is already experienced in the 55-inch TV space with the launch of the Q1 and Q1 Pro in 2019 and could stir up the market in the large-screen segment if they price the product right. The 32 and 43-inch segments are the hottest in India and this is where OnePlus has the potential to sell higher volume TVs and grab some market share from other budget players like Xiaomi, realme, Kodak and more.

"In 2020, we aim to further enhance the OnePlus connected ecosystem experience. We look forward to offering a wider range of smart TVs that embody our burdenless technology experience, and also provide a truly seamless smart TV experience for our community at an accessible price range,” said Pete Lau, Founder and CEO, OnePlus, “We believe the new range of OnePlus TVs will redefine the premium experience in their respective price segments by providing unparalleled quality, coupled with best-in-class displays and premium design.”

It will be interesting to see OnePlus stir up the TV market. If the 93 percent DCI-P3 colour space is available on the 32-inch and or 43-inch TV, it will definitely make things interesting for those looking for a 43-inch TV and want good picture quality. However, we will have to wait for the OnePlus to unveil their upcoming TVs on July 2, 2020, to know all the details.

The dual-screen Microsoft Surface Duo could be announced as early as July

Microsoft may just be ready with the Surface Duo, and according to a report, it plans to launch the device ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 which is scheduled to launch on August 5. To undercut the popular foldable offering, Microsoft may launch the dual-screen device as early as July.

The Redmond-based tech giant showcased the Microsoft Surface Duo and Microsoft Surface Neo at an event last year.  And while it originally planned to launch the devices during the Holiday 2020 phase, it seems Microsoft is rushing to announce the device for sale before Samsung does. When launched, it is going to be the first smartphone from Microsoft after it shuttered the Windows Mobile division. The device will have two displays attached with a proprietary hinge and will run on Android.

The Microsoft Surface Neo, which is a dual-display laptop, is still quite some time away, according to the same report. It’s expected to launch sometime in 2021 with Windows 10X operating system.

Writer for Windows Central, Zac Bowden, tweeted the news out which was carried by other notable publications covering Microsoft in depth. The deadline for the launch date, according to the tweet, is the end of July. And if that’s indeed true, we might start seeing promotions and adverts of the Surface Duo soon. The device may also start shipping in less than two months unless the pandemic plays spoilsport once again.

While Panos Panay did showcase the form factor of the device, he remained tight-lipped about the hardware the device will be using. However, leaks and rumours suggest the Surface Duo will run the Snapdragon 855 and will feature two 5.6-inch displays with 1800x1350 pixels resolution each. The panel will also support the Surface Pen and the device will be around 4.8mm thin.

The Surface Duo was also reportedly allowed by internal employees outside the Surface division to take home and test, which is only allowed when the device is nearly ready. The device is tipped to come with 6GB RAM and offer 64GB or 256GB storage options. There will be a single 11MP camera above the right display, made for both rear-facing photos and selfies. The device is also expected to come with a 3,460mAh battery and feature USB-C fast charging along with 4G connectivity.

Oppo President confirms plans to make its own processor to avoid Huaweis fate

Oppo is planning to power its devices with its own processors, as confirmed by the President of Oppo China, Liu Bo in a new report. In an interview with Caixin, he confirmed that Oppo plans to design its own SoCs which may have the potential to be the “crucial driving force” for Oppo’s growth in the future. And it’s not the first time we are hearing about Oppo’s plans to become a chipset designer. The Chinese smartphone maker was earlier working on its own chipset called the Oppo M1, which instead of becoming a full-fledged system-on-chip, it turned out to be a co-processor to optimise power in its own smartphones.

Back in February,  reports claimed the CEO of Oppo had shared a company-wide internal note outlining the “Mariana Plan”, which is what Oppo is calling the project of designing its own chips.

“We have to tackle the chip technology and make the technology the crucial driving force for our future growth,” Liu Bo told Caixin, indicating that in the near future, Oppo may supplement its smartphone manufacturing with chipset manufacturing.

Bo also said the company will start working with key suppliers to design and develop its own processors. Presently, the company relies on Qualcomm, MediaTek and Samsung for the chips that power Oppo phones.

Avoiding Huawei's fate

Oppo’s decision to manufacture its own chips is not surprising. After how Huawei was used as a bargaining chip by Donald Trump when negotiating trade deals with China, it’s only sensible for Oppo to become self-reliant in sourcing its materials for its smartphones. Part of what is keeping Huawei still relevant, and in fact, right at the cutting edge, is its end-to-end hardware manufacturing. Right down to the processor, the 5G modem and the smartphone itself. Having its own processor also allows Huawei to routinely experiment and innovate new features for the industry. Samsung is also another big example, and it has far bigger chunks of the pie when it comes to the supply chain. Samsung is, in fact, the leading display, battery and camera sensor supplier for some of the best selling smartphones at present.

The February report claimed Oppo had poached chip engineers from MediaTek and Spreadtrum to work on its own custom processors. The company also filed a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for the Oppo M1. That was presumed to be the first custom-designed chipset from Oppo but turned out to be just a co-processor to improve power efficiency in smartphones. It’s still a stepping stone for the company.

However, designing custom chips is not easy. The most recent example of failure is Xiaomi which recently shelved its chipset division after a lacklustre Surge S1 SoC used in the Mi 5c that was exclusive to China. With patents, intellectual rights and proprietary designs owned by the major players like Qualcomm, MediaTek, Apple and Samsung, it’s presently a bigger minefield than manufacturing a smartphone. It will certainly be interesting to see how the company goes ahead with the project.
