Indian government discredits viral message claiming to ban Chinese apps like TikTok, Club Factory and more

A viral message doing the rounds of the internet and WhatsApp groups, claiming the Indian government has officially prohibited some “Chinese Applications” from being listed in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store has been discredited by the PIB (Press Information Bureau) Fact Check wing.

The message looks like an official order from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) that refers to an alleged letter of instructions by MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) and lists out 14 mobile apps that are to be de-listed from the app stores of Google and Apple. However, the government has refuted this viral message and said that it hasn’t issued any such order or instruction.

Claim: A viral message of an order allegedly from NIC claims that @GoI_Meity has prohibited some apps from being made available on App Stores. #PIBFactCheck: The Order is #Fake. No such instruction has been given by @GoI_MeitY or NIC. pic.twitter.com/Dt7rMR7nIz

— PIB Fact Check (@PIBFactCheck) June 19, 2020 Has the Indian government prohibited the use of apps with Chinese origin?

The alleged order directs the Regional Executive and representatives of both Google and Apple India to restrict a total of 14 apps from their respective app stores. The list includes apps like TikTok, Club Factory, Clash of Kings, CamScanner, Game of Sultans, LiveMed, Bigo Live, Vigo Video, BeautyPlus, Mobile Legends, Shein, Romwe, AppLock and VMate.

A tweet from the official PIB Fact Check handle has discredited the order, claiming it to be fake. Amidst the anti-China sentiments, such messages are doing the rounds on the internet and even on WhatsApp groups in order to influence people to take action on the purported Chinese based apps. We’ll advise our readers to take such messages with a pinch of salt unless you can verify the source or it comes through an official stream.

Recently, the Indian Intelligence Agencies allegedly sent a list of 52 apps to the Indian government suggesting it to issue an official advisory against the use of these apps. The agencies have cited security and privacy concerns over the use of these Android and iOS apps in India. However, the government hasn’t issued any official notification against the use of any of these apps and neither has it instructed app stores to de-list these alleged Chinese origin apps.

Apple to unveil ARM-based MacBook Pro and iMac at WWDC 2020: Report

Apple’s annual WWDC event kicks off tonight and it looks like predictions are coming in as to what the Cupertino giant is going to show off at the event. According to analyst Ming-chi Kuo, we could get our first look at the ARM-based Macs that have been doing the rounds of the rumour mills.

Speaking about the ARM MacBook Pro, Kuo says, “The new model’s form factor design will be similar to that of the existing Intel 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌. Apple will discontinue the Intel 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ production after launching the ARM 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌.” As for the iMac, he says, “ARM‌ ‌iMac‌ will be equipped with the all-new form factor design and a 24- inch display. Apple will launch the refresh of existing Intel ‌iMac‌ in 3Q20 before launching the ‌ ARM iMac‌”.

Kuo also goes on to highlight that starting in 2021, all new Macs will sport Apple processors. It will take 12 to 18 months for Apple to transition to an all-ARM lineup. How this will affect the apps support and performance of the machines is yet to be seen. Apple is also expected to use Mini LED displays in the new ARM Macs which could greatly improve the experience on the machines.

Another thing to note is how this will affect the cost of the machines. While Apple’s iMac and MacBook Pro are premium priced machines, could the ARM processors help reduce the price?

Stay tuned as we will bring you all the announcements from WWDC as the event kicks off tonight 10:30 PM India time.

Apple to assemble iPhone SE 2020 in India: Report

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Apple is looking to manufacture or rather assemble the 2020 iPhone SE in India. According to Apple Insider, “Apple has told at least one of its suppliers in China to start shipping components for the 2020 iPhone SE to India manufacturing partners. This will start the process to assemble the new iPhone in India, allowing the company to work around hefty import taxes.”

An Indian Government official in May said, “We expect Apple to produce up to $40 billion worth of smartphones, mostly for exports through its contract manufacturers Wistron and Foxconn.” Wistron assembled the original iPhone SE in India and it looks like they will assemble the 2020 iPhone SE (review) in India as well. Foxconn India has been assembling the iPhone XR (review) in India.

To put the taxation of smartphones imported in India to perspective, the iPhone SE sells for about $400 (Rs 30,500 approx directly converted) in the US but in India, the smartphone starts at Rs 42,500. If the iPhone SE is assembled in India, it could lead to a drop in price for the device, making it an attractive proposition for those looking to enter the Apple ecosystem.

According to the source, it looks like the decision to move some of the iPhone SE manufacturing to India comes “after an initiative by the India government to increase manufacturing in the region”.

Apple isn’t the only one looking to make a dent in the Indian market by manufacturing locally and reducing the price of their products. Other smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturers are looking to take advantage of this and shifting assembling to India.

Information circulating the internet suggests that OnePlus has partnered with Skyworth to manufacture its TVs in India. OnePlus has done this to take advantage of zero import duties of the key component which is the open cell TV panel. It accounts for 70 percent of the cost of the TV. This will help OnePlus keep the cost of the TV down and be more competitive in the Indian market. When OnePlus launched the Q1 and Q1 Pro in India in 2019, the TVs were expensive, largely due to the import tax. It looks like the upcoming OnePlus TVs could be cheaper since they may be made in India. You can read more about it here.

OnePlus Z price suggested by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei

OnePlus is expected to launch a new, more affordable smartphone called the OnePlus Z. OnePlus plans to launch the device on July 10. However, the report did note that the date is still tentative, which means that it could still change. But, one thing that has been suggested is the price. Co-founder Carl Pei tweeted a suggestion which was a retweet of an old 2014 post of the OnePlus One. This could mean that the device could start at $229 (Rs 22,779 directly converted). The tweet does not reveal any launch date, but it would seem that the OnePlus Z could cost as much as the OnePlus One.

It's been a while... https://t.co/O61EoIa3Gc

— Carl Pei (@getpeid) June 19, 2020

The specifications of the OnePlus Z were leaked via an online forum called DesiDime. It was reported that a survey was sent out to some PayBack customers, asking if they would be willing to purchase a device from OnePlus at a particular price and specification. It is tipped to pack a 6.55-inch Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It is also expected to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. At the back, the phone is said to offer a triple-rear camera design with a 64MP+16MP+2MP configuration. The OnePlus Z may be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC and feature a 4300mAh battery.

Late last month, OnePlus CEO, Pete Lau revealed the company’s plans to launch affordable smartphones once again. During an interview with Fast Company, Lau hinted that the new device would be coming to India soon. It was noted that the company initially planned to launch the device alongside the OnePlus 8 series’ launch. Reports suggest that the launch of the device was postponed to a later date to the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak.

In fact, the OnePlus Z could be called “Nord by OnePlus”. You can read more about that story here.
