Amazon Prime Video now lets users have up to 6 profiles: How it works

The one feature that Amazon Prime Video lacked when compared to Netflix was Profiles. Let’s face it, one family will use one Amazon Prime Video account and since everyone has different tastes, the “continue watching” and "my list" looked pretty muddled up. Now, Prime Video users can finally have access to profiles, something we’ve seen on Netflix since it launched. Here we will tell you everything you need to know about profiles on Amazon Prime Video.

How many user profiles can I have on Amazon Prime Video?

According to Amazon, a user can have up to six user profiles (one default primary profile + five additional profiles, either adult or kids) within Prime Video on a single Prime Video account. This means that you could have a different profile for family members, or if you are like me, you will have profiles based on genres you enjoy watching.

How many simultaneous streams can take place from one Amazon Prime Video account?

Once again, Amazon says that a user “may stream up to three videos at the same time using the same Amazon account. You may stream the same video to no more than two devices at a time”. This means that if you have three TVs in your house, you can stream three different videos, one on each TV and enjoy. However, if multiple people want to watch the same content, then the same content can be streamed on only 2 devices at the same time.

How does Amazon Prime Video Profile and simultaneous stream compare to Netflix?

While Prime Video gives you access to 6 profiles with one account, Netflix gives you access to 5 profiles with one account. Amazon Prime Video has one plan in India priced at Rs 999 per year giving you the ability to stream simultaneously on three devices. On Netflix, the number of devices you can stream on is based on the plan you have. The premium plan priced at Rs 799 per month for Netflix gives you access to stream on 4 devices at the same time. The Rs 649 plan per month gives you access to stream on 2 devices at the same time. The Rs 499 per month plan gives you access to stream on only 1 device at a time. And the Rs 199 per month plan is limited to streaming on smartphones or tablets, once again, one device at a time. To stream in 4K and HDR, users need access to the top tier plan on Netflix.

Can I stream in 4K and HDR on Prime Videos?

Yes, the Rs 999 per year plan is the only plan and if the content is available in 4K and HDR, it will stream in 4K and HDR provided your TV supports it and so does the streaming device you are using. For example, the 1080p Chromecast or 1080p Fire TV stick will only show content in 1080p SDR. However, the 4K Fire TV Stick, or Mi Box 4K or gaming consoles like the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X will stream in 4K and HDR when available.

Prime Video supports HDR Playback

What devices support Prime Video Profiles?

Prime Video profiles can be accessed on the following devices.

Android and iOS powered tablets and smartphones. The browser on Desktops and Laptops Prime Video app on Smart TVs Chromecast Apple TV - Gen 2 and 3 Fire TV Stick

Users should note that Profiles can be created and managed on all the above-mentioned devices except for the Apple TV. On Apple TV, users can only switch profiles on Prime Video.

TikTok loses yet another country after India ban, US also mulling to ban the app

TikTok might face stand to lose yet another country after the Indian government banned the app along with 58 other Chinese apps on grounds of engaging in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India. The app was also found to be copying contents of the clipboard which was discovered via the new iOS 14 update on Apple devices.

In March, researchers discovered some troubling vulnerabilities in the TikTok app which includes reading text stored in the clipboard which is used by computers to store data that are copied or cut from things like passwords, emails and others. The claim was later verified by the beta release of iOS 14 which comes with a feature of notifying users every time clipboard content is accessed by an app.

Which is what might have prompted the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to state on national television that the US is “certainly looking at” banning TikTok. as reported by Reuters.  Like in India, there’s a growing concern that the app could be used by the Chinese government as a tool of surveillance and propaganda.

TikTok exits Hong Kong after China starts censoring content

And while the US is yet to take a concrete step towards banning the popular short video app, TikTok announced it would be pulling out of Hong Kong, a region that’s facing massive uprising against the Beijing government over a controversial national security law that was recently passed. And since the law came into effect, the Beijing government has been censoring anti-China content from social media.

A 116-page government document was released on Monday night in Hong Kong that revealed the censorship plans. This has put pressure on global social networks like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Telegram, Google and TikTok to comply with censorship requests. And according to reports by agencies, all of them except TikTok has refused to comply. TikTok chose to exit the market.

TikTok cited “in light of recent events” as reasons for pulling out of Hong Kong, without going into details. Being based out of Beijing, the app is frequently cited as a surveillance tool of the Chinese government by country leaders, including Donald Trump. And the new “clipboardgate” is certainly not helping TikTok’s image right now.

A global backlash against TikTok

TikTok has been trying to position itself as a global app, distanced from the Chinese ownership and origin. It has also denied censoring content for the Chinese government on the platform. But it’s the company’s response to the events in Hong Kong that will be crucial.

Internet companies from China routinely face scrutiny because of the country’s intelligence laws, which vaguely mandates every organisation to comply with Beijing’s ‘intelligence needs’. They simply have no choice but to comply.

Yet, the appeal of the app has made it a global phenomenon. The app has been downloaded more than 2  billion times, commanding more downloads than the social media juggernauts owned by Facebook. Users have been taken in by the simplistic UI, and the ability to make content viral and command a large follower base by posting short, creative videos.

TikTok now has three options ahead of it, in response to the Hong Kong — Complying with Beijing’s request and censor data, refuse to do so, or just exit voluntarily and avoid controversy.
