iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 Public Beta now available: Heres how to install

Apple has announced at their annual World Wide Developer Conference that the public beta for iOS14 would go live in July, and the company has delivered on that promise. The public beta for both iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 is now live and available for all to try. The upcoming versions of the mobile operating system from Apple incorporates a number of great features that will definitely find takers with users of the iPhone and the iPad.

How to install iOS 14 on iPhone

If you’re interested in testing out iOS14, here’s a step-by-step process on how you can install it. However, do note that this is a beta software and contains bugs, which could lead to instability with certain apps. Additionally, do remember that a system backup created on iOS 14 will not work when trying to restore back to iOS 13.5. You’ll be able to roll back the OS, but not be able to bring back your data. This is due to the fact that iOS does not allow backups made on a newer version of iOS to be used on an older version. With this in mind, let’s get started.

iOS14 Public Beta and iPadOS 14 Public Beta are now live for users to experience.

Step 1: Using the device you want to use the new version of iOS on, go to Apple’s Beta website and login with your Apple ID.

Steps 2: Take a full backup of your device.

Step 3: Choose the device you want to enrol in the Apple Beta program, in this case, an iPhone or an iPad.

Step 4: Click on 'Download profile.' It will be towards a lower point in the enrollment page.

Step 5: Accept the download initiated by Apple’s beta program website.

Step 6: On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Profile and select the downloaded profile, click install.

Step 7: Reboot iPhone.

Step 8: Once the iPhone is rebooted, go back to Settings > General > Software Update.

Step 9: Download iOS 14 via OTA update.

That’s it! The iPhone will download the newest version of iOS 14 Public Beta and install it on the iPhone. All you have to do now is patiently wait for the large download to finish.

The process remains the same for installing the public beta of iPadOS 14 and even MacOS BigSur. Do note that we do not advise on installing beta software on your daily driver, and while its still okay for smartphones, if your MacBook is crucial for your day-to-day professional work, we strongly advice not upgrading to BigSur Public Beta as it has a number of known issues such as problems with Messages app, the inability to resize calendar widgets or select accounts in calendar. There’s even a bug where the Music app might crash when typing in the search bar. A full list of MacOS BigSur bugs can be seen here, and we strongly advice going through the list to make sure you won’t be drastically impacted.

The final build of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 is expected to be made available with the launch of the iPhone 12 series later this year in September.

Scammers using fake TikTok Pro app to steal user data in India

A fake TikTok Pro app is reportedly being peddled by scammers to users via text messages amidst the ongoing ban on Tiktok and 58 other apps with Chinese origin. Several reports and tweets refer to SMS or WhatsApp messages where the sender claims to provide a download link to TikTok Pro for users to “enjoy videos and also make Create Videos again.”

Recently, the Indian government restricted 59 apps with Chinese origin from being used in the country and the list includes popular short-video making platform TikTok. The ByteDance-owned mobile app considers India as its biggest overseas market with over 200 million users. Now, some people are leveraging TikTok’s popularity by sending text and WhatsApp messages to people asking them to download a “pro” version of the app.

The link that is being sent to users is down at the time of writing this report, nevertheless, State Police of Telangana has posted a tweet asking users to be alert and wary of cybercrimes.

What is TikTok Pro and how to stay safe from fake apps?

TikTok Pro is a fake mobile app that has been made to resemble the original TikTok app and is being used by scammers to gain access to your phone’s camera system and microphone. The app doesn’t function once installed so it’s unclear what the app does but it does require the two permissions which could be deemed a security risk.

While the link to download the fake app is down, it’s recommended that you only download apps from the respective app stores of Android and iOS. Any app originating from any other untrusted sources shouldn’t be installed as a part of the general hygiene of using the phone. You could be putting your data and yourself at risk by downloading apps from untrusted sources which could be malicious and could prove to be harmful.

After the ban on TikTok in India, many short-video platforms have cropped up and more recently, Instagram introduced its own short-videos section in the app called Reels in India. So if you want to create short videos and upload it online, you could have a look at apps like Chingari, Roposo and more that we have compiled as alternatives to TikTok. You could also give a shot to Reels on Instagram which just debuted in India.

Indian Government requests details about data collection and location of data centres from banned apps

The banned apps of Chinese origin have been asked to furnish details about their data collection practices, location of operational centers and more to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), according to a report by Hindustan Times.

The Government of India banned TikTok, Shareit and 57 other apps at a time when border tensions between India and China are at an all-time high.

The report states that a questionnaire seeking the details was sent by the ministry to the parent companies of the apps, as a follow-up to the ban.

“The emails have been sent to them so that we can collate and analyse more details about the operations of the applications. This is a part of the process under the IT Act,” an anonymous MeitY official was quoted in the report.

The government invoked relevant provisions under the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 to ban the apps from the Indian webspace, citing engagement “in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”

A TikTok spokesperson had said the app has already reached out to the government with relevant details regarding their operations and would be challenging the ban. India is one of the largest markets for the short video platform. Within days of the ban, homegrown alternatives to TikTok have cropped up, racking in the downloads. Even Instagram didn't want to let go of the opportunity and started testing the Reels feature in India.

"TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and has not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese government," Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok India said in a statement.

For now, the 59 apps that are banned have been taken down from the Google Playstore and the Apple App Store. A panel has also been set up to hear the representations of the owners of the apps. The panel will include officials from MeitY, Home Ministry, CERT-In and the law ministry, in according with provisions under Section 69A of the IT Act.
