AMD launches Ryzen 4000G Series APUs for OEMs only New Zen+ 3000 Series Athlon CPUs also announced

AMD announced the availability of Ryzen 4000G series of APUs but has limited availability to OEMs only. This means DIY enthusiasts such as yourselves will not be able buy these new 4000G APUs in the retail market, yet. The AMD Ryzen 4000G APUs use the same Renoir mobile silicon as we saw in the recently launched Mobile 4000 series of processors. This makes the AMD Ryzen desktop 4000G processors based on the Zen2 architecture and not Zen3. The DIY Ryzen 4000 CPUs based on Zen3 microarchitecture are set for launch later this year. Since desktop hardware has more headroom, the Renoir Mobile 4000 APUs have been bumped up to fit the 35W and 65W power envelopes that desktop environments can easily handle. In all, AMD is launching 12 new 4000G series processors under the Ryzen 4000G and Ryzen 4000G Pro series, with the latter featuring AMD’s enterprise grade protection technologies.

AMD Ryzen 4000G PRO APUs

AMD Ryzen 4000G series APUs

The AMD Ryzen desktop 4000G series will see six Ryzen 4000G APUs and six Ryzen 4000G Pro APUs. The lineup is fairly simple, we see 3 core configurations in the stack starting from the Ryzen 3 4300G having 4 Cores / 8 Threads and going up to the Ryzen 7 4700G which has 8 Cores / 16 Threads. There’s a Ryzen 5 4600G in the middle with 6 Cores / 12 Threads. All of these three APUs are rated for 65W and they are accompanied by 35W ‘GE’ APUs that have the exact core and Turbo configuration. So a Ryzen 3 4300G (65W) and a Ryzen 3 4300GE (35W) have the exact same 4C/8T turbo configuration but different TDPs. The same pattern can be seen in the Pro series of APUs as well. The only exception happens to be the top SKU in the stack, i.e. the 4700GE and 4750GE whose Turbo clocks are lower than their 65W counterparts. Obviously, base frequencies are more in tune with the TDP so that’s different between the 65W and 35W variants.

All these APUs have support for DDR4-3200 memory and have eight PCIe 3.0 lanes since these were designed for single add-on cards. SLI or CrossFire are not seen in mobile form factors. This could be one of the reasons why we don’t see these processors being launched for the DIY market. Also, it should be noted that APUs are generally used in entry-level configurations which don’t feature discrete graphics cards so putting aside PCIe lanes for an add-on graphics card isn’t a priority.

The 4000G series of APUs in the above list will be supported by AM4 motherboards using the 400 and 500 series of chipsets.

New AMD Athlon Gold and Silver 3000 Zen+ APUs

Performance wise, these Athlon 3000 APUs would be ranked below the Ryzen 3000 series APUs.

AMD Ryzen 4000 APUs for Desktop DIY Enthusiasts

AMD always releases APUs based on a certain microarchitecture after the CPUs are out. So the 3000 Series Zen2 CPUs would be followed by the 4000 Series Zen2 APUs. Which is what we saw today, however, since these are Renoir desktop ports, we haven’t actually seen the DIY APUs yet and AMD is supposedly going to release them soon. Ideally, we’d like to see them before the Ryzen 4000 CPUs are launched but with the current DIY market in shambles thanks to Covid-19, AMD appears to be taking the cautious path or catering to demand rather than putting stuff out in the market and hoping for consumers to come.

OnePlus Nord vs Vivo X50 vs Realme X3: Specifications and prices compared

OnePlus Nord has officially launched in India after many leaks, rumours and speculations and is the company’s affordable mid-range smartphone. Starting at Rs 24,999, the OnePlus Nord goes up against the likes of the Realme X3 and Vivo X50 which is the only other smartphone in India to be powered by Snapdragon 765G chip. The OnePlus Nord (first impressions) brings the premium OnePlus experience to the mid-range with a powerful chipset, quad cameras on the rear, dual selfie cameras, fast charging and OxygenOS to boot.

The OnePlus Nord directly competes with the only other Snapdragon 765G-powered smartphone, the Vivo X50 which launched some days prior and the Realme X3 which is priced the same as the Nord but packs in a flagship-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset. Let’s take a look at how the Nord compares in front of the Realme X3 and Vivo X50 based on specifications, features and pricing.

OnePlus Nord vs Vivo X50 vs Realme X3: Pricing

OnePlus Nord starts at Rs 24,999 for the base variant with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage while the Vivo X50 starts at Rs 34,990 for the base variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Realme X3 is priced starting at Rs 24,999 for the variant with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

OnePlus Nord vs Vivo X50 vs Realme X3: Design and Display

OnePlus Nord has a metal-glass sandwich design that measures 8.2 millimetres and weighs 184 grams. The back panel is topped with a layer of Gorilla Glass 5 for added protection and curves towards the edges to offer a better in-hand feel. The Realme X3 too comes with a Gorilla Glass 5 back panel but is a little hefty at 202 grams and 8.9 millimetres. The Vivo X50, on the other hand, is the lightest of the lot weighing in at 173 grams and measuring 7.5 millimetres in thickness.

Neither of the three phones comes with any kind of ingress protection certification, however, OnePlus Nord does come with little gaskets for protection against usual splashes of water. The phones also don’t come with a 3.5mm audio jack to connect earphones.

OnePlus Nord features a 6.44-inch Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution display that uses an AMOLED panel with a 90Hz high-refresh-rate and dual punch-hole cutouts for the two selfie cameras. The display is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5 against drops and daily wear and tear. The Realme X3 features a slightly bigger 6.6-inches LCD screen with a Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution display and dual punch-hole cutouts like the Nord. The screen on the X3, however, has a faster 120Hz refresh rate. It is also topped with a layer of Gorilla Glass 5.

The Vivo X50 features a 6.56-inch Full HD+ (2376 x 1080 pixels) resolution AMOLED screen with a 90Hz high-refresh-rate and is HDR10+ certified. It doesn’t come with a layer of Gorilla Glass protection as the other two phones.

Overall, the OnePlus Nord has the most compact display out of the three phones while the Vivo X50 is the most lightweight phone among the Nord and Realme X3.

OnePlus Nord vs Vivo X50 vs Realme X3: Under the hood

OnePlus Nord and the Vivo X50 are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset with an octa-core CPU that runs at upto 2.4GHz with Adreno 620 GPU. This is paired with upto 12GB RAM and 256GB storage for the Nord and upto 8GB RAM and 256GB storage for the X50. The Snapdragon 765G chipset sits right below Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus chipsets and is the most powerful mid-range chipset in the market currently.

The Realme X3, on the other hand, is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset which is Qualcomm’s 2019 flagship chip that is paired with an octa-core CPU running at 2.96GHz  speeds and the Adreno 640 GPU which is upto 15 percent faster than the regular Snapdragon 855 chip. This is paired with upto 8GB RAM and 128GB storage options to choose from.

OnePlus Nord runs on the company’s popular OxygenOS which ensures a smooth and long-lasting performance of the phone no matter which app you run or any game you play. With the high-refresh-rate screen, OnePlus Nord offers one of the best Android experience to have on a phone. It will also receive two years of software updates as other OnePlus flagship phones and is 5G-ready.

Vivo X50 runs on FunTouch 10.5 which is based on Android 10 while the Realme X3 runs on the company’s own Realme UI. Both of these software experiences aren’t up to OnePlus’s standards and come packed with bloatware and unnecessary ads. OnePlus has, over the years perfected its OxygenOS experience which is one of the slickest Android interfaces on a smartphone. The company optimises its software experience in a granular way and is able to deliver a smooth performance for the long-term.

OnePlus Nord vs Vivo X50 vs Realme X3: Cameras

OnePlus Nord comes with a quad-camera setup that consists of a primary 48MP camera with an f/1.75 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 119-degree field-of-view, a 2MP macro camera and a 5MP depth sensor. This is backed by dual-LED flash and OIS support. Thre rear cameras can record in 4K UHD at upto 30FPS and super slow-motion videos at 240FPS. On the front, there’s a 32MP primary selfie camera assisted by an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 105-degree field-of-view.

The Realme X3 also features a quad-camera setup on the back that consists of a primary 64MP camera with f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP telephoto camera with 2X optical zoom, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 119-degree field-of-view and a 2MP macro camera. The cameras can record in 4K at 60FPS and are supported by electronic image stabilization.

There’s a dual-selfie camera on the front like the Nord that consists of a primary 16MP camera and an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 105-degree field-of-view.

Vivo X50, on the other hand, comes with a 48MP primary camera with an f/1.6 aperture, a 13MP portrait camera with 2X optical zoom, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera with 120-degree field-of-view and a 5MP macro camera. The rear cameras can record in 4K UHD at upto 30FPS and supports EIS. There’s a 32MP selfie camera housed within the punch-hole cutout on the top-left corner.

We will be testing out the cameras on the OnePlus Nord in detail for our review and will make sure to pit it against the cameras of the Realme X3 and Vivo X50 for a detailed overview on how the three cameras fare in real life. On paper though, the Realme X3 has got a more versatile camera setup than the other two phones.

OnePlus Nord vs Vivo X50 vs Realme X3: Battery

OnePlus Nord features a 4,115mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging out-of-the-box thanks to WarpCharge 30T adapter. The Realme X3 comes with 4,200mAh battery and also supports 30W fast charging while the Vivo X50 is equipped with a 4,200mAh battery with support for 33W fast charging. A 30W fast charging should essentially be capable of power a phone from 0 to 100 percent in around an hour or so.

OnePlus Nord launched in India starting Rs 24,999: Specs, features, availability

After months of teasing, OnePlus has finally launched its much talked-about affordable smartphone Nord. The Nord is the company's fresh entrant in the sub 30K price range that comes with mid-range Qualcomm 765G instead of the best available hardware, as seen on the OnePlus 8-series.

While there was massive hype around the Nord, there was a very little left to be unveiled about the phone as the company had itself revealed all the crucial specs, design and features. The company assured that it would be priced under $500 for the global markets, but we now have the official details about the OnePlus Nord's price, availability and variants.

OnePlus Nord Price and Variants

The OnePlus Nord is launched in three RAM/storage variants - 6GB/64, 8GB/128GB and 12/256GBGB - which are priced at 24,999, 27,999 and 29,999 respectively. It will be available in two colours - Blue Marble, Grey Onyx.

As always, the new OnePlus phone will be available on Amazon.in and the sale for the 8GB and 12GB RAM variant kicks off on August 4, while the cheaper 6GB RAM variant will go on sale sometime in September.

OnePlus Nord specifications and features

We've been using the OnePlus Nord from a few days, and it's fair enough to say that it borrows a lot from the OnePlus 8. You can read about our initial take on the phone when we started using it.

While the form factor of the Nord differs a bit from the OnePlus 8-series, it still has the 6.44-inch display with FHD+ resolution and 20:9 aspect ratio and 90Hz refresh rate. It has Gorilla Glass 5 protection to keep it guarded against scratches and cracks as well.

OnePlus had already teased that the Nord will have six cameras combining front and back setup. There are four cameras on the back with a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 5MP depth sensor. The dual setup on the front includes a 32MP main and an 8MP wide-angle camera.

Spec-wise, as already revealed the smartphone packs Snapdragon 765G paired with 6/8/12GB LPDDR4X RAM having 64GB, 128GB and 256GB UFS 2.1 storage. Note that the 64GB variant is only available for the Indian market. The Nord runs Oxygen OS10.5 based on Android 10 with minor tweaks in the calling and messaging app.

The phone has an in-display fingerprint sensor that unlocks the phone in a jiffy, although the company has not confirmed if it's the one used in the 8-series. Unsurprisingly, it has a USB 2.0, Type-C port for audio and charging duties, but note that there's no wireless charging present on the Nord. However, it does have OnePlus' proprietary WarpCharge 30T fast charging tech that claims to charge the 4115mAh battery from 0-70% in 30 minutes.

For connectivity, it has 2x2 MIMO, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, NFC and dual SIM 5G support.

DRDOs Bharat autonomous drones to help Indian Army conduct surveillance in Indo-China LAC

The ongoing dispute at the border between Indian and Chinese forces have accelerated the procurement and development of high-tech surveillance tech. One new weapon in the arsenal of the Indian Army is an indigenously developed drone called Bharat, made by DRDO, the R&D arm of Indian defence.

Bharat drones will be used by the Indian forces to conduct surveillance in high altitude areas on the treacherous Himalayan terrain along the line of actual control in Eastern Ladakh between India and China.

DRDO’s Bharat autonomous drones to help Indian Army conduct surveillance in Indo-China LAC

The Bharat Drone, according to DRDO, can be listed among the “world’s most agile and lightest surveillance drones.” The drones reportedly work autonomously at any location with high accuracy and sports a unibody biometric design with an advanced release technology.

According to the research wing, the drone can provide real-time video transmission during advanced night vision capabilities. It can also detect humans hidden in deep forests. The drone is also equipped with AI technology to distinguish between friends and foes.

DRDO said the drones have been developed to withstand extreme weather conditions. Interestingly, it can also operate in swarm operations, according to a report by ANI. It’s also difficult to be detected by radar systems, ANI said.

In other news, Indian Intelligence agencies have asked the government to ban 52 mobile apps for having ties with China. You can find out which apps they are here. In fact, the Indian Government has also requested details about data collection and location of data centres from the banned apps. Because of tensions on the border, the Indian government has banned 59 mobile apps including TikTok, Shareit, UC Browser, Mi Community and more.

Netflix is testing out its Mobile+ plan, priced at Rs 349 per month in India

Netflix is currently testing a new Mobile+ plan in India priced at Rs 349 monthly that offers HD streaming for phone, tablet or PC. It does not include streaming on TV and follows the basic mobile plan which costs Rs 199. The Mobile+ plan offers HD streaming on a single device and that could be your smartphone, tablet or PC.

In a statement to the media, Netflix said “We launched the Mobile plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice this offer bring. We will only roll it out long-term if they do.” The Mobile+ plan is only being trialled with select users currently and based on the adoption rate Netflix will decide whether the plan can be added to the roster permanently.

Netflix is testing out its Mobile+ plan for Rs 349

The Mobile+ plan by Netflix offers HD streaming on your smartphone, tablets or PC but does not support the television. The company announced the Mobile plan back in 2019 and now with the Plus plan, users can watch Netflix on their computers as well. So, if you are someone who watches a lot of movies and TV shows on your PC, the Netflix Mobile+ plan could be perfect for you.

If you want to watch Netflix on your TV, you might want to check out the Basic, Standard, Premium plans that offer up to 4K streaming and support for up to 4 concurrent streams. The Basic plan is priced at Rs 499, the Standard plan is priced at Rs 649 and the Premium plan is priced at Rs 799 in India. The Mobile+ plan sits between the Mobile and Basic plans and is an extension of the mobile-only plan that the company has introduced in some markets.

Netflix isn’t the most affordable streaming platform in India and its move to trail a new Rs 349 Mobile+ plan could be indicative of a strategy shift as the company wants to reach out to a wider audience in the country.

If you're looking to check-out some new films or TV shows on Netflix, here's our list of recommendations for the best fantasy movies, best anime TV shows, best superhero films and best sci-fi films that you must watch.
