A PS5 leak hints at interchangeable faceplates, making this the first customizable PlayStation ever

Sony has shown off the PS5 console in a grand reveal event but there are still a number of unanswered questions about the console. For starters, what are the ports at the back? Where is the M.2 slot for storage expansion? While PlayStation Lead Architect Mark Cerny has said we will get a teardown of the console before it launches, it is possible that one of Sony’s key aesthetic features for the PS5 has leaked online - customizable faceplates.

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then the white plates on the PS5 can be snapped on and off. This means that you will be able to purchase additional plates aftermarket to customize the console to your liking. It also means that you will be able to replace the faceplates if they get damaged or dirty as a lot of people have been quite concerned about the durability of the “fins” of the console.

The question that comes to mind is whether both the faceplates will be changeable. It seems possible for the all-digital edition, but what about the one with the disc? If you look at the image of the PS5 with a disc drive it looks like the drive is beneath the white plate which means it is possible that the faceplate is changeable, but this is something we will only know when the feature is confirmed by Sony.

A PS5 leak hints at interchangeable faceplates

The information about the customizable faceplates comes from ResetEra which has posted images of a bunch of faceplates in what looks like the assembly process of the PS5. There is also one post with an A4 sized paper kept on top of the faceplate so a size comparison can be drawn as to how big the console is. Even though the internet has taken the size of a standard Blu-ray drive to judge how big the PS5 is, there is no concrete information on the dimensions of the console.

If you are interested in checking out the design of the PS5 and seeing how it compares with the Xbox Series X, you can do so here. You can also check out our comparison between the specifications of the 2 consoles here. We also had a chance to speak with the head of PlayStation India about the journey of the PS4 and you can read that here.

Both Sony and Microsoft are set to launch their consoles towards the end of 2020 in the global market. While Microsoft has expressed interest in a simultaneous global launch of the Xbox Series X, there is no information on when the console will come to India. Sony, on the other hand, has a page for the PS5 live on Amazon, Flipkart and its own portal in India and we can expect the console in India close to its global debut. You can read more about the listing page for the PS5 here.

Google Pixel 4a could finally launch on August 3

Google Pixel 4a could finally launch on August 3 after being delayed multiple times in the past few months. The delay in the announcement was also a result of the Coronavirus outbreak in different parts of the world which led to the cancellation of Google I/O 2020 event, where the Pixel 4a was expected to break cover. Nevertheless, according to fresh rumours, Google could be readying the Pixel 4a for an unveiling on August 3.

According to Jon Prosser who has been spot on with some of earlier leaks, the Pixel 4a will be launched on August 3. In a tweet, Prosser reveals that Google’s Pixel 4a launch is “100% happening on August 3”. There’s currently no word on whether or not the Pixel 4a will make it to India anytime soon. Google Pixel 4 didn’t launch in India due to the restrictions in the country on the commercial use of Soli radar and there has been a lot of speculation for the Pixel 4a in India as the successor to the Pixel 3a.

Google’s upcoming mid-range smartphone has previously been subject to numerous leaks and here’s everything we know about it.

Google Pixel 4a leaked specifications

Google Pixel 4a features a 5.81-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) resolution and uses an OLED panel. There’s is a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for the 8MP front-facing camera with an 84-degree field-of-view.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 618 GPU. This is paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB/128GB storage options to choose from. The 4a does have the company’s proprietary Titan M security chip but still misses out on the Pixel Neural Core. Also missing is the array of Soli radar chip and other sensors that debuted on the Pixel 4 last year.

This, hopefully, indicates that Google could bring the Pixel 4a to India as the presence of Soli chip earlier on the Pixel 4 didn’t allow it to be certified for commercial use according to Indian laws.

Pixel 4a has a single 12.2MP camera with support for both OIS and EIS, while the front-facing camera is reportedly the same as the Pixel 3a. The phone’s rear camera is capable of recording in 4K at 30fps, 1080p at 30/60/120fps and 720p at up to 240fps while the selfie camera can shoot Full HD videos at 30fps.

The phone comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and could come in two colours-- Just Black and Barely Blue. The 4a is pre-loaded with the new Google Assistant and other features like Now Playing. It also comes with an assurance of getting Android updates for the next three years.

The Pixel 4a is fitted with a 3,080mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging but skips out on wireless charging.

You can grab an Apple iPhone SE 2020 as low as Rs 37,399 on Flipkart

The Apple iPhone SE (2020) debuted in India a few months back at a starting price of Rs 42,500 for the 64GB variant. The new iPhone SE is Apple's affordable and compact offering that borrows some traits from the flagship series and some from the older generation iPhones.

If you've been waiting for a deal to grab the new iPhone SE for yourself, you might have just found one. Flipkart is selling the iPhone SE at a discount where you can buy it as low as Rs 37,399. As per the listing, the current price is Rs 40,999 after a discount of Rs 1501. On top of this discount, Flipkart is also offering Rs 3600 instant discount for HDFC Bank credit card and debit cards users on EMI option. In case you don't want to opt for a non-EMI option, you can still avail a Rs 1500 discount by using an HDFC debit card. The offer is valid on Flipkart only during July 24 to 28.

You can avail the HDFC Bank offers on 128GB and 256GB variants as well. The 128GB variant is available at Rs 45,999 and 256GB is available at Rs 55,999. After a discount of Rs 3600, the prices go as low as Rs 42,399 and Rs 52,399 respectively.

Is Apple iPhone SE (2020) at Rs 37,399 is a decent deal?

In terms of performance, iPhone SE (2020) is a power-packed smartphone at this price. It's an ideal fit for those who love a compact form factor without compromising with the performance. If you get into comparison with Android phones, there's a lot that the iPhone SE lacks but what it offers is rare, and a decent fit for iOS enthusiasts who were waiting for a compact and affordable iPhone.

It brings the mix of features like an HDR display, IP67 water-resistance and the, of course, the A13 Bionic processor. It loses the numbers game when it comes to the camera, and also the missing night mode might not sound pleasing to many. Only go for this camera if you do not demand a variety of lenses for smartphone photography.

Like we said in our review, the iPhone SE is a low-cost entry into the iOS ecosystem. You will get a small but good display, a smooth interface with no performance issues, a decent front and rear camera. What you may miss is a fast charging, long battery life, variety of camera lenses, high screen to body ratio.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 can go from 0 to 50 percent in 5 minutes

American chipmaker Qualcomm today unveiled the latest iteration of its fast charging technology - Quick Charge 5 - that comes with more than 100W charging that's also the fastest commercial charging solution on mobile devices. It is said to be 70% more power-efficient than the Quick Charge 4.

Quick Charge 5 is expected to appear in commercial devices in Q3 2020. For now, Quick Charge 5 is supported on Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and all the upcoming premium-tier Snapdragon mobile chipsets. It will be compatible with wired and wireless charging technologies.

At the launch, Xiaomi also announced its collaboration with Qualcomm to adopt the Quick Charge 5 technology in its future devices. “Quick Charge solutions are widely available in a variety of mobile devices. The latest generation of Quick Charge 5 not only provides superior charging capabilities but helps intelligently extend a device's battery life and reduce thermal output,” said Zhang Lei, VP, Mi Phone. Xiaomi had revealed last year that it was working on a 100W Super Charge Turbocharger, showing how it can top up a 4,000mAh battery from 0-100% in just 17 minutes. Recently, a leak showed a Xiaomi charger can top up a phone with 120W power.

What's new in Qualcomm Quick Charge 5?

The Quick Charge 5 technology claims to charge a 4000mAh battery up to 50% in 5 minutes and 100% in less than 15 minutes. Note that real-life results may differ as per the device design and configuration. Apart from promising fast charging speeds, the company says QC 5 uses Qualcomm Battery Save and a new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology to increase power efficiency and battery life on the supported device.

Qualcomm says that Quick Charge 5 is 70% more efficient than Quick Charge 4 and 10x power delivery rate (on a 4500mAh battery with a max thermal power up to 40-degree Celsius) compared to the first-gen Quick Charge tech. It also supports 2S batteries where two cell units in a single battery are used and, 20 Volts of power delivery as well.

To keep its super-fast charging tech secure, the company has ensured safety by incorporating a dozen of separate voltage, current and thermal protection. It includes USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V. Additionally, it is said to be 10-degree Celcius cooler than Quick Charge 4.

To increase power transfer efficiency, battery life and safety, Qualcomm has enabled Dual/Triple Charge technology, adaptive input voltage, INOV4 (Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage), Qualcomm Battery Saver and a new Smart Identification of Adapter feature on the Quick Charge 5.

Qualcomm's Dual Charge technology aims to keep the temperature low while charging by splitting the current into two streams, which also increases the charging speed. The INOV is Qualcomm's algorithm that is said to deliver optimum power transfer while maximising efficiency by keeping battery, chipset and connector's thermals at check.

Qualcomm's new power management integrated circuits (PMICs) make a difference

Qualcomm has also unveiled new premium tier power management integrated circuits (PMICs) - SMB1396 and SMB1398 - with the Quick Charge 5. For those unaware, a PMIC does exactly what its name suggests. In mobile devices, that run on a battery, the PMICs controls the flow of power. Since mobile phones have multiple internal voltages and use an external device to charge, a PMIC assures the right flow of current by providing voltage regulation, voltage protection and charging efficiency.

The new SMB1396 and SMB1398 PMICs are claimed to provide maximum efficiency of above 98%. The company has added support for 1SnP and 2SnP batteries, wired and wireless charging input, dynamic operations based on the power source. They also offer scalability to accommodate the highest power levels from the power source with support for more than 20V input voltage operation.

Compatibility

Quick Charge 5 supported accessories will be backwards compatible with all the previous generation Quick Charge versions except for the first. That includes QC 2.0, 3.0, 4, 4+ and existing smartphones powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. Despite the increase in power, the technology still maintains the same footprint as the 45W solution. Which means customers won't need to buy a separate accessory to charge a compatible device. It is optimized to support both USB-PD and Type-C technologies as well. Which makes it compatible with most current and upcoming mobile devices.
