China wont accept Trumps smash and grab against TikTok, as per state-owned newspaper

After getting banned in India, TikTok is now on the verge of losing its US market. President Donald Trump has warned of banning the short video app in the US on September 15 if it doesn't sell the US business to an American company. Microsoft also showed interest in acquiring TikTok's operation and CEO Satya Nadela is in the conversation for the deal. Under the proposed agreement, Microsoft said it would take over TikTok's operations in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The US President later said that he made a demand for a "substantial portion" of the purchase price to be paid to the US treasury. Now ByteDance is under immense pressure, mainly because it has recently lost a market it was hugely invested in (India), and now it's another huge market at stake due to national security concerns.

China won't accept the "theft" of TikTok

Bytedance hasn't commented on this yet. But China Daily, a state-run newspaper today published an editorial that reads, "China will by no means accept the theft of a Chinese technology company, and it has plenty of ways to respond if the administration carries out its planned smash and grab."

Another Chinese government-backed newspaper, Global Times called the sale a "daylight robbery."

The US government has a clear case against Huawei over IP theft and other issues, but there's no substantial evidence against TikTok as of now. For taking a cut in the TikTok-Microsoft deal, the Trump government has yet to explain why the treasury should be given a cut. TikTok's future in the US market is still blurry; it all depends on the resolution that ByteDance comes up with if it needs to survive in the US market. Also, it would be interesting to see how the Chinese government retaliates to the move.

iQOO 5 confirmed to launch on August 17 with 120W fast charging

iQOO 5 with 120W fast charging is confirmed to launch on August 17, the company has revealed. With this, the iQOO 5 could be the first phone to come with 120W fast charging out-of-the-box after companies like Oppo and Realme unveiled their fast-charging solutions last month.

iQOO took to Weibo to post a teaser of the upcoming iQOO 5 that is slated to be unveiled on August 17 at 2:30 PM CST (12 PM IST) in China. Given that the iQOO 3 did make it to India, we expect the company to bring the iQOO 5 to India in the coming months.

The teaser image posted by iQOO reveals that the 120W fast charging solution will be able to fully recharge the 4,000mAh battery on the iQOO 5 in 15 minutes tops. In contrast, Oppo and Realme’s 125W fast charging solution can fully recharge a 4,000mAh battery in 20 minutes, which is tad a bit slower than what iQOO claims.

iQOO’s fast charging solution uses two charge pumps to convert the adapter output to 5V 12A wattage, unlike Oppo’s solution that makes use of three charge pumps.

iQOO 5 leaked specifications

Some alleged renders of the iQOO 5 made it to the Internet which shows a phone with curved edges and a glossy finish on the back. The phone seems to have a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera and has a vertical camera setup on the back.

The iQOO 5 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 or Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset with UFS 3.1 storage and 120Hz refresh rate AMOLED display. There could be a quad-camera setup on the back but it is something that we’ll hear about closer to the launch.

The iQOO 5 is scheduled to launch on August 17 and we’ll know more about the phone at the time.
