Disney+ Hotstar starts streaming in 4K HDR in India

If you have been waiting with bated breath for Disney+ Hotstar to stream content in 4K then you are in luck. The service has started streaming in 4K and HDR. As of writing this story, only the film Togo is streaming in 4K and HDR. It is streaming in HDR 10 and not Dolby Vision. It also comes with 5.1 surround sound and not Dolby Atmos. We reached out to Disney+ Hotstar for a comment on the upgraded streaming quality, but as of now, they have nothing to share with us on the subject.

Disney+ Hotstar starts streaming in 4K HDR in India

To put things into perspective, services like Amazon Prime Video has been streaming in HDR 10 for quite some time now and Netflix has been streaming in Dolby Vision along with support for Dolby Atmos. Below is an image clicked on an LG B9 OLED which supports 4K and HDR. The native app on the TV hasn’t been updated yet to support 4K and HDR and the image you see has been streamlined using a 4K Fire TV Stick.

Disney+ Hotstar is finally streaming in 4K and HDR

Disney+ Hotstar 4K streaming bitrate details.

From the above image, it is clear that Togo is available in 4K and HDR with 5.1 surround sound. As per the stats, it was playing back in 3840x2160 @ 24fps. One thing that we noticed was that the 4K streaming only picked up in quality when connected to the 5GHz band of the router. When connected to the 2.4GHz band, the streaming capped at 1080p. If the update is out for the Fire TV stick, it should be out for Android TVs and Android Streaming boxes as well.

Better late than never, we finally have 4K and HDR streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. I guess we will have to wait for some time before we get to see a larger catalogue of shows and movies support the format. Another thing we’d like to know is the data consumption when streaming in 4K and HDR. if you have the answers to these questions, let us know in the comments.

Xiaomi MI TV Stick launched in India at Rs 2,799, will go on sale August 7

Xiaomi had recently confirmed that their streaming device, the Mi TV Stick would launch in India on August 5, and today is the day! The company has given us the pricing and availability of the device. The Mi TV stick is a streaming device which runs on the Android TV platform and can output in 1080p. It competes with the Fire TV stick and was launched in the European market last month. You can check out our spec comparison between the Fire TV Stick and the Mi TV Stick here. Below, let’s dive into the details of the Mi TV Stick.

Eshwar Nilakantan, Lead Business – MiTV, Xiaomi India, said, “At Xiaomi, we are focused on bringing entertainment into the comfort of your living room by providing solutions that not only provide access to content but also make streaming a lot more convenient on non-smart TV sets. With the launch of Mi TV Stick, we are focused on offering the Smart TV experience to consumers who are constantly looking for ways to consume OTT content.”

Mi TV Stick Pricing and availability

Xiaomi has announced that the Mi TV Stick will be priced at Rs 2,799. It will be available starting August 7 12 noon in India on mi.com, Flipkart, Mi Home stores and Xiaomi’s offline retail partners. Just to put things into perspective, the Fire TV Stick (1080p variant) is priced at Rs 3,999. This gives the Mi TV Stick a significant price advantage.

Mi TV Stick specifications and features

Looking at the specifications of the Mi TV Stick, it is quite lightweight, weighing a mere 28.5 grams. It connects via HDMI to your TV or projector hand has a maximum output of 1080p. Unlike the Fire TV Stick which comes with an HDMI extender in the box for easy connectivity, the Mi TV Stick does not. So how it hampers the convenience of the HDMI ports next to it is yet to be seen.

The Mi TV Stick runs on the Android TV platform, just like the Mi Box 4K (review). Thanks to the Android TV platform, you get access to the Google Play Store along with streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and many more. Under the hood, the device is powered by a quad-core Cortex-A53 processor coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage.

It also supports both DTS and Dolby audio. The Bluetooth remote comes with dedicated Netflix and Prime Video buttons and the Google Assistant button allows you to control it simply by giving voice commands. The remote control for the Mi TV Stick is identical to the one found on the Mi Box 4K.

If you are looking to get on the 4K bandwagon and are looking for a streaming stick, then you can check out our comparison between the Mi Box 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K here.

Everything we know about iPhone 12 so far

The iPhone is one of the most anticipated devices each year and this year is no different. We are already seeing many leaks about the iPhone 12 and a lot of new information is cropping up from the iOS 14 beta. So here is everything we know about the iPhone 12:

iPhone 12 Launch Date:

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there have been production delays which will result in the iPhone 12 launch being pushed back to October. Apple CFO, Luca Maestri, confirmed this during the company’s quarterly earnings call,” As you know, last year we started selling iPhones in late September. This year, we project supply to be available a few weeks later.” We might also see a staggered launch with 2 devices launching early in October and the other 2 in November.

iPhone 12 Design & Size:

According to reports, we will see a brand new boxy design for the iPhone this year, just like the iPad Pro. This means that the iPhone 12 will not have curved edges and will have thinner bezels and a smaller notch too. As per the reports, the iPhone 12 will continue to have a dual rear camera set up with the Pro devices featuring a brand new LidAR sensor like the iPad Pro 2020.

Reports also suggest that Apple will launch with the iPhone in 3 different sizes, a small 5.4 inch and a 6.1 inch iPhone 12 along with a 6.1 inch and a larger 6.7 inch iPhone 12 Pro.

iPhone 12 Pricing:

Based on Apple’s history of pricing the iPhone, the iPhone 12 Pro could start at $999, but we might see the iPhone 12 starting at a cheaper $649. This comes after Apple launched the iPhone 11 at $50 cheaper than its predecessor, iPhone XR.

iPhone 12 Colour options:

The iPhone usually launches in 3 different colours: black, white and a third surprise colour. Last year, it was the Midnight Green which was very popular amongst consumers. This year we might see a ‘Phantom Blue’ colour option.

iPhone 12 Specs:

Apple’s in-house chipsets are some of the most powerful processors in the mobile industry and this year Apple is expected to launch the iPhone with its brand new A14 Bionic chip. This new chipset along with the rumoured LidAR sensor will see Apple delve deeper into Augmented Reality.

The Cupertino giant usually doesn’t announce the RAM in its devices but it is rumoured that this year’s iPhone 12 Pro devices will feature a 6GB RAM, whilst the iPhone 12 devices will feature 4GB RAM.

With many companies including OnePlus and Samsung sporting high refresh rate displays in their flagship devices, it is expected that the new iPhones will feature a ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate display like the iPad Pro. But there have also been some contradictory reports suggesting that this spec has not been finalized yet and that the devices will ship with a traditional 60Hz display. We will know more closer to the launch date.

Apple is also widely expected to launch its first 5G iPhone this year with its own 5G antenna and modems after it acquired Intel’s 5G modem business for $1 Billion. All 4 iPhone 12 devices are expected to support 5G.

This will probably also be the first year when the cheaper iPhones will have OLED displays instead of LCD panels like the iPhone XR and iPhone 11.

iPhone 12 Accessories:

Apple was the first company to ditch the headphone jack and this year it might be the first to ditch the charging adapter and EarPods which normally ship with the device in the retail box. If true, this will be a huge change in consumer tech.
