Xiaomi Redmi G gaming laptop officially launches on August 14

The Xiaomi Redmi G gaming laptop is set to debut on August 14, the company has confirmed. The Redmi G will mark the brand’s foray into the gaming laptop category under the Redmi brand. Xiaomi already has a couple of notebooks under its Mi Notebook and RedmiBook series and gaming laptops under the Mi Gaming series. Notably, the company did release the Mi NoteBook 14 series in India just a few months ago.

With the Redmi G, we expect Xiaomi to unveil a gaming laptop that’s also affordable, considering that’s what the Redmi brand is known for. According to the invite shared, Redmi G is scheduled to launch in China on August 14 at 2 PM (11:30 AM IST) which is when we will know the exact specifications, features and pricing of the Redmi G.

Xiaomi Redmi G gaming laptop officially launches on August 14

Going by the teaser image of the Redmi G, it features thin bezels on three sides and it seems like the camera has been repositioned to the bottom bezel, below the Redmi G logo. The laptop doesn’t look thin and has wide vents for better heat dissipation alongside a USB Type-A port and 3.5 mm headphone jack. It also looks likely to come with a matte finish and is expected to feature a 15.6-inch display.

While we don’t have any information on the hardware inside, the Redmi G could be priced aggressively with powerful internals. For instance, the Mi Gaming laptop 2019 can be configured with upto 16GB DDR4 RAM and upto NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics. It features a 144Hz high refresh rate along with full-sized RGB backlit keyboard and upto 1TB SSD storage.

The Mi Gaming Laptop 2019 starts at CNY 6,499 which roughly translates to around Rs 70,000 by direct conversion, but we expect Xiaomi to aim for an aggressive price as that would go along with the nature of the Redmi brand. More details about the Redmi G will be revealed on August 14.

The pre-orders for Surface Duo are already underway and anyone in the US can pre-book the company’s first foldable phone at a price of $1,399. Microsoft had previously revealed the design along with some key specifications of the Surface Duo and today, in its Surface IT Pro Blog, it announced the availability of the phone along with a sneak peek at the final product.

The Surface Duo comes with two 5.6-inch displays separated by a hinge design that enables it to be used in different modes. There’s currently no word whether Microsoft is planning to bring the Surface Duo to India anytime soon. Nevertheless, by direct conversion, the price of Microsoft’s foldable phone is around Rs 1,05,000 which puts it in the ballpark of other foldable phones like Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr.

Microsoft Surface Duo specifications

The display is capable of reproducing 100% sRGB and DCI-P3 colour gamut and is topped with a layer of Gorilla Glass for added protection. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset from last year and is paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB/256GB UFS 3.0 storage options to choose from. The Surface Duo runs on Android 10 and comes pre-loaded with Microsoft 365 suite of Android apps. It also supports Surface Pen but it doesn’t come bundled.

The Surface Duo comes with an 11MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture with PDAF and EIS support and doubles up as both the rear and front camera system. It can record in 4K UHD at upto 60FPS along with features like 7x super zoom, HDR support and more.

Apple to launch a cheaper, 4G-Only iPhone 12 in Early 2021

If rumours are right, the iPhone 12 lineup is going to be very expansive and exciting. The next-generation iPhone is rumoured to have a brand new design, thinner bezels and 5G support. However, a new report suggests that a cheaper iPhone 12 will arrive in early 2021 without 5G support. This 4G-only model of the iPhone 12 is expected to cost around $800 (Rs 60,000 approx. directly converted) and seems to be in line with Apple appealing to a larger demographic with affordable phones like the iPhone SE in addition to the two tiers of iPhones - the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.

Apple to launch a cheaper, 4G-Only iPhone 12 in Early 2021

Apple had already confirmed that iPhone 12 production is falling behind when Apple CFO, Luca Maestri, spoke during the company’s quarterly earnings call. In it, he said, “As you know, last year we started selling iPhones in late September. This year, we project supply to be available a few weeks later.” We also expect the Cupertino based tech giant to release the iPhone 12 in a staggered launch. Both the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and 12 Pro devices are reported to launch in the first wave, in October, and the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro will release later, possibly in November. This timeline fits perfectly with the cheaper 4G-Only iPhone 12 releasing in early 2021.

In other iPhone news, the high spec iPhone 12 Pro devices will most probably not have a high refresh rate display as expected. This comes after engineers reportedly had concerns for the battery life. We can expect iPhone 2021 to feature ‘Pro Motion’ displays with LTPO panels as we saw in the Apple Watch. The cheaper iPhone 12 is also leaked to feature an OLED display instead of an LCD panel as seen in previous years.

The iPhone 12 lineup will have many new changes. Click here to read up on everything that we know, so far.

TikTok reportedly tracked MAC addresses of Android phones for 15 months: Report

TikTok for Android phones has been found to track user’s MAC (Media Access Control) addresses for over 15 months before ending the practice back on November 18, last year. The Wall Street Journal’s investigative report sheds some light as to how this was possible as it violates several Play Store policies put in place by Google going back to 2015 when Google restricted third-party apps to collect a phone’s Mac address for pushing advertisements.

However, a familiar loophole allowed many apps to access and record Mac addresses until a formal bug report was submitted to Google last June by Joel Reardon, co-founder of AppCensus. He has indicated that this flaw is widely known and allows “long-term” tracking of user’s behaviour and target ads based on the advertising ID.

What all user data did TikTok collect?

In its report, the WSJ highlights that the TikTok Android app collected MAC addresses and other device data along with a 32-digit advertising ID which lets advertisers monitor user’s behaviour online in order to serve them ad recommendations.

The app reportedly binds the phone’s Mac address with advertising ID and sends it to ByteDance under an extra layer of encryption. Several security experts have hinted that it’s a total violation of Google’s privacy policy as it gives TikTok the ability to connect an old advertising ID to a new one in case the user resets it.

However, the Mac addresses can’t be modified, giving TikTok a way to use a technique called ID bridging and match advertising identifiers with MAC addresses. While ID bridging is mostly used by games, it doesn’t require the collection of MAC addresses which is something TikTok was doing. What’s even more surprising that the app sends all this data to Bytedance but under an extra layer of security so that it cannot be discovered by Google.

In a statement to the WSJ, TikTok ensured that the “current version” of the app does not collect MAC addresses.  “TikTok is committed to protecting the privacy and safety of the TikTok community. Like our peers, we constantly update our app to keep up with evolving security challenges,” it added.

This privacy violation by TikTok comes at a time when the company is facing immense pressure from the US government and an impending ban if the company isn’t able to sell its US operations to a company based in the United States by September 20. Microsoft has been rumoured to be the frontrunner in acquiring TikTok in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and according to a recent report, Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft is wary of the deal calling TikTok a “poison chalice”.

In India, TikTok is already facing a blanket ban that was implemented on June 29 along with 58 other apps that were found to be engaged in “activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order.” Following the order, TikTok was de-listed from the Play Store and Apple App Store. As per the latest report, TikTok in India is looking to hold off around 2,000 of its employees in India as discussions on its sale is underway.
